I've been watching a ton of painting videos, and this series stands out as one of the most comprehensive. So many videos gloss over the little things like dry times, sandpaper grits, mix ratios for primer, outside temperatures, etc. I'm finding out that when it comes to things like paint, talking a lot about every little process is important. I'm just trying to repair the clearcoat on my car, but it's good to see what a super high level paint process looks like.

Thanks Live A proper paint job is incredibly tedious and unforgiving. Studying up on all the little details will help you be more successful. Good Luck!

Thats a good question Phil=) actually I am a cabinet maker by trade Sanding and finishing would be my specialty but classic cars my passion/hobby I learned how to work on them since I was a boy..my dad was a car genius and I got my start in bodywork from my Uncle Den Im OCD tripple positive and working on cars is excellent therapy ..a bit over obsessed with perfection sometimes=)

I appreciate the technical information; you are giving a much clearer description of the steps and most importantly the time needed to do the job properly. BTW greeting from Downunder.

Downunder! Awesome=)) Never been to Australia but always wanted too Seems to have quite a large Porsche following down there..just purchased a bendix style fuel pump from someone in Australia... Beautiful workmanship too Im wondering do you have a project you are working on? Cheers!

There is a large Porsche following in Australia. Our cars are RHD, and were not imported in large numbers; and compared to the cost in the US and Europe, they are very expensive. Lots of people are now importing LHD cars from the US, although the exchange rate still makes it a costly exercise. I have recently become interested in owning an air-cooled 911 or 912, preferably the latter, although the 912 is very rare in Australia, so I have been looking at getting one in the US. That process is fraught with problems because it is very difficult to choose the right car at a distance, and I don't know anyone on the ground in the US to keep an eye open for the right car, or do basic investigation. I have had many classic cars (not Porsche) and worked on them to various degrees; although I have never done major body work / rust repair, or painted a car myself. Just looking at the 911 / 912s for sale in the US, it seems that paint and body work will be required; so I am educating myself about those processes, which is where your incredibly helpful videos come in. I am very wary of getting into something that is beyond me, so I need to fully understand what is involved to make a rational assessment of whether I could realistically do it.

Hi Brett I see your situation on acquiring a good candidate and doing the restoration. Definitely I think you can do everything yourself..I'm very confident..getting the right car is always the tough part Im going to be uploading some video soon on Gas Tank replacement and thinking of talking about how to find a good restoration candidate based on a hands on tear downed what to look for.. might be of some help from not able to see before purchasing investment Good Luck with car search! 912 is an awesome car!!

Hi Mike, I have been re-watching all of your videos as of late. I am getting close to working on the inside of the car and on the bottom. For the inside if your 911 did you only use POR-15? Or did you put something else on top of it? Also, what treatment did you do for your dash? Did you POR-15 the dash and then apply a paint on top of it? I want to get the satin black look on my dash. Thanks for your help. Great video as usual. Also, a cool video would be a tour of your shop and booth. As you are very organized it will help give the rest of us ideas on how to work in a space similar to yours. Happy New Year!

Hello Rodney Happy New Year Sounds like you are diving in! The interior was POR15 after media blasting to bare metal first. If you don't go down to bare metal I would recommend priming and painting. The dashboard was epoxy primer on bare metal and then sanded to 600 grit. I made a video on this process but after the car was clear coated I had to re-shoot the dash again. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9F4dZynzNqviZs.html Clear coat overspray had made its way into the cab and ruined the finish so a re-scuff and re-spray was necessary. The only difference from the video version is I applied three finish coats as apposed to only two and the end finish was even more desirable. The product was by PPG called hot rod black and comes as a kit. It is very similar to spraying out epoxy as both are 2K products. I like your idea on doing a video of the shop and car areas. Will put it on the videos to do list! Good Luck

Hi Mike, Love the way you go about things systematically. I am researching my project and it is invaluable help. Anyway, I live in Sweden and the winters here are pretty unforgiving. I wonder at which point in your "bodywork scheme" I could put the car away for the winter period ? Any special precautions you recommend ?

@@MikesRestorations I haven't done anything yet. I am trying to find a reasonable level of ambition and see if I have to cut any corners. I need to have a plan before I get started because leaving metal unprotected over winter here is not an option. Worst case I need to find a warm garage/shop.

@@remcotissink I think a good starting place for winter months might be to begin the disassembly process. Exterior trim, Trunk, Interior, Engine & gearbox. Suspension etc.. Building storage shelving and organizing organize parts. Stripping paint and degreasing parts could be done when things warm up. If its possible to put a space heater where you are working this might give you some boost when the spring time comes

Hello Tom Over the years the channel has evolved from its earlier beginnings. I think starting on video 22 of the series I became more present in the videos. I had many requests for exactly what you are mentioning. I do tripod work now with the narration and complete DIY process rather than video narration alone. The more modern videos of the series have improved to some degree over the years but am always striving to do a better job going forward. Thank you so much for your interest! and please bare with those early videos=)

Mike’s Restorations Mike ok. Great. Video are still great, but sounds like they get even better. I still can’t get over how many layers and how long it takes for the body restoration. 😅
