What's kinda wild is that back then (1969), Spahn Ranch seemed like a long ways away. From the LA city center to the Ranch is just 30 miles. Back then, there was only a few thousand people around. Today, it's a few billion people.

Several of the photos are the Back Ranch house where my cousin and I bought sears roebuck tires/ammo/lids etc... in 1969. Charley bought stuff on the parents charge cards then resold for cash. I was friendly with Cappy Gillis. My cousin Rod Beebe was working nights at the post office and got busted moving weed.in early 1968. We lived at Indian Acres development across the street, kinda. It was a development built in 1965. The Family wasn't the best crooks. Manson was a 20 watt bulb that burned bright. I'm 72 now.

You are so wrong. There was a major arrest at the Spahn Ranch. Some 20 people were arrested but all were released because the date on the search warrant didn't jive with the actual arrest date, so the judge turned everyone e of them loose. Then they all scattered, some went to Baker ranch, others fled to different states. Tex Watson high tailed it to TexS, and Patricia Krenwinkle took off for Mississipi, or Alabama, not sure of where she went, but she fled and hid out with some relatives.

In 1967 Tex Watson moved from Texas to California. In 1968 Tex, driving in an ancient 1935 Dodge pickup truck, picked up Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson hitchhiking on Sunset Boulevard after both his Rolls Royce and his Ferrari had been wrecked. Tex drove to Dennis' mansion and Dennis invited Tex in. That's were Tex Watson met Charlie Manson. In the book Manson in His Own Words, Charlie said, "It seems a little absurd that Dennis Wilson would be hitchhiking. But Dennis was kind of a rebel. So, as it happened, both his cars were laid up, and he was thumbing it home. After that, we saw a lot of Watson. Watson showed up at the ranch, broke and hungry, with nowhere else to turn."

@@rexterrocks Yeah, I have Tex's book and the book Manson in His Own Words because I was interested it what they had to say for themselves, I don't have the Prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter book because it seems all Bugliosi does is vilify Sadie and Charlie, etc. as evil monsters, Bugliosi claimed little Sadie stabbed Sharon Tate to death, yet Tex admitted that it was he that stabbed Sharon Tate to death and all Sadie did was sit and try to hold Sharon's arms like Tex told her to do, Bugliosi claimed Manson had evil witchy superpowers to stop Bugliosi's watch by staring at him, absurd shit like that.

@@StevieStitches I agree with you concerning the fact that Sadie didn't stab Sharon. As for Bugliosi's book, I think it's a fascinating read, well worth the time. Manson's mug shot says 5'7", which he was. The famous shot of him against the ruler showing 5'1" is incorrect, because if you project the rest of the ruler to the ground, it start at least at negative 6 inches. So he was the low end of average, and he slouched over, so people tended to notice he was slightly short, but not 5'1" which would be abnormally short. Wikipedia of course lies about this.

He was definitely not 5'7". He was approx 5'3". There are numerous accounts of his height in booking reports, etc. and you can see by comparisons in various photographs that he was very short ie nowhere near 5'7"

I've heard several people who knew Manson comment that he was just over 5ft tall, but I just checked wiki and it said 5'6". Even his actual height is a mystery.

@@SL-vi4tk No way he was 5'6", but I think him being such a midget only added to his mystique i.e. how could a guy so short hold such sway over his followers? Answer - he was a sociopath, and they are often charmers, and always con men...

I am surprised at the condition of these people. In interviews, I hear them talk about “pretty girls”…that’s what enticed others to join…all the “pretty girls”. I’m looking at unwashed hair, facial breakouts, filthy clothing. I am not seeing what I thought I would see in their faces.

It was different times back then! Beauty was judged differently & that was also when they were deep into LSD & other substances so they lost their focus on looking their best!

@@brandonJThornton well I was alive back then and I dunno if I agree totally. Pretty girls wore short skirts, or long leather strands, braids in the front or hair pulled back with symmetrical facial features. Girls like Susan Dey from Partridge Family. These girls all look a hot mess.
