Full restoration of a 1969 Tonka "Snorkel" Fire Truck steel toy.
You might want to run this one at 1.5 times speed, it's a bit lengthy. I just didn't want to leave out any of the process.

Thanks for posting. I had one of these as a kid in the early 70's. We would start small backyard fires and then hook up the garden hose to the hydrant adaptor which would then connect to the truck via the two black rubber hoses. The arm had a pretty good reach and you got a nice stream of water out of the nozzle attached to the bucket. Could you imagine how a modern day parent would react if their young kids were out back starting and putting out fires today?

Hi, Thanks for the comment. This, in my opinion, is the coolest toy vehicle that Tonka made. The hydrant itself is just the coolest toy. Well-made with its own little wrench. The arm was really interesting to me also, well-engineered. The spring and the offset rod holds the bucket perfectly level as the arm is raised up, and, if I hadn't photographed how it came apart, I may never have figured out how to put it back together. You are exactly right though, it invited youngsters to set things on fire so we could put them out. The '70s was a great time to be a kid! Sadly, I never got this truck as a kid as my parents probably figured out it would invoke the little pyro in all of us. Thanks again for the comment and for watching! I really appreciate it. Cheers!

I still have my Tonka Snorkle from my childhood. It's looks about like this one before the restoration. I found a pristine one for my grandson. I plan on restoring my old one. Thank you for this, brought back a lot of good memories with my dad and late brother. Dad found all my old Tonkas in their basement. I've got plenty of restoration work but your channel is a Godsend!

OMG!!! I had one of these in the 70s. In fact, it's still sitting on a shelf, covered in cobwebs in my late dad's shed. Perhaps I should do something about it???

I've loved fire trucks since I was little growing up in a small town, one of my favorites was always the snorkel. Watching this video took me back there, thank you! For a few moments I was happy again. Amazing restoration, great video definitely subscribing.

What chemicals did you use to clean the white plastic parts?
@onemansgarage6203
@onemansgarage6203 3 жыл бұрын
I soaked it in 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide and set it out in the sun for several hours. Higher percentage peroxide can be used along with ultra violet lights if the yellowing is severe enough. My seats weren't in too bad a shape so regular peroxide was sufficient to do the job. I also soaked it in hot, soapy water for about 6 hours prior to that. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

do you plan to get into powder coating?
@onemansgarage6203
@onemansgarage6203 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, eventually. I've seen some of the restorers use the powder coat and it tends to cover a lot of the finer details on the smaller vehicles. This firetruck, for example has fairly shallow pressed lines for the doors and handles. I'm fearful that powder would cover a lot of that up, and it tends to orange peel a bit. Plus, I've never done it so I try to stick to what I know. Quote of the day - "All disaster lacks is the proper tools and someone who doesn't know how to use them." I do have a powder coater (still in its box). I need to set up a filter booth and get an oven. I will, one day soon, give it a go. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

I have powder coating equipment now but I find it covers up the small details. I actually prefer paint because it is easier to control the final finish. Thanks for the comment and for watching my video.

@@onemansgarage6203 Desculpe ,mas o acabamento com tinta em pó é bem mais profissional e perfeito principalmente em uma peça como esta que tem um tamanho grande. Continuo assistindo seus videos parabéns.
