The "Hippie" is a portrayal of Steven "Clem" Grogan, a member of the Manson Family who participated in the 1969 murder of Donald Shea. Shea was a ranch hand at Spahn Ranch who had also worked in Hollywood as a stunt man. Having Grogan get his ass kicked by a fictional stunt man perfectly encapsulates Tarantino's recurring themes of poetic justice and irony.
