I used to ride wheelies with my 71 Apple Krate 5 speed back in the 70's in its original condition. That's the true test! Ride one on a stock 5 speed. I used to pull it straight up at the age of 10 and ride it for blocks. Great video!

Thanks for posting. I loved the Schwinns back in the 60's & 70's. My best friend had the green paint & slick tire. He could do wheelies across the school yard. I had a black 5 speed Fastback. I couldn't do a wheelie then & I still can't today.

I had an original Apple Krate coaster and it sucked. About all you could do with it was ride wheelies. Stripped it down to the frame in ‘73 and converted it into a DIY BMXer. Put on a regular Stingray fork, motorcycle bars and grips, a cruiser seat, duct tapped plumbing insulation to the top tube, goose neck and handlebar top bar, and wired the spoke junctions together with bailing wire. To this day it’s still one of my favorite bikes I ever had. Lots of these bikes ended up first gen DIY BMXers. Cheers

This is true! There’s nothing like a genuine vintage Schwinn! Original Krate, B-6 front drum brake owner, many 52 JC Higgins Jet Flow too!

Still kicking myself at 54 because I didn't buy the real, rear disk brake Apple Krate used for $110 back in 84 when I worked at my local Schwinn dealer.

I built a 1970 Apple Peeler, I went to a yard sale and saw a Schwinn bike for 2, it, had rear drum atom! Paid $10. Took off wheel, cut spokes, left the whole thing! Took atom brake. I spoked the drum to a nos S-2 rim and made my my chain guard decal “ Double Atom Bomb” had sky high sissy bar cut into shocks, high Hampshire sting ray handlebars, mint bike. Look for tandem! J

Nice bike! Love the mods you did. Gonna have to try swapping the pedels out on my chinese copy from the early 2000s. Ive never been able to wheelie it like that.

Too bad you didn't add some authentic 60's music to this vid, maybe "All along the watchtower", "Born to be wild" or "Gimme Shelter". Bike should have been a little higher quality for the price they're charging. You are not too old to ride a Krate down the street, you are not too old to dress like Eddie Vedder circa 1992, however you ARE too old to wear the Spicoli's.

5 speeds were $101.95 in the 1971 Schwinn catalog I have , coasters (one speed ) were $82.95

What's of waste of money 😓 You will find a real one for $75 to $$300 depends condition and whats original But if you just want a real cheap stingray you will find one for $150 easy
