Of course that glass will crack if you put pressure on it this way. You should have take a knife and remove the rubber seal of the window first (the sides of it). That will free up the glass and you can take windshield away by hand. Then you just clean up rest of the rubber (sealer) that was below the window. I removed like that rear window, no damage.
