Most of this footage was recorded in 1970 & 1971. Homosexual aversion therapy, historically referred to as conversion therapy or reparative therapy, was a set of practices used in an attempt to change an individual's sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual.
The methods used in aversion therapy often included negative conditioning techniques. Patients were shown images of homosexual acts followed by the administration of electric shocks. Patients were given drugs that caused nausea while being exposed to homoerotic stimuli, with the aim of associating those stimuli with unpleasant sensations.
The consensus among health and psychological professionals is that aversion therapy was not only unsuccessful in changing an individual's sexual orientation but also harmful. Major psychological and medical organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization, have condemned these practices. Studies and reports have documented the significant mental health issues resulting from such therapies, including anxiety, depression, and suicidal behavior.
As a result of these issues, many countries and regions banned conversion therapy practices, especially for minors. These bans are supported by evidence highlighting the ineffectiveness of the therapy and its potential for causing long-term psychological damage.
Don Kilhefner, one of the speakers in this film, was an influential figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, particularly known for his activism and community organizing work. He co-founded several important organizations and initiatives that have played pivotal roles in advocating for and supporting LGBTQ+ individuals.
Kilhefner was a co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of the Gay Liberation Front, one of the earliest gay rights organizations. The GLF was instrumental in the early stages of the gay rights movement, emphasizing a radical approach to gay liberation.
Kilhefner's work focused on the intersection of personal identity and community support, advocating for self-acceptance among LGBTQ+ individuals while fostering a sense of community through shared experiences. His efforts significantly contributed to the advancement of gay rights, the improvement of health and social services for LGBTQ+ people, and the promotion of a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ issues.
Virginia Hoeffding, also in this film, was a significant figure in the early gay rights movement. She co-founded the Gay Women's Service Center (GWSC) in 1971. The GWSC holds the distinction of being the first organization in the U.S. incorporated as a social service agency exclusively for lesbians. It was also notable for having the first telephone listing in Los Angeles to ever contain the word "gay."
Ellen Broidy, also in this film, was an important figure in the history of gay rights activism best known for her role in organizing the first LGBTQ+ Pride march. Ellen Broidy's work helped set the stage for the subsequent decades of activism and the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Her contributions organizing the first Pride march have had a lasting impact on LGBTQ+ community visibility and advocacy.
Jon Platania, a speaker in the film, entered gay liberation in the early 1970s when he joined the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front, the pioneering gay activist group founded after the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion. He was instrumental in organizing and managing the Gay Liberation Front’s “Liberation Houses.”
He was entrapped by an undercover police officer and was charged with lewd and dissolute conduct. Instead of pleading guilty and paying $150, Jon plead not guilty even though a conviction would have made him a sex offender for the rest of his life.

He said “I was so naive. I didn't fully grasp the gravity of what I was doing. I just knew I had to defend myself. So I went to the legal law bookstore and I got a copy of the California criminal code. I was a systems analyst and a city planner, and I thought, well I can do this. I read everything I could. I subpoenaed every member of the police commission including the head of the vice squad & the chief of police. I had them all by their own cajones and they couldn't go anywhere unless they could squash their subpoenas because they had to be in town if I wanted to call them to court, which I did.
Judge Nebron was helpful to me. The judge asked me why I was doing this and I said 'Your Honor, if you really don't understand why, that's the problem. I'm not fighting for just my life. This happens 10,000 times every year, at least, in this park. That's how many lives are ruined just in this park.’ I then asked the arresting Officer Breem and said, 'Tell me, did you voluntarily enter this work with the police department? How does your wife feel about you hanging out in these different men's rooms, picking up faggots?' He wanted to kill me so bad. I walked out a famous fagot but I won my case.”

It is bad. Even more, it is a sin and an abomination to God. Leviticus 18:22 - Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination. Leviticus 20:13 - If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them.

@@jeffhensley9988 Your words show how similar to modern day jihadists those who abide by these statements of over two thousand years ago are as dangerous and criminal as the Muslim radicals themselves! No wonder that nutjob killed that poor girl on the parade and wounded so many, that being the second time he had tried to kill people in a parade and mysteriously set free ten years later on the exact same day of the parade ... by the same politicians and authorities who believe in these dangerous, reactionary values Muslim countries have turned into law by their cruel Sharia punishments. I Googled Don Kilhefner from this film and he is now a.psychologist in LA and of course a long time LGBTQ+ activist to this day. I noted that he was born in Ephrata, PA which is in Lancaster County. This is a very comservative area as there are many Amish/Mennonite communities there. It is where I myself grew up. I know somewhat of a young, gay man's experience because I had more than one in my life as friends. I am grateful that we have progressed on this since this time period.

Since I was a kid in the 80's, I knew I was "different." And I also felt no one would understand. I befriended a school administrator who I thought liked me and wanted to help me as a student. But he eventually SA'd me. I never told anyone it happened. A year later a rumor went around school that I was gay, and nearly all my straight friends abandoned me that school year and part into the next. I just continued to emotionally close off everyone. One friend continued to pick me up and socially re-engage me. Then, out of the blue in '94, he took his life. I never fully recovered from that. I came out in 1999 in my early 20s, and befriended many people who endured the Stonewall era, 70s and 80s. But I never found the happiness I was hoping to find. I found many of the same hierarchical structures in mainstream society were being propagated in the gay community. The same social stereotypes, being a mixed gay man. The one person who gave me the space to be myself was a white law enforcement officer. Sadly, he died in his sleep 14 years ago. Shortly afterward I left "the life" and closed off entirely. Although I thankfully maintained my health, I no longer date or engage in intimate activities with anyone. And I've come to terms, now in my mid 40s, I'll be alone until I die. And I'm okay with it. Everytime real love got close, it vanished like smoke. Not everyone is destined to find love and clearly I am one of those people.

I truly am sorry to read of your negative experiences. Being in your 40s certainly doesn't preclude you from seeking a relationship, 'though I appreciate your life to date has not been encouraging in this direction. Please don't isolate yourself. Socialise with an open mind, with the aim of making some purely platonic friends. But what do you think about now how the media an whatnot seems to be pushing the young gay community to change their sex? Especially when they haven’t perfected it, I mean anybody can do what they want. But it seems to me their using the same old divide an conquer strategy. Cuz two of my uncles, I would imagine we’re around your age and they were born it the late 1930’s and early 40’s and one was bi-sexual and the other was gay before they passed away thought all of this propaganda was to much. They thought that drag queens coming into elementary schools and dancing sexually was way to much. They would say things like why don’t they have counselors at school for kids to talk to if they weren’t sure about their sexuality and to let them know it was ok an introduced them to kids that were maybe already counseled an wouldn’t feel alone, just common sense stuff they would say like that. I was in a relationship with a woman for 5 years and I was miserable, I felt awful for pretending to love her. @@DrewRueDoo First, it's not about a "religion", it's about a "relationship" with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Secondly, there are no "rules". God gives us freedom of choice. He doesn't force anything on us. You can choose Jesus and spend eternity, forever, in Paradise, Heaven, "or" you can choose not to choose Jesus and spend ETERNITY in Hell. As I said, it's your decision, your choice. God made a choice, in his Love for you. He chose to give his only begotten son, Jesus, as a sacrifice, for "you". Jesus Shed his Blood, for "you". Jesus "died", for "you". God raised Jesus from the dead three days after burial, for "your justification". Every choice was made, for "you". I Pray that you will take just a couple of minutes and continue reading what I post here. I know that we don't know each other but I sincerely do care about you. I would like to see you in Heaven. Please keep reading:🙏🏻 Our Blessed Hope, our Savior Jesus Christ. Do you know him? Do "you", ("whoever" is reading this), know Jesus? Even more, are you "Saved"? If Jesus were to return today, "now", would you be ready? Are you ready? That is the one question that you, and everyone, better know the answer to, because that is the most important decision you will ever make. Jesus is the "ONLY WAY TO SALVATION". There is no other way, "none". This "life" that you are living now, is a "limited" existence. The life after this is "ETERNAL", which brings us to another question: "Where do you want to spend eternity?" Well, you have only "two" choices: either "HEAVEN" or "HELL"! Not everyone will go to Heaven and likewise not everyone will go to Hell. It's your choice! It's always been your choice. Have you ever wondered why we all don't go to Heaven? Well, it's because of just one thing. But that "one" thing "separates" us all from God, and that one thing, is "SIN"! We are all born into sin, everyone is, and the Bible says that the wages (penalty) of sin is "Death". You see, because of our sins, when we all die, we are all "eternally separated" from God. But you know what? God Loves you so much that he made a way for you, for all of us. The Bible also teaches us that even though the penalty (wages) for our sins is death, we can gain SALVATION (a GIFT FROM GOD) through his only begotten son, Jesus Christ. God made a way! He sacrificed his only son, for "you"! That's how much he Loves you. ROMANS 6:23 kjv For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Here's the GOOD NEWS, (THE GOSPEL) Jesus took your sins and paid your sin debt in full. He took all your sins, past, present and future, to the Cross, shed his Blood and literally DIED for your sins, was buried and then God raised him from the dead three days later. Anyone who believes in the finished work of Jesus Christ will be Saved. That's THE GOSPEL (which means GOOD NEWS). 1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-4 kjv 15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. He paid the price so you don't have to. Jesus is the ONLY ONE who could. He is the ONLY WAY. JOHN 14:6 kjv 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. God gives you, all of us, this "GIFT", because he Loves you. How much does God Love you? Well, let me ask you this: "Could you sacrifice your only child?" That is exactly what our Heavenly Father did. He gave (sacrificed) his only begotten son, Jesus, for "you", for the "WHOLE WORLD"! JOHN 3:16-18 kjv 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Please, don't let Gods "sacrifice" (for you) be in vain. Jesus "died" for you. Please "Live" (eternally) for him.

In the 1970s homosexuality was still a crime in Australia and the police would often do illegal raids on gay cruising sites and beat up the men that they encountered there before arresting them. One time in an Adelaide park a guy drowned when he was thrown into a river. Gay bashing was a popular sport among youth gangs and there were several murders in Sydney where young gay men were thrown from cliffs. Dark days... It's strange and encouraging how much the world has changed in my lifetime. Still got a long way to go tho'

This 1965 song "Let Me Be" by P. F. Sloan, I feel we all can relate too regardless of sex creed race or LGBTQ. "Let Me Be" P. F. Sloan Please don't mistake me or try to make me The shadow of anybody else I ain't the him or her you think I am I'm just trying hard to be myself Oh, society's goal is to be part of the whole That may sound good to you, not to me Let me be, let me be To think like I want to Let me be, let me be That's all I ask of you I am what I am and that's all I ever can be Don't try to plan me or understand me I can't stand to be understood I could never give in to or ever live up to Being like you think I should I've got some inner need which I'm tryin' to heed I can't take hand-me-down destiny Let me be, let me be To think like I want to Let me be, let me be That's all I ask of you I am what I am and that's all I ever can be Don't try to change me or rearrange me To satisfy the selfishness of you I'm not a piece of clay to mold to your moods each day And I'm not a pawn to be told how to move I'm sorry I'm not the fool you thought would play by your rules But to-each-his-own philosophy Let me be, let me be To think like I want to Let me be, let me be That's all I ask of you I am what I am and that's all I ever can be I said that's all I ever can be I said that's all I ever can be I said that's all I ever can be

I just want to say, with no hate in my heart, that people in the modern LGBTetc. community do not understand what these young people went through. They fought hard to be accepted so that the new generation could exist peacefully. That's where I get upset with the new trend of playing victim *when it's unwarranted.* These people fought hard for your rights. Respect them all. Peace and love man. No hate in me at all.

12:18 Mainly nowadays what he would say would be true due to the Supreme Court overruling of 53-3 senates in June 2015 during President Obama’s term in office. Which meaning that same-sex marriage would be legalized. But it does not mean there aren’t some people in this country who opposed the LGBTQ rights in the United States. There are some anti-LGBTQ laws in some states outside of the liberal cities such as Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and other states. There are some countries outside of the U.S who have anti-LGBTQ laws in public law and private law. Those countries, I would name are Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Somalia, Uganda, Ghana and Russian in an unbiased perspective and view. So there are still homophobia homophobic people in every country just like the United States and outside of the United States 🤫🫠

@@colbyboucher6391 Puberty blockers are not innocent or reversible like some would have you believe. They have lasting effects, and make fully transitioning later on more difficult (and dangerous) due to a lack in anatomical development, particularly in boys. If kids can't drink or get a tattoo, they're certainly not mature enough to take life-altering drugs like puberty blockers. I have no issues if an adult wants to make those decisions. But not kids. England recently just banned allowing minors under 18 to take them. Maybe the USA should take notice and follow the same sensible guidelines.
