Glad your engine noise is fixed! On our small blocks we stuck with factory-type distributors, mostly the Direct Connection/Mopar Performance replacement electronic units. Those oversize HEI caps are a pita, and I know they can interfere with both intakes and air cleaners (and as you found, the oil senders). I've been told that adapting the HEI module itself is a good thing as it works better than the Chrysler module. I plan on doing that (though I've never had problems with the Chrysler module).
