The story today is RUST! It'll be fine though. I gotta get this engine out of the bike and onto the bench for a teardown! I'm glad you're here. Grab your favorite liquid snack and join me.

I owned two Honda 350s in the 70s. One stock, one chopped. Had a blast with them and they really were hard to kill.

My first bike was a CB250K, back in 1980 I think. The engine screws are JIS, not Phillips which is why your Phillips screwdrivers don't fit properly. It's worth investing in JIS screwdrivers if you want to work on Japanese bikes of this era but I took all the screws out of mine and replaced them with Allen bolts. Penetrating oil is better than WD40 for freeing rusty nuts and bolts. To free the pistons, remove the spark plugs and pour some diesel in and leave it to soak. Good luck on the build

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I def need to get a set of JIS screwdrivers.

Back in the day i replaced the JIS screws for a set of hex head bolts on my CB250 K4, dealers used to sell sets of bolts for Hondas. no more problems with damaged cross heads

I had a 250 version in the early 80s when I was one of Maggie's millions. £45 got me a complete bike covered in a mixture of brick dust and flour. Stripped it and rebuilt it and put over 50k miles on it. Went well for a 250 and lasted better than the later G5, CJ 250 and quicker than the even later fat dream and wet dream. Still got some in the shed 'cos here in the UK in the mid 80s you could pull 'em out of people's gardens: "Don't want nothin' for it mate. Take the bl**dy thing away'. The 350 version got banned from classic racing 'cos you could take a freebie bike and with a bit of work, it would beat expensive Aermacchis and things.

@@JMCAero I like the MAC JIC screwdrivers. Also an impact driver will save you many headaches.

You can actually adjust the rear brakes by hand easily. Just push forward on the arm (against the spring pressure) and tighten the adjusting nut by hand as necessary. No wing nut needed.
@JMCAero4 ай бұрын
That's a great point, thanks for the input! I did just that to remove the adjuster and it came off by hand, no problem. I plan to use this bike kinda like a dual sport and those winged adjusters sure do make it easy to adjust when the actuator gets nasty but I'll keep it the way it is for now. I think you're right.

To try to break the pistons loose try transmission fluid and acetone leave it in for a week and then try it
@JMCAero4 ай бұрын
That's great advice, I appreciate your input. I would have done that but I always start with Marvel and see what the level looks like after about 24 hours. If even one of the cylinders has lost fluid around the rings, I switch to atf/ace. Unfortunately in this case, the level didn't drop a bit and in my experience, heat and beat is the only way she's gonna come around if its that stuck.

@@JMCAero penetrating oil
@Imarida24 ай бұрын
Penetrating oil works 10x's better than WD40. Every tool chest or garage should have a can of penetrating oil.
@JMCAero4 ай бұрын
WD40 certainly isn't the best penetrant out there. Got any good recommendations?
@laverdas204 ай бұрын
I use E85 PETROL AND 2 STROKES OIL . You mix and let 3 or 4 hours. It's not expensive and it's works very well. Best from France !@@JMCAero
