After years of obscurity in the mid-size muscle car market, Ford finally got serious and introduced the 2-door 1968 Torino GT. When equipped with the 390 cubic-inch V8 or the Cobra Jet 428 cubic-inch V8, the Torino was now a serious threat to its competition. The 1968 Torino GT allowed Ford to be a sales leader in the mid-size muscle car segment.

Blame the EPA. For every powertrain combination (including manual transmission) it needs to be tested. Not cheap and it also takes time. Add in parts and devopment cost of offering more options with the complexity of modern engines, and sadly, options are a thing of the past.

My late brother, a Ford mechanic, had two of the fastbacks with the 390 plus his own engine performance mods. He was fond of saying it would pass everything on the road but the gas station. The first model was stolen the day after leaving the body shop (Hmmmm) and was recovered 5 years later after winning its bracket at a local drag strip. Thanks for the memories. Narragansett Bay.

I wish I still had my '68 Torino GT fastback. 390 cid, 4 speed. Maroon with gold stripes, and a white interior. I had too much fun with it, and the judge sent a letter to the state suggesting, they never let me register it again....LOL. He also gave me the option of military service, or the crossbar hotel. I sold the car, and joined the Army.

When I was a kid my dad had a 72 torino with a 390 4 speed. I can't say anything about performance as it was gone before I was old enough to drive, but I still remember how pretty it was. I also remember how scary/fun it was to be thrown around on dirt roads. Dad liked to DRIVE and nobody used belts in those days.☺

In '74, when I was 20, I traded my handmedown '66 Valiant on a '69 Torino GT. Think I paid $1000 for it. It had a 390 and a Holly 750 4bbl. I took it to Midas and had it converted from a single exhaust to dual Cherry Bomb glass packs To this day, it still one of my favorite cars I've ever owned.

I had a 1976 Ranchero GT back in the day with the 351 2V engine and automatic transmission. Was a very comfortable car with a very nice interior, power brakes, and steering along with A/C and with snow tires it went better than most two wheel drive pickups did even with no weight in the back.

Great video the Torino is one of the forgotten muscle cars that deserves more respect. Also I thought some of the 68 models had an option for a 428 ci V8 police interceptor motor or the 428 cobra jet. I know for sure that some of the older Fairlanes had the 428 police interceptor motor, but I was curios of the Torino had it too?

I didn’t think I would be so moved by the car when I looked at the pictures but when I saw it in person, I was just floored how amazing it is, I was lucky enough to find a car with almost no rust, dents and original paint that survived half a century of life. I am going to bring her back to original glory as any classic survivor should be. The weirdest thing, though it was supposed to have bucket seats and a four shift but my car came from the factory with column shift and front bench possibly because of the UAW strikes.

The '68 Fairlane/Torino was my favorite Ford of the late '60s, and the formal coupe was my favorite body, with styling that was clean and sleek. I've test driven several over the years, and even with the 302, they were really peppy. Also, the interior trim, with a generously padded dash, and even padded roof pillars, was quite luxurious, not to mention safer. Luxuries that were mostly replaced with nasty, hard plastic during the cost-cutting '70s. I believe American family-cars should've stayed about this size and weight, instead of becoming the wretched, bloated, excesses we got a few years later!

A real good friend owned one of these in 1987-8 before getting a brand new 1988 Mustang GT. He had the 428-3 spd and though it was pretty ragged out it was still quite fast. He could run about a 15.0 quarter on street tires. I loved riding in that car (I had a jade green 1976 El Camino that no one wanted to ride in) and seeing some of these pics brought back a lot of memories, including the smell of the vinyl. My neighbor had a brand new '68 GT 390 Torino 4 speed, red with white stripes and a white leather interior. It was my first attempt at driving a car with a stick because I had never driven a car before. I remember that he always wiped it down before he put it in the garage. 6 years later I purchased a '69 Fairlane Sportsroof stripper with a factory installed 428 Super Cobra Jet and a 4 speed. If I ever find that same exact car again, I will sell my battle axe of a wife for it . It would be a good deal too, because she's a great cook!

Better hang on to it. A Canadian (Toronto) Cobra must be a one off and extremely rare. I suspect no one has ever heard about one.

Mine was a 390 GT Sportsroof in gold with the black c-stripes. Also had the T&C top loader 4-speed transmission, sometimes called the Rock Crusher crusher because it was virtually indestructible and had the reputation among drag racers of being able to handle much more shock than the heavy-duty Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher. Smoothest-shifting transmission available in its day, untill the linkage wore out...

2005 FOB here , at first I don't like the looks of the muscle cars, more like mutual feeling . 2008 when I was in high school I felt in love with muscle cars, 1, I had a muscle car book and saw many cars loos awesome like GTO, camero, corvette, cuda, 454 chevell, felling proud to know I'm the only Chinese from China driving a supercharged 05 mustang gt ,stick

Branon Fontaine... let me guess you probably drive a pocket rocket rice burner with spray painted black wheels and an exhaust that sounds like air pissing out of a balloon. General Motors designed, engineered, powerful, performing muscle cars before Ford. Ever hear of Chevrolet Corvette from the early 1950s? Imagine that and they're still building them today for upscale clientele.

Great video. First, 1968 brought the restyled Charger. Second, most buyers buyer the design and spent the paycheck on the chick in 1968. Third, your local Gestapo eyeballed and write up cars with muscle badges. Your insurance company loved the premium too.

I bought a used 1968 Torino GT with the 320hp 390 4V and the wide-ratio Toploader 4-speed. One of the best-handling cars ever to come out of Detroit to that time. Still one of my two favorite cars of all time. The other? My wife's 1963 Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe, original engine/transmission was a 2V 260 with two-speed Ford-O-Matic. I replaced that drivetrain with a 351W 4V and C-4 automatic. With a set of premium Pirelli tires, that little Fairlane rode better and handled as well as my buddy's stock 1965 Shelby GT350! And that was just about the time all Mustangs started a price rebound, so I came out ahead in that department, too!

I was stationed in Missouri in the late 60s. One of the guys had the fastback Torino and every time we had a big freeze the rear window would fall out of it's window rubber and shatter when it hit the back seating area. We tried everything to keep it from coming loose but the car had to be taken home and stored in a garage during the winter. Just something never mentioned in the advertisements.

I had the 68' Torino Fastback and I lived in CT...got down to -30 more than once in the 70's...below 0 A LOT...tons of snow and ice(we got a lot of Nor'easters)...sounds to me like whoever installed the window didn't do it right...never heard of that problem with them...sounds like the rubber seal was the wrong one and/or the wrong sealant was used.

Hazel was the most boring show of the early 60s. Every episode was Hazel nagging people to support some social justice cause like "new 'pawk' for the kids, cleaning up the town dump. Just shut up, Hazel and bake a dozen of gooey brownies for Mr. B.

I learned to drive in my dad's 69 Fairlane 302. It was an automatic, jade green two door, but it had lots of power and was a blast to drive...………..especially to a 17 year old kid. I now know why the old man didn't let me drive it very often unless it was to go pick up my grandmother.

Many thanks for profiling the Torino/Fairlane. It's so rare that any quality website or channel profiles these cars. Even the NASCAR version Torinos get very very little attention(Talladega which was an NASCAR Aero-Warrior SuperCar), so little its very hard to come by. The Dodge and Plymouth Aero-Warriors get ALL of the attention, and yet, the Torinos are ignored. I"m very very confused as to why.
