1969 Chevy Yenko Camaro vs 1969 Chevy Chevelle COPO - Factory Stock Drag Race
Our first car is a 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro. The other a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle COPO. Both cars feature a L72 427 V8. Yenko rated their car at 450 horsepower, but Chevrolet rated the COPO Chevelle at 425 horsepower. Both cars have the same transmission... a 3-speed TH400 automatic. The 1969 Chevelle and the 1969 Yenko Camaro also have the same rear gears, that being 4.33. The COPO Chevelle curb weight (driver NOT included) is 3635 pounds. The weight of the Yenko Camaro WITH driver is 3796 pounds. Yenko only produced 201 total Camaros in 1969, and only 30 of those were equipped with the automatic transmission. The 1969 COPO Chevelle was also rare with only 323 produced in 1969, while 96 had automatic transmissions. A Yenko Camaro was tested by Super Stock and Drag Illustrated in July of 1969; that car was on street tires, but did utilize a set of headers. It ran the 1/4 mile in 12.59 seconds @ 108.07 mph.
Remember, both cars participate in Factory Stock class through F.A.S.T drag racing. Make sure you visit their website. www.fastdrags.com.

Man this makes me miss my 69 Chevelle and Camaro SSs, neither COPO or Yenko but I loved them both. Built 350 I both, Muncie in the velle 350 Turbo in the maro both with 3:73 posi. I actually looked just like old Mickey when you said the Chevelle had a powerglide lol, I almost popped a gasket! Good one dude. This was a good clip too, I would love to see them race more, it could go either way, and I love both so much I won’t be upset about anyone losing.

I remember my dad and my uncle, who are both gone now, talking about cars like these as equipped in the early 70s. At US 30 drag strip, where 1 could run slicks, no one could touch them but a super rich dude that had a 69 L88 vette. The early Max Wedge cars could hang with um, but the win depended on the hole shot. These were consistent low 11 sec cars that could quickly out run their brakes on that short track. As a result of crashes, the track officials mandated rules for roll bars and in some cases parachutes! Many 'run what you brung' guys opted out and ran at other longer tracks.

The 425/450 hp debate started with the '66 Corvettes, the first to get the L72 427s. Early in the production year the engines were rated at 450hp (25hp more than the L78 396s they superseded), but after only a few months they changed it to 425, the exact same as the previous, smaller engines. Why? Nobody seems to know for sure, but I've always seen it as proof that GM was full of sh!t considering their advertised numbers. Yenko knew they were originally advertised at 450, so that's what he advertised them at. When you consider the hp ratings for the L78 396, which was 325hp in El Caminos, 375hp in Chevelles and 425hp in Corvettes, even though they were all built exactly the same, it becomes obvious that GM was just rating the engines at whatever they wanted rather than what the engines actually produced. There's also the case that ALL Chevelle/El Camino 327 and 396 engines were rated lower in the El Camino's for no apparent reason at all, even though they were the exact same engines.

FYI,gm never rated the L78 396/375hp motor at @ 325hp in an elky or anything else for that mater. But the 65 vette 396 motor with same setup/build from gm was rated at 425hp which is what it really put out when built & tuned properly talking gross & not net up on the dyno.
@AlanRoehrich9651
@AlanRoehrich9651 7 ай бұрын
The L-78 396 was only rated at 425 in the Corvette in 1965, because it was shipped with an 850 cfm vacuum secondary carburetor. GM caught a ton of crap from the insurance companies. They issued a bulletin to remove the 850cfm carburetor and replace it with a 780 cfm carburetor, either when the Corvettes returned for service, or before they were sold if they were in inventory. Yes, the 70cfm bigger carburetor *is* worth 50 HP.

What's insane is a Copo Camaro direct from GM costing $7269 with the L88 upgraded to the ZL1 engine package,i didn't see a price for a L72 Copo Camaro listed, but the L72 was a $400+ upcharge over the base price engine.I don't know if it's added to the SS 396 option or the base Camaro period,from a bunch of sites i researched it wasnt listed. Was the Copo Camaro more than the Copo Chevelle with the L72 for $2690 ???!!! If so,That's crazy!!! I just don't get the price difference!!! A $4160 ZL 1 engine package above the car sticker price is astronomical!
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Жыл бұрын
The Yenko Camaros we're COPO cars upgraded ( at extra cost ) with the stripes and badges and silk screened headrests . The outrageous price for the ZL1 was because someone at Chevrolet didn't want to build those cars , and refused to give the buyer a credit for the cast iron engine that was not being installed. Basically if you ordered a ZL1 you paid for the L72 and ZL1 engines . And people wonder why they only sold 2 Corvettes and 69 Camaros with the ZL1 option !

If you're talking the L72 vs LS6, the 427 does make slightly more power but it's down slightly on torque. Same engine aside from from the crank. The longer stroke in the 454 generates more torque but generate more friction so it's down slightly on power.

I watched alot of your videos an they are good. I am however, amazed at some of these ridiculously poor reaction times that cause a vehicle to lose. In this case look back at the Chevelle's reaction time. So bad and with an automatic. Seems when the owners of the vehicles drive they do not demonstrate the cars actual performance.

rare to see a boss 302 at pure stock. There was one last year, but it ran poorly. there is a first generation Z28 on occasion, but they also have recurrent tuning issues.

@@CarsAndZebras I bought my all options '69 Boss 302 Mustang new from TASCA Ford in RI. Bob Tasca Jr helped me with the fine tuning, and I ran it in NHRA pure-stock class for many years turning 13.1-13.3 constantly. I still have that car and now it does mid to high 12's using drag radial tires. '67-'69 Camaro Z28 cars were never a problem to beat. NHRA later put the '69-'70 Mustangs two classes higher after they refactored the HP rating.

@@CarsAndZebras BTW, the secret to getting better traction, with bias play tires, is to overinflate them. Ford Drag team taught me that in spring 1970. It works. My '69 Boss 302 was near 2 seconds quicker. Also, instead of leaving the start line at 1000 rpm, I had to leave at 4000-4500 rpm.
