While cruising down the road in central Florida, Tom Cotter spots a familiar-looking pair of GT-package headlights. Languishing in a pile of leaves outside the owner’s house is a moss-ridden relic of the early pony-car craze-a 1965 Mustang. Originally a project car for the owner and his son, the car started the process of becoming one with the lawn after it got its hood smashed in. The owner’s hopes that his grandson would take up the cause proved fruitless. But when Tom wanders out back to peer into a garage, he discovers another titan of Ford muscle. Hiding in the shadows is none other than a 1970 Shelby Mustang GT500 convertible, and as luck would have it, the owner is eager to share the car’s story.

I've seen lots of cars slowly rust away because of people with that attitude "I'm gonna fix that up one day". There was a 67 Ford Galaxie parked in a backyard that I would drive past every day. At first it was a nice restorable car but after 10 years it was a bad rusted out parts car. Sad. Another guy, I met, has a 69 Pontiac GTO sitting in his garden on the dirt. He wants $30,000 for it but the floors and undercarriage are rotted out because its been lying in the dirt for 20 years and everything mechanical is seized. But it's going to be worth $150,000 when its restored. The last one is a local upholstery shop has a 56 Chev panel wagon as advertisement sitting out front. Hasn't moved in 20 years, every year there's just a little bit more rust creeping in on it.

I had a 64 1/2 Mustang 289, 4spd, with center console, 4-barrel, convertible with the factory tach gauge thing on the steering column. No power anything. Bought it for 600 dollars and it needed everything in 1970. I learned how to fix everything on that thing down at a friend of my father's junkyard in the Bronx NY. It was a miracle...that I did not kill myself in it. I drove like a madman at 18 yrs old.

Later and with no other visit required did I suddenly realize what inline 6 that actually WAS... I grabbed a hand truck and my quad and returned to my home 2 hrs later with a Series 1 E-Type engine... I had it sold in 45 minutes! Always good to explore where safe and possible.

@@thebigpicture2032 no but little by little they rot away and are no longer viable cars. I have an 87 mustang ordered from ford with at 5.0 5 speed with blue window sticker still on it and build sheet under seat. It had 15,557 miles original on it when I bought it. Vortech V1 supercharger, gt 40 heads, original Cobra R intake MSD ignition, stainless exhaust limited slip rear, stand alone fuel management system ect. It has until this year sat for 7 years after a fuel/spark and air problem no one could figure out. The paint job on it was brand new after I got hit in it. I had the whole car painted. Even in a garage, rust bubbles came about, mice, the new tires vulcanized, it just got worse. now to get the car back to mint it's costing way more than it would have 7 years ago (a new performance shop in town figured it out, Rabid Customs). If I had continued to let it sit and "enjoy" it, it would be worthless and laughable. That's like saying "yes that's my 57 chevy out there, yep it's a Bel air and a 2 door non post V8 car. No she's not for sale I just enjoy it so much. Looks even better when the creek isn't up to the door handles after the rain".

That mustang in the beginning is a 65. I have a 65 C code. The black honeycomb grille gives it away. Plus the chrome pieces behind both doors don't have the 3 long prongs that the 66 would have. 5 being the first digit in the vin indicates 1965. In 65 if you ordered the gt package it also came with the 5 round gauge cluster not the horizontal gauge cluster he's referencing. The original 5 gauges have been swapped out for the ones that you see in the video though. They're newer and not stock.
@05gtdriver
@05gtdriver 6 жыл бұрын
Since it's a C code, it's a non-GT '65 as all GTs were A code cars from 1965-66. GT cars were dual exhaust cars, requiring a 4 barrel carb( A code 289 V8). Only engine option above it was the Hi-Po K code 289.

Everything I've ever saw or researched says that the GT option included 289 4bbl, dual exhaust, front disc brakes, uprated suspension, on '65 cars round dial gauges, fog lamps, badging & rocker stripes. Styled steel wheels were optional on GT as well as other V8 Mustangs. Hmmmm

Unfortunately, GT package wasn’t offered with a C code until 1967 (I owned one) it had to be at minimum, and A code (or even a few K codes) the fog lights and striping, and dual exhaust was most likely added by the owner. Very clean car, I love the torque thrust wheels and the patina of moss all over it. That alone would make for a sweet photo shoot. Love what you do, Tom! Enjoy this channel a lot!

So this guy puts a GT 500 convt away in a garage and doesn't even care about it enough to get a good car cover to protect it. He doesn't deserve such a nice car. He should just sell it to someone who will care for it, look at the condition of that 65 outside and look what it next to the 70 Shelby, junk and done crappy kyacks, sad.

Totally agree. It’s heartbreaking when an old car rots bc someone doesn’t know what they have - but when someone knows they have something of historic value and treats it like literal dirt- that’s truly sad.

You are entitled to YOUR opinion but as someone who has had her 69 CJ Stang since June of 1969 and the last time I drove it on the street was 1971 -- its the OWNER'S choice of what is done. I didn't bother covering mine for the first 30 years or so. I may die never having put it back on the street but that is strictly MY choice.

You're a DB! He's owned it for 45 years, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. If you listened, he said he had fixed it up and then his wife got ill. He's a real Man with his priorities straight. If you have a car that you have kept in great shape for 45 years, lets see it.

Absolutely 👏 awesome job . This needs a full time show on motortrend . Way better then chasing old cars , that only ever have a couple of cool cars in the show . And usually nine times out of 10, it’s two cars that are in the background, at the same auction or show he’s at, but they’re not the cars he’s debuting.

Wow!...That owner got a "Killer Deal" for $1,500.00 for a 70 Shelby GT500 Convertible! My father bought me a 66 Mustang Coupe 289 v8 2bbl with 3sp Auto Trans for $900.00 at a Car Auction back in the early 70's during my Senior year in High School! Then later I brought a 69 Mach 1 for $2,500.00 which was later Stolen by the Dealer! (That's a Story in it self!) So again that was a "Killer Deal" for $1,500.00!...God Bless!

Probably the coolest muscle car of the 69-70's, just didn't have the performance that other Shelby's had. One other car of the same year would be the 70 Cyclone GT. Just watched a youtube video showing the detail that went into Shelby production, when Shelby introduced the 68 Shelby 500 KR. Little things like upgraded torsion bar brackets, additional radial arm nuts, AC hose bushings, it's own AC compressor, and lots of stuff the average guy wouldn't be aware of. IMHO, the 69-70 Shelby is the best looking Shelby of all the Shelby Mustangs to date.

If it’s a 65 it is extremely rare because the 3 speed auto was not supposed to come out till 66, but a ford manufacturer plant made a mistake by making about 450-500 with the new auto a few months earlier then ford intended, anyway its more then likely a 66

The High School I went to (North Farmington High in Farmington Hills,Michigan) had a 69 GT 5oo convertible that Ford donated to the auto shop with only 100 miles only condition was it could never be sold or licensed and destroyed crushed if the school ever needed to get rid of. Sadly the auto shop class closed up and the Shelby met its faith with a crusher.

FLASHTV The community college I went to had a yellow Beretta convertible. Black top, black interior. Donated by GM, same rules crush and destroy. While it wasn't a Shelby. It was 1 of 4 or 5 in existence 90 Indy pace car convertibles. I say that because all of the known ones had grey interior. There's one in a museum and that's it. It had yellow inserts in the seats, yellow reflectors installed into the regular rear panel, a flimsy roll hoop yellow z26 wheels. A GM exec had said he thought there were 3, there were 3 at the race. This one was not an actual pace car from the race no light bar, no engine mods. They weren't structurally sound enough to sell. So all of the ones sold to the public were hardtop Berettas with paint, stickers, seat inserts etc, maybe a sunroof.

I confirm this Shelby. I also attended North Farmington in the early 80's, and took auto shop. The car was gone by the time I was there, but parts were still around. I remember the tail lights hanging in a tool room, the the exhaust up in the loft. Great story!

I went there in 77 and it was still intact except missing Shelby emblems and rims. Mr Shear was a ass and he hated me cause I caught him in a lie in front of the whole class. Basically he went out of his way to make it hard for me to the point I quit going to class til the final exam and I aced the test, only person to get 100 on it and was really pissed to the point he said I must of cheated and made me retake another test 1 on 1 watching me like a hawk. What put him over the edge I was given a full scholarship to Chrysler's MoTec school in Livonia , which he fought and failed.
