1970 Plymouth 'Cuda AAR in EB5 Blue Muscle Car Of The Week Video#78
The 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda AAR is one of the most distinctive Muscle Cars ever to leave the factory, with its striking strobe stripe, aggressive black nose and scoop, and of course, the free-breathing 340 6-Pack V8 under the hood.

My ‘Cuda was also in B5 blue. It was a stunning color that would shine like nothing else. I had the 340, but not the AAR package. With black interior and vinyl top, I had the rally cluster, slap stick, buckets, PS and brakes, 15 in Cragar S/S wheels with GR 60 Goodrich T/As on all four corners, plus a couple of other minor mods to further improve on what already was impressive handling. I bought it used from a friend - i actually and pestered the living hell out of him until he finally gave in and agreed to sell it to me for $2700 (which truthfully was a bit over top money then). It was pristine when I got it, and because I felt very privileged to own it, I kept it looking new all the time. Loved that car!

I've only seen the AAR Cuda with flush NACA scoops on the hood. One of my favourite cars. I had a 1970 challenger 440 RT/SE and a 1972 340 Challenger, a 69 GTX and a 68 Charger 440 RT. I always wanted a Cuda. Only me to blame on that one. Almost bought an AAR Cuda from the original owner in 1973. Great post and colour. Thanks

The one thing that always freaked me out, was how the hood would bubble out at high speeds... Always had the fear of the thing breaking apart during the drive. It never did, but it certainly got your attention in the beginning.. LOL. Miss them so bad... a friend of mine had the Black on Gold with the louvers rear window add-on, pistol grip 4-speed, black interior... he parked it close to his girlfriend's home one day, as they would not let him park it near the farmhouse, as it shook the windows. Anyways, he parked it on the wrong side of the road one night, and a drunk driver hit the Cuda at a speed estimated at 70 MPH. left side to left side head-on collision and sent the Cuda 200 plus feet down the road. I almost bought it for a couple of hundred dollars, but he decided to keep it. Over time we parted friends and i bumped into him a few years later. Ask him about the Cuda, and he got rid of it to the scrappers. That was the last time I saw that A**Hole ever again.

I know of a house that the owner doesn’t have anyone living in it but he has had a ‘65 or ‘66 Mustang fastback sitting in the driveway for a long time. This last fall he unfolded a blue tarp over it then bungeed it on tightly and folded the loose ends in. No airflow under the tarp and that fastback with no rust that I saw will probably have some as I type this. So sad.

That is a beautiful muscle car but I just can't get used to the 'flat black' on the hood. I know a lot of people will disagree with me but in my opinion it looks like primer, and like it needs to be painted. That shade of blue is so gorgeous I think it would look better if the hood was blue like the rest of the car and the air scoop was left with the flat black and maybe even a solid stripe down the middle of the front in the flat black.

I'm surprised... you sound like a millennial and millennials live for flat black. The color of choice...If you are a millennial paint your car or motorcycle flat black. I've seen a few old Mopars that originally had flat black stripes / graphics from the factory the the owners changed to a gloss black and they look like shit that way. If you own an old Mopar and are going with "factory look" paint then keep the black flat...nobody designed better than Chrysler back then. And BTW that flat black hood "paint" was actually not paint at all...it is a blackout coating called Organisol that Chrysler used on certain parts of a car to black out that particular part. Like behind the grill for instance. It was used on race car hoods to reduce glare from the sun which was why it was used on AAR 'cudas and T/A Challengers as they were replica factory race cars.

walton cool, I wasn't aware of all that. But yeah, and like the other commenter said it would be worth more money leaving it that way, so I probably wouldn't change it after all. 🙂 As for my classification, I was born in '72 so I think I'm a gen X'er?? Not sure exactly.

Ralley gauge cluster was an extra cost option. By my SWAG, probably 50% had the std gauge cluster. Mine came with std cluster. FYI: they made all these. AAR/TA's in a few production runs over several weeks. A lot of them were not specifically customer ordered. So they had a seemingly random amalgamation of options on top of the basic AAR package, which was a loaded Cuda already.

@@hamtrak Not surprised at all. I'll bet the 340/6 was good for 380-385 horses in 1970. It probably made almost as much horsepower as the 383 big block did that year but the 340 didn't have the torque the Mopar big blocks did. My buddy has a 73 Duster 340/4 speed and even for a low compression 340 from 1973 that car is really quick. He removed the smog pump, advanced the timing on it a bit, and installed headers and dual Flowmaster Super 40s on it but its bone stock other than that.
