A little history about the Jaguar 420 and what it's like to drive. Not comprehensive, by any means. Please feel free to add your experiences in the comments. Would love to hear what other owners say.

I just found one of these in my friend’s yard with him. It’s his mom’s. Been sitting there for ever. Cracked paint and dusty interior. We wanna restore it this summer. I’m excited, I love Jags.

🙂 A beautiful looking classic car. A Jaguar was at that time, and a long time afterward, just below the level of a Rolls_Royce or Bentley. But made in much greater numbers. So in my country, you still see alot of them on the roads....

Very underrated model, technically way ahead of the more popular mark 2. Synchro gearbox, IRS and alternator electrics. Mine was white with red interior, chrome wires and manual o/d. Delightful on the open highway, around 24 mpg cruising at 75-80mph.

It's a shame that Jaguar increased the rear roof height on the S-Type and 420, It looks awful when viewed from the rear IMO, The MK2 roof line is perfect.

Yes Kaspar I also wish I had kept mine. William Lyons himself said that the original XJ6 series 1 was the best car he had ever made. By the time they got to the series 3 with the Pininfarina design changes I always thought it lost something. However the X300 series under Geoff Lawsons team in the 90's brought back more of the series 2 design look, and is a much better and dependable car for it's time. I consider the X300 the best and most beautiful Jaguar saloon ever made. Apart from the Mark 2. But the X300 is a more modern car and is comparable to the comfort of, and if not more comfortable than most modern so called big brand name cheap luxury cars. We pay through the nose today for big brand names that do not provide the true luxury quality car that I grew up with. Many are just cheap cars with lots of gadgets and performance. The interesting thing about performance, is that I for one can not use or enjoy it, because of the speed restrictions on our roads, and if I could, I no longer have the continuing practicing skills needed to drive and control a fast car today.

Great to watch your video of the 420. Definitely a lovely car and I appreciated your comments on checking the dash pots! I also have a 420 and find the suspension pretty soft.. I am based on the UK and chair of the JDC register for this car. If you ever come to the UK let me know and we can try to meet up and you can meet other owners. Thanks again for a lovely video.

@@Martin_in_Cheltenham Yes the suspension was soft but I wonder what you are relating it to. Jaguar have always leaned towards the waft in the ride. That is one reason I actually liked Jaguars. I think the interesting thing is, that now we have strict speed restrictions on our roads, which were not there in the prime of the older Jaguar days. The only way people feel that they are going fast is with a lot of noise, stiff sports suspension and hard ride, giving them a tough sports feel. You know, its all set up for speed even though you can't use it. I think the modern Jags have gone that way. One of my jags is an X Type and the ride in that is nothing to write home about. Your 420 is a glorious ride compared to my X Type. The mechanics are much better with the straight 6 engine versus the modern V8 and V6 Jaguars. The unfortunate thing today, is that the car makers make what people, who don't know what they need but what they want, and thus we are getting too much of the same and no real lead from the makers like we got from Jaguar. They were something special. Show me a car today that is as special as your car. The modern car in the future will be a pile of broken electronic parts, that satisfied fashion more than good style, practical mechanics and uniqueness. The modern car is just over engineered for gadgets and fashion. They have forgotten the other qualities that one can enjoy in a car. But then how many young people have had the experience of driving in a car like yours.

I enjoyed this video and your comments. My wife and I bought a 420 in the Spring 2021. Previous owner and his wife were second owners but for 50 years. My dad had an EType when I was a boy and the 420 reminds me of that Jag in so many ways. In many ways I prefer the 420 to the EType.

Nice to here of other people's experience with these cars. The E-type is so iconic and beautiful, but last time I test drove one, I felt it was smaller than I remember, and it wouldn't be as functional for me to use regularly. I love being able to take friends out for the day!

Thanks for the video! My 420 gets driven daily also, including some huge roadtrips across Australia. I know of five or six other 420s here. I try very hard to show people on my channel how maintenance on these can be easy. Please consider getting a 123tune distributor and an updated anti roll bar! Two of the best improvements I've made for daily driving. The distributor especially made a huge difference to power and economy once dialled in. I'm making the most of high octane gas now. Drive it hard maintain it harder is exactly the approach I've taken so far. It gets better every day. Do upload more videos if you can, there aren't many of us on KZfaq!

The 3.8S type is my favorite body style with the nod to the 4.2 in the 420. Yes I appreciate these cars and own a 1965 Mark X.

Loved your Bentley T video. This too is a gem. The love you two have of your gorgeous old cars is inspiring and contagious. I look for to seeing more posts… perhaps another road trip. I’m sure the 420 is capable of more than day jaunts. Jaguar built them for a good relaxed road trip. We used to have a 3.8 series1 e-type that was often taken on long holiday jaunts. So many magic memories. These days I drive a varied range of lovely old things, from a 1956 Citroen 2CV AZ (also taken on long adventures), an early Citroen CX with gorgeous blue corduroy seats a spaceship dashboard and that velvet soft suspension. Then there’s the Saab 9000 CSE, what a gem. But perhaps the favorite is a much loved and well worn VW Porsche 914. The ultimate road-trip car for two. Hard to believe it has so much storage space. It puts a huge smile on our faces when we take her out for an adventure

Lovely car , the 420 Is very underrated, it definitely drives a lot better than a mk2 , my uncle had one of these in the late 60"s and 70's , I brought one in 2001 had it 5 years , both were dark blue like yours , I highly recommend..one ...if you can find a good one, thanks for showing

Glad you could experience it. We had a MK2 previous to this car and while I loved the styling of it, the 420 definitely works better for us as a daily driver.

This was the first car I bought back in the 70's. It was a lovely car but I sold it for an XJ6 series 1 a few years later. The XJ6 was a big improvement on the 420. The transmission was smoother, quieter and swifter. However the 420 was more regal and was easier to climb in and out of than the XJ6 because it was a totally different car. You mention Bentley, and back in the 60's when I was a kid I fell in love with Jaguars as I saw them as a more practical sportier car, but with a lot of the classy Rolls and Bentley decor etc. And of cause much cheaper. I did at one time consider a Bentley Arnage " Green Label" model with the 4.4 BMW engine. The Arnage still stands as one of the best interiors and dashes I have ever seen.

The XJ6 is a lovely car. I owned a series 1 at one time, when I was too young (and broke) to know how to take care of it, and after my first big repair need I ended up selling it for next to nothing to the mechanic. Was an excellent car.

As the owner of its predecessor, the S Type, for 58 years I can agree with your assessment. the 420 has bigger front brakes, the Variomatic steering, factory AC which are pluses but otherwise much the same driving experience but mine is a manual with overdrive car, not automatic.

I currently owns a 1967 jaguar 420 and I’m looking for someone to purchase it for two things. I know that it needs would be to have the carburetors adjusted and for it to be painted the interior has been completed wood restored. I am the third owner of the vehicle and I had it for approximately 20 years.

I like the video, and I am a definite fan of the 420. However I have a lot of experience with this era of Jaguar having had a MK 10. The 420 was smaller but not really more sporty in the way it drove (basically, they had the same components, same rear suspension same engine). "Not particularly exhilarating to drive" (MK10 ) boy are you wrong about that. Also this is by no means the first concept of a sport sedan , like this .

@@KasparArnault Nice to hear back from you . the truth is " size isn't everything" and all Jaguars of that era especially the larger engine more powerful ones were at heart Spot cars. Have you ever driven a MK 10? I was in a 420 , when I was living in Portugal. Put a manual transmission on these cars and they're all sports cars.

A very nice example Kasper, but the one thing that I find very ugly is the steering wheel! Each to there own and all that, but stock is always best, imo.

In general I agree. We did keep the original wheel which can be changed back at any time, but I do like the feel of this wheel and I quite like its looks.

I’m surprised that you say the ride is rigid. Jaguars of this era were known for their exceptional ride quality, which was often said to be as good as if not better than considerably more expensive cars. Maybe the new shock absorbers are too stiff?

Relatively speaking I would agree. Much better than a MK2, but still far below modern cars, and unfortunately my wife always complains about the bumpiness, compared to our Bentley of same vintage. And we have some bad roads here, which put it to the test. In a place like California where the roads are good you would not notice.

My father had a 420G in British Racing Green, I was 8yrs old and that car sparked a love affair that still burns like a furnace fire today. Sadly, I fear and see the demise of Jaguar Cars within five years as they have now ceased production of ALL internal combistion engines and models to go all woke electric vehicles only.

I can't decide if I'd like to have one of these or a 420g. This was meant to be the sports 4 door and it's a lot narrower but the 420g was top of the range and after seeing the 420gs front end the front of the 420 doesn't look right sometimes

Ah, they are actually very different in character and the way they drive, and really a matter of personal preference. But I would definitely drive BOTH to see how it feels for you, and you will know right away.

Get the low oil pressure checked out, It should be a minimum of 40psi at 3000rpm hot.

Ah, yes, this gauge has been notoriously inaccurate. Had a new sender unit put in but I think it is the gauge itself. The oil pressure is good (engine was completely rebuilt a couple of years ago).
