Good one . Quality can drop easily in the repair game . A few months back i rebuilt a Caterpillar C15 . The crank was supposed to be ground .025 under . This was from a major engine machine shop that does the larger stuff all the time . The crank not only was signed off by the grinder operator , but the inspection area also . When i went to fit the crank , i mic it up to check oil clearance & found they ground it .010 past the .025 . If i had not picked it up , the engine would have had a major failure either on the dyno at the Cat dealer or shortly afterwards . At the end of the day , i would have the finger pointed at me for incorrect assembly ! Cheers 👍

Hey Max, good to hear from you M8. That is sad they missed the number on the crankshaft like that! You're right, had you not caught that it would have been on you. The quality of things since Covid and and the work ethic has gone out the window!. Good shops closing down because of supply chain issues and no good help. That's why I work alone. Good job on the Cat. I am sure not to much gets by you Max. Take care, Ed.

Looking good Ed. Oil pump distortion, I thought that might be the case but wasn’t sure until you made mention. Breaking the edge on the oil holes, as you’ve shown time and time again- details matter. Thanks for sharing.

@@edsmachine93Good morning Ed, I liked how you squared up the one side of the caps and put the oil pump on, that makes the line hone be the best it can be.
@edsmachine933 ай бұрын
@@MostlyOldPartsAndRust Thank you Patrick, I Appreciate it. Yes you have to doit that way, no way around it. These old blocks move alot, factory tolerances, etc. I cut the caps to end up with about .0045/.005 housing bore, then hone. You have to be careful in that process. I try my best to make all five to be close to the same. Before honing. I'll explain it more in detail when we get a chance to talk.👍

Bolting the lump on b4 boring proly is very important?
@edsmachine933 ай бұрын
Yes it is. It will distort the rear main bore .0005 out of round. That factory never machined it like that. Always making it better.
