The storyteller is Jon Platania who entered gay liberation in the early 1970s when he joined the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front. He was instrumental in organizing and managing the Gay Liberation Front’s “Liberation Houses.” These houses were spread throughout tLA and were the nation's first facilities for homeless gay adults and youth. He is now a Jungian Depth Psychologist in Berkeley, California.
He was entrapped by an undercover police officer and was charged with lewd and dissolute conduct. Instead of pleading guilty and paying $150, Jon plead not guilty even though a conviction would make him a sex offender for the rest of his life.
He is quoted as saying “I was so naive. I didn't fully grasp the gravity of what I was doing. When people are cast into a heroic moment, and if it's a truly heroic moment, they just step into it-I knew I had to defend myself. So I went to the legal law bookstore downtown near the courthouse and I got a copy of California Legal Procedure and the criminal code.
At that time, I was a systems analyst and a city planner, and I thought, well if I can do that, I can do this. I read everything I could. I subpoenaed every member of the police commission. I subpoenaed the head of the vice squad. I subpoenaed the chief of police. I had them all by their own cajones, and they couldn't go anywhere unless they could squash their subpoenas because they had to be in town if I wanted to call them to court, which I did.
Judge Nebron was helpful to me. He certainly didn't give me the victory, I did that. He asked me why I was doing this and I said 'Your Honor, if you really don't understand why, that's the problem. My life-I'm not fighting for just my life. This happens 10,000 times every year, at least.’ I then asked the arresting Officer Breem and said, 'Tell me, did you voluntarily enter this work with the police department?'
'Well, yes, of course, I did.'
'So, you went to the police academy?'
'Yes, I went to the police academy.'
'I assumed that at some point along the way, you were given a choice about where you want to work, and you chose the vice squad?'
'Objection, Your Honor. Objection.'
The judge overruled his objection.
'Yes, I did. I chose the vice squad.'
'Well, that's a fascinating choice.'
'Are you married?'
'I object.'
'This is to the point, Your Honor.'
'If I may, children?
'Yes.'
'Well, tell me, Officer Breem, how does your wife feel about you hanging out in these different men's rooms, picking up faggots?' He wanted to kill me so bad. I walked in as a city planner, and I walked out a famous fagot. I won my case.”
In the early 1970s, the relationship between the gay community and mainstream American society was complex and often strained. The concept of "coming out" - publicly acknowledging one's homosexuality - was still relatively new and far less common than it is today. Many gay individuals remained closeted due to societal pressure and the risk of discrimination. The number of openly gay individuals during this period was significantly lower compared to later decades.
Police raids on gay bars and other venues were common, and those arrested often faced brutal treatment and legal consequences merely for their sexual orientation.
In cities like New York and Los Angeles, there were burgeoning gay neighborhoods and some degree of community organization, which facilitated activism and provided some support networks for gay individuals. These cities became focal points for gay rights activism, particularly after Stonewall.
Despite the presence of these communities, discrimination in housing, employment, and other areas of public life remained pervasive. Gay bars and clubs, often the only safe havens for the community, frequently operated under the threat of police action.
Mainstream American society in the early 1970s generally held conservative views about sexuality, and homosexuality was often viewed as immoral or pathological. The American Psychiatric Association did not remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders until 1973, reflecting broader societal prejudices.
The media portrayal of gay individuals was also typically negative or stereotyped, which contributed to widespread misunderstanding and prejudice.
The early 1970s were a period of crucial conflict and change, setting the stage for the decades of activism that would follow. The gay community's resilience in the face of widespread societal and institutional opposition laid the groundwork for the significant civil rights advancements that would be achieved in later years.

Meanwhile, there was a man stealing an old woman's purse one block down. After she got patched up at the hospital, the police told her they were sorry but didn't have the man hours to investigate the crime and wished her good luck replacing all the cash & vital papers in purse and good luck having enough food to eat until payday.

I was young and really aware of myself, men like this man were incredibly hot to me. I couldn’t wait to become 21 so I could meet these hot sexy intelligent hippy type men. Still today hairy men get my motor running. 🥵😂 Unfortunately it would be some years before I turned 21 and the world was well in the AIDS epidemic. We gay kids growing up in the 70’s and 80’s really had a horrible time as well. We were able to be a little comfortable with ourselves due to people like this and the liberation but on the other hand we didn’t have the opportunity to discover ourselves and grow like our counterparts because being gay was still rough, especially in the Midwest, then add the epidemic. I was always out even my freshman year in high school but never truly been with a beloved until I was in my thirties. I wish George Michael could have defended himself better, what a devastating way in his position to be outed. RIP🕊️ Thank you David, this took me back to my roots although I was a bit young but definitely aware . It was quite cathartic.❤

My Dad was a bigote, he didn't like the LGBT and was racist too. We argued about it a lot when I was a teen. At times these fights were heated and ugly, but amazingly my Dad started to question some of his prejudices. He slowly became more accepting and his bigoted ideologies just didn't seem important anymore. Dad was never completely comfortable with gay men but he did try to be as open minded as possible. He wasn't perfect he made mistakes but he really tried to overcome his prejudice!

Let’s suppose this was a female police officer, pretending to be an average but decent looking woman in the park And she invited I heterosexual man to sit down and talk to her. And make sense that she wants to go to his place for sexual fun. Would that have been acceptable?

Yes it would’ve been because at that time homosexuality was a criminal offence. He argued police entrapment for his defence, not that what he was doing was lawful. I think cases like this highlighted the injustices of such laws and helped paved the way for decriminalisation, and eventually legalisation of homosexuality.

People that go cottaging make me puke !! I was at a beauty spot with my 3 year old son when 4 men stumbled out of the bushes completely naked . And didn't have the decency to cover their privates . They nust continued to giggle and talk amongst themselves . Luckly there was a lake near by and when my son asked why they had no clothes on and it wasnt a hot day and thats "rude" as he put it . I told him that one of the men must have fallen in the lake and the other men had to rescue him and their clothes were hanging on a bush drying and tgey had to wait for them to dry before they could drive home infront of all thise people on the roads (it was a very rural area where we were) It was in the mid 90s so i didn't have a mobile phone to call the police or even take a photo of their faces (or their bits) 10 years later they completly closed the carpark area to the beauty spot by filling it with rubbke and putting massive bolders there. Its still on those disgusting dogging sites as there are signs warning about the penalty if you are caught doing anything there and for family's to watch out because they have had a problem with men flashing to kids and lone females .gives decent gay men a bad reputation .tbey could have traumatized my son for lice . HAVEN'T THEY GOT A HOME TO HAVE SEX IN OR GET A HOTEL ROOM . ITS VILE 😮

1 Timothy 2:12: I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. Exodus 21:7-11 7 “If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do. 8 If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself,[b] he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. 9 If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. 10 If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights. 11 If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.
