After a night of violence in 1971, during which six people were killed in the area of Springfield Park which was just facing Ballymurphy in West Belfast, scores of Catholic and Protestant families left the last mixed street in the area.
In the optimism of the 1960s they had bought new homes in Springfield Park only to find themselves at the heart of a three-way battle when the Troubles broke out.
A MILLION BRICKS is the story of a scattered community, told by the people themselves and produced by FRANK MARTIN and SEAMUS KELTERS, who as children, lived in Springfield Park.
They were ordinary people who saw their hopes realised, then dashed within the space of a decade.
Where once stood a row of houses shared by Protestants and Catholics now stands Belfast’s biggest peace line, a wall of a million bricks separating them.
Here is no man’s land.
Here was home.

I lived at 16 Springfield park from 1962 until 1971. In 1971 my family immigrated to the USA and I have lived in Ohio ever since then. I have returned to Belfast many times since then. The years I lived there were the happiest years of my life. I am 70 years old now and I had the best friends I have ever had there. I will never forget Joe McAvoy and Phillip Fusco who lived in Springfield Park and Alan Barr who lived in Moyard Park. I have tried to find them many times but to no avail. I hope they have lived happy lives.

@@stuartbrown8259 The north of Ireland is not a country. It's part of the province of Ulster within the UK. It is not part of GB hence the name GB and Northern Ireland. There is no provision in the GFA for the north to EVER be a sovereign country. It will either remain within the UK under Westminister rule or be reunited with the rest of Ireland. The definition of a country is that it has its own sovereign government. Does the north have a sovereign government? NO!!! Thanks to the DUP it doesn't have any government. Now stop telling yourself lies.

A sad reminder of a place too nearby where growing up as a child with my best friend who was not of the same religious persuasion had to at another time move away. I had great memories of Horn Walk and latterly Lenadoon until not long after the infamous "Battle of Lenadoon", 9th July 1972. I was witness to it all unfolding, though never the significance. I watched from behind Army lines, lorries and crowds making their way down to were we living, a place we loved and "take over" our homes, which of course was less than the truth, but what did we know?

I think Canada and the USA have long been a place for Irish people to escape the unvbearable situation forced upon, both in the 1800s (Irish Famine) and the 1900s (The Troubles). Do you feel that you did the right thing for you and your family by leaving and going to Canada? I know that you don't know for sure how staying would have worked out but just wondered what you think.

The thing with the Parachute Regiment is it's soldiers are chosen for and indoctrinated in constant "controlled aggression". They are the tip of the spear and provide support to UK Special Forces. They are not suited to the role they were given in NI. I'm not saying that as an excuse for what happened over there by the way.

What they should have done was evacuated all civilians from the area and left it to the RA and Army to fight it out. Sadly many young fellas put on the front line in the british army tend to be of low emotional intelligence from a working class area in England and Scotland. This is why you had trigger happy immature soldiers shooting indiscriminately at innocent people.
