Losing a dad too soon in life is beyond difficult to deal with. Anthony Nicolo bonded with his from an early age, spending significant shared time around the Renault 8 in the family garage, teaching, learning. Building on these experiences and using what other mentors had passed on to him, Anthony would go on to build his late father’s Renault into a rally-inspired hot rod that honors their shared passion for these souped-up French classics.

"I will always remember that smell and that sound" So many of us love Petrolicious because we can relate with the sentiment. I'm 42 now but still remember clearly the smell and sound of my dad's '67 GTO when he would run me around at 5yrs old. For car aficionados, these sense memories always stick with us and Petrolicious once again beautifully transcribes this story that could easily be any one of us. And BTW, that has to be one of the most striking Renault 8's I've ever seen. Very cool.

Yes I remember very well the smell of my dad's 68 Rambler when he used to gather us kids up and would just run the car in the garage. I would start feeling sleepy and a little euphoric even. My dad would get so emotional he'd start tearing up and then shut off the engine. Good times, good times.

A very underrated car amongst petrolheads, we should definitely recognise the 8 Gordini more!

Aaron Hussain absolutely! He's making it sound like most people are even familiar with a Gordini. In America they're practically obsolete. The only reason I've heard of it is because I was lucky enough to see an early 50's Gordini Type 24 at a concourse in Europe (and oh my! What a strikingly gorgeous automobile!)

Why, exactly? What did this car ever accomplish, besides being a "sporty" version of the mediocre Renault 8?

You know, I really enjoy that every so often, Petrolicious will introduce us to a non-American, non-English speaking Petrolhead, and allow them to tell us their story and share with us their car, and allows them to do it in their native tongue. Good on ya, chaps.

My father has told me that he had a Renault R8 (I wasn't born yet at that time), actually I never saw it. He told me he put a R10 gearbox to the car. In this days you can't find one in my country. I would like to have one of these vintage cars. Great video

I had one, came with a defective 5 speed which I replaced with a standard 4 speed due to lack of money. The 1300cc engine with dual double throat carbs gave it enough oomph to cope with much bigger engined cars of the same era. Great car!

Oh my god, the memories ! A friend of mine and my older bro, was the first one to own a car of us all friends" Yes, a school bus yellow R8. Roll painted with a huge flat black stripe, center painted front to back, black wheels, yellow Marchal fog lamps and to top it all, a Stebro exhaust ( brappps, brappps). Yep, an obviously fake Gordini. But man, it looked so cool. One Friday hot summer night, we, 4 young turks, go, you know, cruising down the hot spots downtown. Red light, a guy comes up beside us. Claude revs the poor thing as a joke. Light turns green, the bloody idiot goes as hell in his Acid Green 'Cuda 440 ! We laugh our heart out, even so when we see a cop pulling the guy over... and us. Cop comes to us: "ya guys were drag racing" ! "Aaaah, sir, this car has, kinda 40, maybe 45hp. We're 4 guys weighing, what, 165 lbs each. You're kidding, right ? " Blank faced cop goes "ok, smart asses, go away. But I'm watching you idiots" And then proceeds to give a ticket to the 'Cuda moron. That was some 45 odd years ago. When we all meet, we can't go without remembering that evening and still laugh it out loud ! Wives... not so much. Oh well. Gender kind o' thing I guess...

I was born in in communist Romania, under Ceausescu regime. My father had a Dacia 1100 , the romanian version 1/1 of Renault 8. He took me home from nursery in that car, an I grew in it. Rear engine , rwd , the smell...the sound of that 1,1 engine, was my lullaby trough my childhood. Great car presented here, very powerful story.

I enjoyed this episode because I owned a Renault 8 for several years in the late 1960s. It started my love affair with small "hot" sedans and hatchbacks. I now own a 2006 MINI Cooper JCW -- the last model with a supercharger. (The later models use a turbocharger). Yes, it is 12 years old but it receives excellent care by a MINI shop that specializes in 2002-2006 MINIs.

R8s are fantastic cars I had a £50 banger I fitted a R12ts engine straight in and ran it for a few years and loved every minute of driving it enthusiastically every where I was 18 at the time there was an endless stream of 8s and 16s in those days and I regret not keeping them cos they are very rare nowadays 36 years later hindsight is a wonderful thing I just never had any

My one and only 'new' car purchase.. guess ? Yes, I was one of a few who purchased a new Renault R5. Dark blue, grey cloth seats, throw back 'rag' roof.. Was wonderful driving on Rt1 Big Sur,night time with top fully back . Immediately removed the catalytic pipe piece in place of a straight thru..lastly placed on a nice little small diameter race wheel. I know that purchase was strongly inspired by years of lusting after racy R8's and Gordini's .

I don't know whether it was mentioned that Renault had their own racing series for the R 8 Gordini from 1965 to 1970. And how many talents have been sorced by that series like jean pierre beltoise and others. So the historic background is more than just a pimped up Renault 8 or Dacia 1100 like some people write. It is not a rally car at first sight but a racing series car for driving constantly fast at e.g. Paul Ricard , Spa Francorchamps and so on .

What a great story. Sadly, in the US, Renault had a big problem with road salt, and most Renaults rusted away quickly. They eventually left the US market. The Renault 5 was their last model, although we also got the 12 and 16. The new Megane RS has a setting to simulate the exhaust sound of an R8, which is a nice touch.
