This is a radio/film merge of sequential highlights of the 1970 NFC Divisional Playoff, 49ers at Vikings. My thanks to Bill Fox, who recorded this on December 27, 1970, and who gave me this a few years back.
Note that there are some very minor momentary audio skips in the recording on occasion, but they don't hurt the broadcast.
Unfortunately, except for some shots from the 1970 49er and Viking team films, the bulk of the available game footage is from a very poor Game-Of-The-Week film transfer done by NFL Films that is VERY dark and underexposed.
I've tried to improve things a bit, but it still looks bad. That's mainly why I've waited so long to work on this one.
After the game there are 14 minutes of postgame locker room interviews, and then a 30-minute broadcast of the 49ers arriving back at the SF airport later that evening to an electrified crowd.
Great stuff that would be lost to the ages if not for Bill Fox...

@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 I'm surprised at how amateurish he sounds (at least 1st Qtr) bc I've known about Lon from the 60's and never heard anything but good about him. Anyway, those Niner teams were Super Bowl material, just never caught a break, especially that killer Dallas game/comeback, UGH!! @@bishlap For those 1970-72 seasons, the Niners were near the top of the heap, but yeah, could never get by Dallas in the postseason. Brodie is borderline HOF material in my book, and he might be in had the Niners gotten to the Super Bowl any of those seasons.

@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 NO argument here. 1 SB win and Brodie's in. Ironic that Niners were better and probably would have beaten the Dolphin team that Cowboys smashed in SB. The next year was the unbeaten team, but that previous year I'm certain Niners would have dusted Miami same way Dallas had.

This game is so memorable to me because it was the first appearance of the 49ers in the playoffs for a very long time. Since it was in Minnesota, it wasn't blacked out on local TV (KPIX). The NFC Championship game the next week against Dallas was blacked out locally, but we went to Chico to watch it there as that city was beyond the 100 mile blackout radius in effect at the time. There actually were some large AMPEX black and white video tape recorders available for home use then. Very expensive and the tapes were big, expensive, and limited to one hour per reel of tape. A TV tuner with video and audio out was just as rare. I had a friend in Dublin who had one and recorded his daughters dance competitions. He couldn't record the game. Salinas and Monterey were in the blackout zone too.

It's nice to see someone else recalling those days of the blackout rule. Today's NFL audiences don't realize how easy they have it to view the games on TV. What was paradoxical back then was ABC-TV not blacking-out the college games that were played locally. The occasional Stanford or Cal game played at home were televised locally.
@camoss3724
@camoss3724 6 ай бұрын
I didn't realize until recently that all NFL playoff games back then were blacked out in the local markets. I wasn't quite six years old then, but neither of the Colts' playoff games that year (they had home field for both the divisional and championship playoff) were't televised in the Baltimore area. Pete Rozelle, otherwise a rather forward thinker when it came to football and television, was adamant about the rule, claiming the blackouts were necessary in order to encourage fans to buy tickets to the games rather than staying at home and watching on television. It wasn't until 1973 that the league implemented the "72-hour rule" meaning that the game needed to be a sellout 72 hours before game time in order for the blackout to be lifted in the home team's local viewing area.

The ugliness of the "old" NFL is when shitty refs calls were made - especially in late game critical situations - there was no way to challenge the call and expose the error. More ugliness was the players were paid peanuts and had poor medical/pension coverage; when those players retired, many of their family lives were severely compromised from poor medical/retirement issues. None of the owners from this era had any such problems.

A compelling lesson for football teams. Even a great defense can only take you so far come playoff time. Even a great individual play putting you out in front early can be slowly reversed over 60 minutes if your offense is impotent. SF was a more balanced team, very good on both sides of the ball. Minnesota was excellent on one side, average on the other. Cuozzo, Snead and Lee all seem to have been strong second string QB's, decent as starters but not measuring up to John Brodie. When Warren Moon left the Oilers, I recall a similar scenario where the team gambled its season on the combined talent of Cody Carlson, Bucky Richardson and Billie Joe Tolliver equalling one Moon. They weren't, though through no fault of their own.

Yes, the slow-motion of NFL Films was their signature, and the majority of their film was shot at two-thirds normal speed. I had to speed up each clip by about a third in order to get it to match the calls, so yeah, lots of meticulous work just doing that :) And the sideline audio was a bonus - most NFL Films footage of games doesn't have that.

The referee for the game is Pat Haggerty (number 40). When he signaled touchdown or a good kick, he would raise his hands part of the way and then all the way up..the Brodie TD at 32:45 is an example of this. Haggerty officiated well into the 1980s...along with Jerry Markbreit and Ed Hochuli these were the referees I remember the most.

So many Viking dropped passes...just an ineffective offense. I think Cuozzo was 9-27 because of it. SF offense was effective without being spectacular, and their special teams set up a very easy , very short (about 12 yards) scoring drive near the end of the game. Most of the 2nd half had no scoring whatsoever....until the last minute.. SF's best season in a generation, while the NFL-leading Viking defense (10 pts/game, from 1969-71) had to be wondering, privately, about a lack of support..

After this loss, my understanding was that some Lion players were disgusted at their coach for playing Landry instead of Munson at QB, the perception apparently that Landry was the team's golden boy/chosen one/ company man, whereas Munson was still the better QB. Can anyone elaborate or correct this idea? Was it only a rumor?
@davevolskysbackdoor5673
@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Жыл бұрын
I'd never heard that. I wasn't around back then having been born in '72, but looking at the game logs from that season, I see that Munson started the first 8 games at QB for the Lions, and they went 5-1 in the first 6 games, with Munson throwing just one interception in 115 attempts. Landry was getting some playing time during those 8 games as well, appearing in 6 of them and throwing no interceptions in 24 attempts. Games 7 and 8 were losses though for the Lions, as Munson came back to earth, throwing 3 picks in each game. It appears those two games caused Munson to lose his starting job. Landry finished off the game 8 loss and started the final 6 games of the regular season, losing the week 9 game, but then winning 5 straight to put Detroit in the playoffs. Landry was very effective in those 5 wins, throwing 95 passes, tossing 8 TD's, and only being picked off 3 times. Hindsight may be 20/20, but the Lions were riding high on Landry at that point. They weren't going to replace him to start the playoffs.
@massvt3821
@massvt3821 3 ай бұрын
Greg Landry played very well in the 2nd half of the 70 season, and he offered the art of scrambling and occasionally running the ball, something that Munson lacked. Both were above average, but you can't argue with the Lions' success from 1970-72, and Landry mostly at the helm, with 3 strong winning seasons..
