A time travel to Volgograd at the time of the Soviet Union. In 1970, a group of former Wehrmacht soldiers who fought in Stalingrad in 1942/1943 return to the city, which was then called Stalingrad and became the scene of the most notorious battle in World War II. The Battle of Stalingrad is considered one of the turning points of the war. The surrender of the German 6th Army on February 2, 1943 demonstrated the world the possibility of defeating Hitler's Wehrmacht. But the result was devastating. Hundreds of thousands lost their lives. On the Soviet side, there were more than half a million dead, including numerous civilians. Of the nearly 100,000 Germans who became Soviet prisoners of war, only about 6,000 survivors returned to Germany by 1956. This private film footage shows some of the few German returnees. They lay a wreath at the Mother Homeland Memorial on Mamayev Hill in honor of the fallen Soviet soldiers. They then visit one of the sites of the battle, a fiercely contested factory at the time. By the veterans' looks it is evident: Those who survived the battle of Stalingrad were never to forget it.
