This early 70’s rudder was waterlogged, cracked and showing its age so it gets thoroughly checked over and repaired for a few more years of good service on a contessa 32.

About Me
I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

my explanation for liking sanding on youtube is two part: 1. it's not me doing it 2. it's very satisfying when in time lapse

Great share thank you! I am about to try an extend the length of my rudder because it was cut short to the bottom gudgeon with a dodgy heel plate after the previous owner put her on some rocks on Fraser Island. I am a bit intimidated by the job but I am enjoying working with glass and epoxy, amazing stuff! Like anything you know when something will work and when it won't, I suspect I am overdoing some things a bit but am slowly starting to learn to trust the material. Thanks again, owe you a beer!

It's interesting watching you refit 30+ year old plastic boats. In the US we have Morgan's, Pearson's, and such. Their design flaws are epic. Love watching how you refit design flaws from once upon a time euro boats.

Have you seen the project that's going on with the channel all things contessa 26? He bought a old contessa and I believe he said it has some significant history as far as for the contessa sailboats. It was in rough shape but he'll get her back in the water. I love your channel because you're such a skilled craftsman who does things the correct way the first time.

for the top seal, i was thinking as i was watching, if it was me i would just pour some epoxy in the top and hope for the best, but that probably wont work because the epoxy will be to brittle and will crack as soon as force is applied to the rudder and so I wonder what George is going to do!, George: im going to pour some epoxy in the end...
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Done this before, 9 times out of ten it’s a successful fix, as long as the stock can’t move in relation to the blade (which is why we check the tangs) then it should hopefully seal. Epoxy used because it bonds more readily to the stock than poly which shrinks as it cures.

I am currently making new bushes for my jaguar 27. What amount of clearance did you go for on the rudder shaft? I am worried about going too big and they wear too quickly or too tight and they bind.

I went back and watched a couple videos of yours that I missed and I really enjoyed the boat tour of your sailboat that you gave. Your boat is quite awesome. I could see myself living on something like that or a little bit larger than 32 contessa. The lines of the Contessa are those classic ones that are a thing of beauty. Is your sailboat a product of European design and build?
@RefitandSail

It’s an Ed Dubois design from the early 80’s so considerably more modern hull shape than the contessa, not as pretty and not as nice to sail but a good and inexpensive cruising platform

Regarding a lathe. I heard opinion that actually old models tend to be far better made then current commercial models. Not mentioning a price.
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
At the price point I was buying I could get a new Chinese made hobby lathe or an old school light-industrial lathe, this is far superior even if it’s perhaps not got all the bells and whistles, it runs without flex/deflection when making a largish cut so I’m really pleased.

@@RefitandSail Lathe , press drills, metal mills and sawing machines. Looks like those days best way to buy is second hand on eBay. If you know what to look for , you not only getting superior quality tool but for fraction of original price, and actual value. Ps. Really enjoy your channel. 👍

Funny , why don't they use bronze inside the rudder , no worries about crevice corrosion.

My rudder internals are all bronze, including the post , they just made it thicker to compensate for its softness . I had it off the boat last year to take a look and there was nothing to repair . I drilled into it as well and found no foam core . It was solid glass ! No wonder it weighed over 300 lbs !

Love your videos but having spent MANY MANY hours freeing studs, bolts, nuts, screws, impellors, props, Etc. I am now a great believer in anti-sieze, Noalox, marine grease, PTFE, Etc for which decades of marine techs have probably silently said a quiet prayer of thanks. I have used anti-sieze on prop shafts and don't remember having a problem, what issues have you experienced?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
I am also a great believer in greasing parts that may need to come undone as I may be the person that has to do it next time but the only exclusion is in a taper as they rely on the friction of having a tight and close fit to work.
@matthewsellers82
@matthewsellers82 Жыл бұрын
@@RefitandSail The internet mostly agrees. Although if you think of generator engines, they can be ordered either straight or tapered shaft both with single keyways are we saying we'd grease one and not the other? I personally can not remember seeing a problem from a greased taper but then my memory is not what it was :)
