It is really gorgeous, the other model year mustangs look great too but the 71 just looks much more muscular and aggressive to me in my opinion

I think it stepped away from the previous model about the same as each new model did. In 69 Shelby had a similar front end shape. I had a beautiful 73 in the late 70's . I've got it back now with alot of work to do. If I only new then 🦧🤔👶

These are muscle mustangs, 71-73. This is my favorite body style. I have owned 3 so far. These were much faster than they look. The Boss 351 was a 13 second car off the showroom floor. For 1972 they offered the Boss motor in a detuned flavor called the 351 HO.

@Jeremy Thompson I think you're thinking of the Q code, which was the 351 CJ and was offered '72-'73...maybe '74 Torino's too...not sure. A good engine with 4 bolt mains. The '72 351 HO was the R code, a continuation of the Boss 351 with lower CR, and very few made as it was not widely advertised.

In 1974 I bought a 71 with the 302 C6 auto I fell in love with mine. It was a forest green with white interior.. Doug thorley 4 into 1header side pipes.

Back then my dad had a ‘71 red with black trim 351 Boss, drove it at 17 yrs old and for many years I thought that car was the best car ever, driving with Eagles “Hotel California” on 8track the memory just doesn’t go away.

My first car was almost exactly like this one - pewter with black strip kit except mine had the vermilion (red) interior and a quenched chambered 351C-4V engine. But with a hot cam, headers and a bigger carb, that 351C it would run! That old Mach 1 handled very well. The only negative was that the rear window was so flat, pollen and dust would settle on it requiring frequent washings, and looking through that window from the rear view mirror was like looking through a slit. Fortunately, the car had sport mirrors which I used frequently. I loved that car but sold it to my brother so I could afford college tuition. I hoped to replace it with a '70 Mach 1 which I eventually did in 1996 (and still own it today).

For me, personally, the 1971 -73 Mustangs, are one of the best looking cars of all time. I remember falling hopelessly in love with the (was it Daytona?) yellow Mach 1, featured in 'Gone in 60 Seconds' (the original version).

In 1971, I was kinda' a big shot around the burger joint cruise with my 1968 Camaro with a '67 425 hp Corvette motor 4 sp. 4.11 gear. The 12 bolt rear blew the spiders gears about once a week. One of these in Red showed up 429 SCJ, Auto, stall converter, 4:30 gears and Cam. I never raced it but was VERY concerned I might lose because of my traction issues. If I put the 10.50 slicks on, then it just blew rear ends even with traction aides. Later bought a 351 Cleveland Mach 1 and loved that car. Built the motor ran the crap out of it and never could hurt it. Been a Ford guy since except for 1 Aero Malibu in the 80's that was a quality nightmare.

I love this style. A friend of mine in the town I grew up in had a ‘73 I think it was. It was always rumored in HS it had nos but it didn’t. I remember racing him in 90 with my new ‘90 LX 5.0L. His Mach I had the 351 with the 4 spd? In the 1320 my LX would get him but as we stayed in it the 351 with those HUGE tennis ball sized intake ports would scream right by me. It was a site to see. He could really bang through the gears too. Normally I’d not be happy to see someone pass me in a race but as rhis was the MACH I it was for me, awesome. Old meets new. New meets old. Thanks youtube for letting us gear heads relive our past with these retro reviews.

That's the visual near-twin of my first car! The differences: according to the stripes on it, mine was a Mach-1, but the VIN showed an R (351 Boss), but none of that mattered, as it had been apparently wrecked and rebuilt several times before I got it. Mine was also a fairly bright silver paint with what appeared to be microsequins. Also, the large gauges in my instrument cluster were speedo and tachometer. My car's interior was black and red, which was way sexy, but my car did not have the fold-down rear seat. It was a roller, then: no engine, no trans, irregular maypop tires that wouldn't hold air -- and my parents spent $300 bucks they really didn't have to blow, to buy it for me, because I was so in love with that body style -- and they got the ideal color, to boot! Unlike those on the car in the video, my spoilers were more black-ish than black -- and my front bumper was either black or chrome or silver (I don't remember which). My hood didn't have the twist-locks like the one in this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kM1mktqS2pqRYYU.html), and the car in the video has a plainer interior. I suppose my list of preferred engines was common to any Ford-o-phile of that generation; in descending order of preference: (A) 427 SOHC, (B) 427 TP, (C) 427 MR, (D) 427 HR, (E) Boss 429 -- and the only reason I hoped for any of those was because my parents had found and bought for me the car for which I had dreamed since the first images of it were revealed to the public. Lower on my wish list were the following: (F) 429 SCJ, (G) 429CJ, (H) 351 Boss, (I) 351 HO and (J) 460, (K) 428 SCJ, (L) 428 CJ, (M) 406, (N) 410. What I got was a 400 from a large Ford passenger car (Thunderbird ?) that had been driven into a concrete embankment, and the FMX trans that went with it. For those unfamiliar, the 400 Ford is the engine no kid wanted in his Mustang: it's as big and heavy as a 460, but it has the worst of the Cleveland heads, and a 2V intake sized for the 351M. And mine had a powdered harmonic balancer. No, that's not "powdered" in the sense of "powdered connecting rods" used in the 4.6: it means the harmonic balancer had been shattered -- which put me looking for a replacement. It was a learning experience: they were as common as hen's teeth. The crank was also bent, but I didn't know that, and I spun the engine to 5600 and neutral-dropped it; my 1/4-mile times showed the engine was making about 66 horsepower, and that the neutral-drop launch didn't help, so I stopped doing that. The engine had a vacuum leak I could never find, let alone get rid of -- and despite that, it would load-up on fuel and drown itself at stoplights if I didn't occasionally rev it to clear the intake. And it loped like it had a camshaft the size of my leg in it, and it never got into double digits on fuel economy: a full tank was seldom good for more than 100 miles. I later learned I had a pinhole leak behind the straps that held in the tank; the gas leaked out and evaporated before it had time to dribble. The brakes came from a (1972 MY) 302 Maverick that had been crushed by a train: it stalled on the track, and my granny bailed out a long time before the train came, but she was afraid. In retrospect, I guess I can understand: about half a dozen of my kinsmen have died at RR grade crossings (in fairness, some of those were probably driving drunk, so ....) It's probably common knowledge now, but the Maverick brakes are swapped left-to-right from the Mustang. That was the only time the Maverick had ever not been perfectly reliable, which really sucked not just because of the loss of that car, but also because it ran like a scolded ape. I was able to salvage 2 of the rims and tires from the Maverick; they were nearly new, so they went on the front. I got a couple of HR78-15s for the rear, because they were available and affordable; with the F78s from the Maverick up front, the Mustang took on a welcomed-but-unintended racy rake. Despite the skinny and tall tires, my Mach-1 could out-corner pretty much any other vehicle on the road in the mid-1980s -- or, maybe I was just willing to get a little closer to the edge than the other kids and adults that challenged me. Most of the time, though, I did all that I was able to stretch my fuel when I was out in the Mustang -- but eventually, even that wasn't enough. The pinholes in the tank eventually got big enough I could see a drip when the car was parked, so I took it apart, intending a complete rebuild. The pumpkin held a 2.75:1 gear and an open differential, but that was okay with me. I got some 255/70R-15 and 235/60-15 Radial T/A tires for it, and I was looking for the MagStar wheels to mount them; I wanted the look of the Magstar, but I also wanted 15x8 and 15x10 wheels; I sold it all before I got the car back together. I learned to drive on a 1964.5 Mustang notchback that had the 260V8 and M3-on-the-floor transmission; I hated that my dad sold it, but I understand the economic reality. It was the opposite of the Mach-1: smooth as silk, silent as the Prius is rumored to be, thrifty and practical -- but it looked like what macho dudes in that day called "a girl's car." I wish now that I had better appreciated it; decades passed before I connected the sale of that car with the purchase of the Mach-1's shell. But putting the Mach-1 on the road was a curious sort of bonding experience for my dad and me: we didn't have a garage in which to work, and we spent countless hours lying in mud working underneath it (the boards we put down would flood), in one of the coldest Mississippi winters that I can recall. We were miserable; our tempers were short; I didn't know what I was doing, and I was learning much slower than my dad knew I should. And as bad as that car turned out to be -- from an economic perspective, it made no sense -- nobody driving a Rolls-Royce could have felt any more pride than what I felt when I was behind the wheel of it.

You mentioned 351M which is why I’m commenting. What do you know of it? Wikipedia and and google haven’t been ideal. The distant relative mentioned that’s what in it as the car’s second engine put way back before spending the better part of the last 3 decades sitting with occasional use.

Got a rust free 71 Mach 1 i picked up in 2005 from a guy who had pulled apart and in the garage, he had it on C/L for $750. I felt like a thief at the time cause he wife said either a new deck and Me or you move out with your car. He already improved the suspension and rebuilt the 302 4bbl, with a 4spd. I felt guilty, but gladly loaded it on the car trailer. This Summer I begin putting it together with my Grandsons upgrading it with a T5 I have. Talk about excited!

I had a '71 Mach1, Grabber Yellow with Black Interior, non-functional ram-air hood, M-code 351C 4-bbl and a C-6 transmission. No stripe kit, just the lettering. Best classic I ever had.

I built a 1971 Mustang convertible with basically a CJR heads and a top loader 4 speed and 9 inch rear end. It also had a functioning ram air option. It was pewter with black hood and black cloth top and a white interior with black carpet. Beautiful car. The story starts with a set of 429 CJR heads I bought for next to no money at an estate sale of a deceased Ford guy. I knew that the ports of the 429 CJR were a bit oversized for use on the street with the 429 short block so I decided to build a 460 short block. Gas had already gone to lower octane so I planned the engine to run with around 10.25 to 1 and bleed off some compression with a fairly hot cam. At worst I could always add some octane booster. A set of 1 and seven either headers into 3 inch exhaust all the way to the back handled exhaust. 4 wheel disc's off a Lincoln handled stopping. Somewhat. I anticipated a lot of torque but nowhere near what the engine produced. I'd replaced the little struts under the hood with a thick export brace tied into the shock towers along with a stout Monte Carlo bar and used sub frame connectors. Nevertheless within 1000 miles the car was beginning to twist and the gaps between the leading edge of the doors and fenders were becoming irregular. I was using a very lazy rear end a specially built locker and Moser axles with a 2.76 ratio. Nevertheless less hooking the car with street tires was an impossibility. Best just to ease it off the line till rolling then smoothly add throttle. It was possible to drive aw a y from a traffic light in 4th gear. Once rolling the car was remarkable. Acceleration was brutal and continuous up to around 6200 rpm. I had some interesting races with 440 Mopars various Cevys up to 454 Corvettes other Mustangs etc. And I did in fact race a Boss 351 Mustang which was no contest. One race on the 210 Freeway was with a 99 Z28 5 speed car which went to around 140 with the Mustang still pulling away. My speedo only went to 120 but the Z28 owner stated he just gave up at 140. Torque from what amounted to a CJR 460 had to have been in excess of 500 ft lbs. Sadly this was one engine I never dynoed so I have no idea of the hp but it had to have been north of 450 hp. Too bad the muscle and pony car Era ended before Ford used this combo or something similar in its Mustangs and Torinos.

I bought my 71 Mach 1 from my girlfriend in 1980 I was still in high school. I had a 351 with a 4-speed I really like to I went out and bought the louvers for the back and side windows. I lived at 8600 ft elevation in northern Arizona it was really a dependable car.

It is a very cool muscle car, right down to the paint. It's different looking, big, bold and unique. I've always loved the Mach 1 name and logo too. When I worked at a Ford dealer in 2004, they had the Mach 1 nameplate on the 40th anniversary Mustangs of that year and it always reminded me of this style of beautiful, 71 Mustang. 🐎

IMHO, it's the best Mustang ever designed. As a young kid just driving , I wanted one , but the insurance was so high , I ended up with a new 1972 Comet GT, 302 with a C4, on the floor. We cammed it with a Crower cam , similar to a Boss 302 in duration but a little less lift. Milled heads,ported & polished, triple cut valves, Edelbrock Torquer SP HR , & a 600 Holley , vacuum pumper, & a 3000 stall & I was eating up BB Camaros, Firbirds , & 442s. That 3:80 posi sure could dig off the line. Headers , & dual exhaust helped too. A trans cooler & a Allison electronic ignition, with an Accel Super coil , with an early MSD-2 , & it screemed bloody murder. On the street , the only car I lost to was a Boss 351, slightly modified. A 454, Nova w/ a 4 OTF , & a 340 Demon 6 pack , were no match. But it still wasn't the best car that Ford made at that time, a Mustang like this one. With a Boss 351, 351CJ, Boss or a SCJ 429, or even a 2 or 4 bbl. head 351, could keep the GM & CC boys on the edge of their seats.

Thank you guys for all of the info about the history of this iconic 71 mustang mach 1 that I thought was the best looking and sleek looking but misunderstood in the 70's everyone was referring to the old mustangs at the time my favorite was the 67 but then this came out, I can honestly say that I would have bought one of these if I had the money

My first car was a 71' MACH1 4spd, 351C 4v, grabber blue. I repainted it gun metal grey, with black rally stripes... I loved that car. Soooooo fast!!!! Now I have a 68 fastback.

We own a 1972 Mach 1, red on red, "R" engine code, 351c4v H O, top loader 4 speed with Hurst shifter, 3.91 locking rearend. It is I of 336 produced and we love it

the 71 Mach ! is an incredibly good looking car. When people say it's big I laugh. Perfect with a 429 CJ or a Boss 351.

I had a 1973 Mach 1 Fastback. I loved it. The rear window viewed through the rear view mirror was a slit! The front bucket seats were tall, and super comfortable. The rear seats, not so much.

Hi from the UK..... The 71 / 72 Mach 1's are by far my favourite...... Brings back memories of a local guy here who had a 351 Mach 1 in Yellow and me pressing my nose against the window of the school bus way back in the early 70's......

My husband's dad bought a 351 Cleveland 4 speed. In late 70 it went for 1700. Next to it was a t/a 340 six pack challenger. Your right My husband burnt a valve rebuilt it wow three fingers in Cleveland heads. Scheifer and Weber disc. F those don't diff big Mach 1s.

5:15 - very few stock muscle cars equiped with an automatic transmission would lay down 20ft of rubber when they upshift to 2nd gear. Was a great era to be a teenager....will never be repeated

I'm a 28 year old man and I own a 2017 Supercharged GT Mustang which is making 750HP I have made the car look sexier with after market body parts and I would not buy any other car besides a Mustang in the future Aggressive aggressive looks and big power nothing mare that I want from a car and this 71 Mustang in this video is no exception it's a beauty on four wheels.

I have a 351 4spd car that I've retrofitted a built 460 4spd an I love it. Fast fun. The most structurly sound mustang the Ford ever made.

I love these 72 73 mustangs.. As a kid I alwais turned my head 180 * for those longnose car..i thought this was the fastest of all cars.. Now I own a 73 Grande coupe.. 302. Named Arnold.. 😂 👍

It’s funny, as a teenager, I had a 66 and everyone loved the first gen and most everyone hated the 71-73 so I jumped on the bandwagon. But, I saw a Steven Segal movie where he had a tricked out black fast back and fell in love with the car. I would totally rock one!

I have had mine for 20 years. rebuilding it now as a close to frame off restoration. new interioer. rebuilt 351 cleveland with cowel induction. trans rebuilt, new suspension all way around. added positraction. has automatic matching numbers drive train. ready to drive my stang. nothing like it.

One of my all all time favorite cars, especially with the chrome bumper over the body colored bumper. I had a '72 red Mach I 351c that I sold for a song around 1990. I'll always regret that.

Love this Mustang! However, I felt that this style needed a more aggressive muscle car appearance and I accomplished this myself with a few modifications. I purchased a 1971 Mustang sportsroof (fastback) way back in 1978 and I still own it today. I designed a higher stance by lifting the rear and front of my Mustang and I put large 28 inch diameter wide tires (P275 60R15) on the rear and I added SS Cragar rims. I installed a functional front facing 60's corvette hood scoop onto the non-ram air style hood to give a high hood muscle appearance, limited the length of the side stripes towards the rear of the car to only slightly past the doors and I removed the radio antenna. I also painted the front grill black and custom installed earlier year Mustang fog lights. I painted my Mustang red with black rocker panels and a black center hood and scoop. I built a 347 stroker from my 302 block, producing 420 hp and 430 lb.ft. of torque, installed a 3,000 rpm stall torque converter and a 3.55 posi rear end. I can easily burn rubber from 0 to 40 mph. My 0 to 60mph is 5.3 sec. and my quarter mile is 13.00 sec. I know have a one-of-kind Mustang. I turn heads everywhere I go and everyone feels that my Mustang looks even better than the original. Wish I could show you a photo here. Love it!

I like it! But I wonder if the 351 Cleveland car would be better to drive, with a little less weight up front? I like '71-73 Mustangs and I don't really think they got their due. The Clevelend engine is really underrated too.

When I grew up we were a car family. We disregarded cars after 1972 or so. Now the front of every SUV looks like a Storm Trooper helmet. Now I like the character of the early seventies cars.

I owned that car but with the 351 Cleveland. I added a Holly 4 barrel carb, Mikey Thompson 50s and Gabriel struts. It was a beast.

I think your theory on why the 71 Boss 351 was a Little quicker down the 1320 is correct. Also to be noted the Boss 351 is a small block with an aluminum intake.Whereas the Ford bean counters only allowed cast iron intakes on the Big block 429 SCJ. Together causing almost 200 lbs more dead weight in the front end . Which was terrific for doing huge smokey burn outs..

Gorgeous car. I think people need to stop comparing it to previous Mustangs in the same way the 71'-72' Roadrunner was its own special one of a kind brand. 71 was a transformative year in the US car world.

I had a 72 mach 1 Q code 351 cu in same color interior Gold outside. It was not stock when i got it and it would haul.Sold it to a dude in OK city and have cried since.

The '71-'73 Mustang "sportsroof" models are my favorite Mustangs of all time, especially the Mach 1 models, WITHOUT that HIDEOUS spoiler on the trunk lid. With the exception of the Pontiac Trans Am, I am not a fan of spoilers on cars. Yes the '71-'73 Mustangs were big, but so were Roadrunners, Super Bees, and Chargers. That rear roofline was just awesome. The first time I remember seeing one was in the James Bond move Diamonds are Forever, at around 13 years old, and immediately fell in love with it. I wanted one in the worst way. Sadly I was never able to get one. While they may not have sold that well new, they quickly appreciated in value. I couldn't begin to afford a nice one now, and at 63, I don't need a project car. I also love those 15" wheels. Most of these wonderful cars have been totally ruined with huge GHETTO PIMPMOBILE REEHUUMS.

I still have one Its a 1972 351C CJ Q coded. C-6 auto Trans Mach 1 with ram air This is a Mach-1 T-5 I bought this Mach 1 through the German Ford Dealers back in 1972 when Station there in the military. So I have had it now for about 47 years. I 100% restored the car in 2011. The car still looks brand new for I keep it in side and covered up.

My Dad had a '71 Mach1 with a 351 Cleveland, ram air, 4 speed Hurst. He smoked everything. His was Gold. The Magnum 500 wheels were great!
