Refit and Sail

Refit and Sail

Жыл бұрын

The Contessa 32 Refit continues with many smaller jobs like painting, varnishing, fixing wobbly stanchions and many other little jobs. I also talk about my Mirka Deros sander and why I chose it.
I’m thirsty after all that talking, buy me a beer?…. www.paypal.me/RefitAndSail
If you have enjoyed this video and/or learned something you can now buy me a beer using the link above to make a donation to the channel. If I end up with more beer tokens than I need then I will put your donations towards a better camera, lighting and other equipment so it ultimately benefits you the viewer. I don’t do Patreon, I don’t sell T shirts but you can help support this growing channel. Thank you
My thanks to the owners of these boats for giving me permission to create this content based on the refit of their boats.

About Me
I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

I find watching people paint and varnish to be relaxing. The key to that statement is the "other people" bit....

Ha... Painting and sanding is dull to do, but the time lapse is actually nice to watch. Who would have thought ? And moreover it captures a lot of the technique things that are hard to articulate, so watching has actually improved my craft.

IMO, if you would to show all the painting and varnishing in real speed, yes, it would get long and boring but, the way you do it I think is the best way to approach this topic. You explain the product you use, why you use it, how many layers you apply and different percentages of "thickening" in order to achieve the result you want and then you give us a nice time lapse to see all of that applied... Great work! 👍👍👏👏

I quite like the painting and varnishing and sanding and doing them as a time lapse with montage music works well; if something unusual or complex is being painted/varnished/sanded, you can show that in real time speed. Good stuff!

Hafa Adai from Guam, George! No skipping forward to report or confess. Zero, or better said, Zed?! Awesome work, as always, and fascinating to watch. Please keep it going! PS: We have a typhoon approaching Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands (Rota, Tinian and Saipan). Send a good thought, please!

Just watching this episode after a trip to the Netherlands where I could spot numerous beautiful vintage boats (sail or engine, leisure craft or bulk carrier) and I can better imagine now how much time, patience and dedication it takes to either maintain or refit them. I guess that for one legendary flying Dutchman, it needs hundreds of sanding-fairing-painting Dutchmen 😂

Hello George. Sanding and painting. I guess the former is only carried out because it is necessary and the better it is done the better and easier the paint job. It is keeping that in mind that makes the sanding bearable, for me at least because it shows if the prep isn't good ! A bit of time lapse of each is good but I agree it does all take up server space somewhere and you explain what needs explaining. Things might have changed but for certain reasons I do not have or want Paypal, I would like to buy you a beer though. I think there is a donation thing called Ko-Fi but you might not wish to set that up. As you say the filming and editing does take time and there is no harm mentioning it now and then, if people don't like it there are thousands of other channels to watch. That boat is going to be a real gem when she is finished, very fortunate to have owners keeping these great boats going and people like you doing great work for them.

Hi Paul and thanks for the comment. No worries, not everyone wants to use PayPal, that’s fair enough. Can’t cover all bases as it’s a nightmare to manage. Got to fund the channel somehow and the ad revenue is pennies so PayPal seems the simplest way buy maybe I’ll look into merch or patreon but whatever the option there is a third party trying to take a cut so it’s hard to know what the right thing is to do.

Great video as always George, even the painting! Everything you you do is good information. I wish Hempel locker and bilge was available here in Canada, the closest I get is Bilgekote, which is not bad, but it gets yellowish with time.

Got a tip, to stop the bit from falling out of the drill tighten the chuck as you would and then go to undo it gently and you'll feel a click and then the chuck will be a little slack, it turns out that is a locking feature on the chuck, all drills have it and it's not in the manual, I found out by watching LRN2DIY on here
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Ok, thanks, I’ll ty it although I know my Chuck is not working as well as it should, think it needs cleaning out as it collects dirt and dust when drilling upwards.

For a novice what is the advantage of the flo coat over on the port side over the paint you used on the starboard?

George, thank you for your videos, I'm following along as I've got a 1979 mirage 28 and swapping out the yanmar YSE8 for a beta 20. I'm prepping the engine bay to flow coat and just need to know do I have to get the bay back to glass or just key it ready for repainting. Complete newbie to this so your videos are my encyclopedia.. Keep em coming.... 👍

If applying flowcoat it’s best to apply it to the original flowcoat or hull laminate as applying it to previously painted surfaces can cause the old paint to bubble off and it won’t adhere. So any paint needs to be removed but if it’s old gel/flowcoat then it just needs abrading and cleaning. If it’s been previously painted you can save yourself a load of sanding but painting again.

Hi mate. When you are taking that paint off the interior (you mentioned that horrible blue paint that clogs up your sanding disks) what grit do you use? I am guessing somewhere between 40-80 grit?
@RefitandSail

80 normally.

Do you "tip" off the final coat of varnish with a brush after you roll it?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
No tipping off needed, I do sometimes tip off varnish on vertical surfaces but if the surface being covered is horizontal you can get a bit more varnish on and if suitably thinned it will self-level from the roller.

It’s like being in a night club (although I’m a little old for that now) but if you don’t ask you don’t get and I’d rather not put my content behind a pay wall or keep back the best content for patrons only. Filming, editing and associated works take a lot of effort and I’m very grateful to those that have donated to the channel so that I can buy better equipment.
