Here is a holy grail. Only 600 L-78 Camaros were made total! How many survived and how many are Rally Sports! This one has been body off frame restored to factory condition. All were 4-speeds and this one is also a very desirable Rally Sport. The L-78 is verified right on the cowl tag. The motor appears to be original, trans and rear are correct.
What does the L78 mean? It was the most potent 396, rated at 375 hp but the actual dyno tested hp was 425! It featured higher compression, bigger valves, solid lifter cam, square port heads, aluminum intake and a big Holley carb. These were running son of a guns. Today they are very desirable and collectable investment cars. The 1970 Camaro was the lowest production L78 of all. These cars were not even marketed.
EXTERIOR: No rust or damage, the body is very clean and straight. It's smooth from the rockers to the roof. Repainted it's original Camaro gold color, the metal flake is laid out evenly and the clear coat is polished very glossy. Blacked out SS tail panel. It features the very desirable Rally Sport which has the extended nose, split bumpers and relocated turn signals. It also has front and rear spoilers, sport mirrors and the deluxe trim around the hood and rain gutters. All the chrome looks new. Up front the headlight bezels, lenses and grill look new. On the sides the emblems, door handles, trim on top of the doors look new. All new glass. The jambs are painted real nice, all the weather strips and window seals are new. The SS wheels are restored and have BFGoodrich tires.
INTERIOR: Restored like new. Carpet was replaced, there is a Hurst shifter sticking out of the hump. The cushions are replaced front and back, new upholstery. Dash pad, instrument bezel was replaced. Gauges were restored, it has correct 6,500 redline tachometer and rebuilt clock. New glovebox liner and owner's manual.B The events Knobs heater control panel were replaced⅕ Door panels are excellent. Headliner was replaced but has some wrinkles. It has a retro stereo in the factory hole, there are factory speaker grills in back with upgraded speakers.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: It is completely restored and detailed. After my research and inspection I am convinced it is a correct 1970 396-375 hp motor, very possibly the original one to this car. The casting codes and dates are correct. The stamp on the motor appears to be original with factory broach marks. The code is CKO, assembly date is August 7th. Because of a strike and production issues the 70 Camaro wasn't built until mid February. The motors were still being built and stacked up, so it is normal to have a motor built several months before the car. The matching vin # of this car is stamped by the oil filter. It has the square port heads and factory aluminum intake. It has correct chrome valve covers with the spot weld dimples, correct deep groove pulleys, dated plug wires etc. Upgrades include headers, aluminum radiator and a new Holley carb. The correct Holley carb is restored and included. The correct water pump is also included. The trim tag on the firewall designates L78. I spent hours researching and inspecting the tag and it is my strong opinion it is original. Features include power steering and a restored power brake system with a cadmium plated booster. All the metal surfaces are smooth and painted real nicely, bottom of the hood is glossy and has new insulation. New wiring harness.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: It is clean dry metal with a neatly applied spatter paint. New reproduction rubber mat, jack assembly, wiring harness and weatherstrip. Under the trunk lid and the jamb are painted glossy.
UNDERSIDE: The body was removed from the sub frame and chassis components for a complete restoration. The floor pan was replaced, all clean metal with no rust. They were resprayed in the red oxide primer just as it would have left the factory. The front end components are completely rebuilt and detailed. The ball joints, bushings, steering components were replaced. It has upgraded shocks. The sub frame and a-arms are smooth metal with a satin black finish. There's new body bushings. In back it has new springs, bushings, Koni gas shocks and it has the swaybar which is correct for an SS. My research said SS 396 cars have welded in swaybar brackets which this car has. The fuel system including the tank, straps, sending unit and fuel lines were replaced. It has a custom dual exhaust system an X-pipe The brake system has been restored- new brake lines, hoses, e-brake assembly and it has disc in front.

Yes sir..... I was 6 years old, in 1973, when my sister's boyfriend rolled up in a 70, split bumper Camaro. I still remember that car to this day. My sister had a 69 but it was the base model with the 302 and I know his car wasn't a 396. They asked me which one I liked better and without hesitation, I pointed at the 70. There was no questing, then and now, how sexy that car is to car guys of any age. And to this very day, it's the best engineering and aesthetic design GM ever produced for the Camaro line. BTW, my sister ended up marrying that guy, four years later, and they are still together to this day. Yes, they have a restored 69 in the garage, not the original car of my sisters, but one they restored, over the last 13 years, on piece at a time. The "new" Camaro is a disgrace. When will America start producing cars with character again???

@@chuckhaugan4970 NGL the split bumper is one of the only models/designs that i cant even choose weather i like vinyl or non vinyl....its that SOLID of a car/build car to car. Almost has the appeal of MOPAR or at least it has the appeal to me "the split bumper" the way MOPAR's appeal to those fans with their factory hemi builds....even though the 2 tones are the "RAREST" and IMO ugliest. Even a triple black as rare as it seems....a triple black split bumper camaro over a triple black vette for me.

Agreed this is a much much better way of showcasing the car, especially the interior. Instead of a basic brief glance over it like normal, it actually gives you a good thorough look as if you were there looking at it here.

Your description regarding the strike at GM that led to some problems verifying some components reminded me of a 1972 SS Camaro that I restored. The car was bone stock original when I bought it, but as you know, GM had a major strike that year and they cannibalized components from many other models to complete construction of various cars. My car in particular had corvette heads, a Monte Carlo SS transmission and a rear differential from a Chevelle. I remember talking to a guy at the USCCA and even he was interested in what I was finding so that they could help chase down the history of verifying originality of components for those situations.

I dream of cloning one of these with an L78 of my very own. Only issue is how bad i want to go custom with it i have ambitions as high as fabbing in the front grill to have no seams possibly even a 1 piece bumper/front clip With holes/chin spoiler mount points so it can be removed for CLEAN/show Appareance. and possibly bring up the rocker/line by 1" and accent it a little, or possibly flatten it out to give it more of a T/A look. Hammer out the fenders to have a z28...look of no profile/edge hanging off the fender line...while being slightly widened. Either way the only car i want the L78 in is a split bumper build...or a 66 nova II which is going to need to be "FITTED". Considering the rare/appeal of an L78 70 camaro i have a soft spot for this build.

@marchicago
@marchicago Жыл бұрын
Jeffrey, very good question. The L78 was rated at 425 hp in Chevy's full-sized cars (Impala, etc) and the 'Vette, vs 375 hp in the Camaro and Chevelle. Essentially, the difference boiled down to a better, freer flowing cast-iron exhaust manifold. On the Chevlle and Camaro, GM used a truck manifold owing to clearance issues. The center X-member interfered with the higher performance "center dump" type manifold. NOW you may be asking "How could an exhaust manifold free up 50 horsepower?" and you would be right. The L78 was underrated no matter which rating GM used, but there wasnt a 50 horse difference between the two applications. However, from a marketing perspective, it was in GM's best interest to give the higher priced (and higher profit-margin) vehicles the best HP rating possible. This is my understanding of the reason for the inconsistent hp ratings regarding the mighty L78.

didnt even advertise these....bc with the right REAR end/corvette gears. This thing would Handle its fair share of "heavier" cars at the strip. Then again the LT1 made 370. So If anything GM knew what was on the table with this platform.
@gordocarbo
@gordocarbo 6 ай бұрын
The L78 woulda handed the Z its butt in most cases. Had both and although I love the LT1 the solid lifter 396 hand down so much better in every respect. If it were me Id put some AFRs on and paint them and an updated SFT grind.

Nice car. Lets see the build sheet, otherwise I highly doubt it is an original RS. Because as you mentioned it does not have the correct steering wheel as it has an SS wheel off a accent group interior optioned car. Any RS car had an RS on the steering wheel and no where else if it was an SS or Z28. I which case emblems superseded the RS relative to outside. I had a 1970 SS/RS 396/350 PS,PB,AC,Tilt wheel, rear defrost.accent group with wood trim & cloth interior w console, rear small chin spoiler 4sp m21 factory hurst shifter, 3.71 posi. 12 bolt, front and back sway bars, Burnt Copper Cream Vinyl top with olive green interior Ya baby now thats a color combo LOL. It had almost every option available which my brother bought in 1971 from the original owner. Very solid car. light rear end, It wasn't too fast as is would spin while my brothers 300HP 1967 4sp walked away with better 50/50 weight distribution and IRS! Sold it to a buddy as I just had to buy a restored 1965 Corvette factory L78 Red/Black Conv that made the Camaro feel like a kitty by comparison. Would really love to find that car however, as it was so solid to drive as well as beautiful.
