The Wildcats and the Bruins squared off for the 1971 NCAA Basketball Championship inside the Astrodome in Houston. This film offers a good, concise look back at game footage accompanied by the UCLA radio broadcast. Produced by Sports Films & Talents Inc.

Thanks for sharing the footage and play by play. I had forgotten about UCLA holding the ball.. UCLA appeared a bit baffled by the zone despite having more talent. I enjoy your channel. This was a labor of love.

College hoops seemed so much bigger then. I was just a kid then, but I could tell you at least 7 of the players on the floor as soon as the video started. I hardly remember what team won March Madness last month.

I am the very same way. I used to listen to two or even three college games at once by flipping the radio dial around. I lived for the game. Today, it's just shoe company promotion. No loyalty by players. Ho hum.

Did you have any other UCLA radio or film from NCAA Final Fours? Such as 1969 Drake-UCLA? Or regular season UCLA-Notre Dame Jan. 23, 1971? Very nicely done.

Nothing as unique as this fusion of radio and film but I have posted plenty of UCLA material, including the official 1971 Final Four Film just the other day, as well as two long uploads of partial game broadcasts that serve as a chronicle of the 1980 Bruins tournament run. Also, there's lots of "Converse Basketball Year in Review" films on this channel that certainly include footage of UCLA championship game from the 60's and 70's. I hope that you get to check them out.

Too bad Nova's runner-up finish was forfeited due to NCAA violations. 😣😖

Very unfortunate but I suppose it would have been a much bigger mess if they had won the game and then later been stripped of the championship.

@@joetolstoy3573 Of course Wooden and UCLA were successfully covering up blatant violations by booster Sam Gilbert from 1967 through '75. Had the whole truth been known, Kansas would have been the only Final 4 team in '71 to not have forfeited -- assuming they were not up to something as well.

I hope they give it back since UCLA had Sam Gilbert.

@@brianarbenz1329 If that was decided like then there would literally be no championships in basketball or football during this era. Boosters were legendary in many schools, even larger than Gilbert was at UCLA in some cases. To be fair, the playing field was mostly level due to the "wink-wink" & "nod-nod" given by the NCAA.

Didn't Vilanova eventually have to forfeit their games because Howard Porter had signed a pro contract?

You can only measure against contemporaries. If you were great against the best teams you played, then you were great. Can't stand the stupid cross-generational crap. "Could Babe Ruth have even gotten a single off of Gerrit Cole". Those things are irrelevant and a waste of time.
@TheSmarq17

@@carseye1219 Exactly. Especially since most of those "some high school teams" are full of recruits and transfers. All of it very shady too. Not the same world now that they lived in then.

UCLA WON in 64 65 with no player over 6'5. Then they won with Alcindor. Then with Wickes and Rowe that were considered beatable. They won 2 more with 6'5 6'6 players dominating then Walton teams. Jabber led Bucks to title in 3rd year at 24. Walton led Blazers to 77 title at 24. With 2 rookies 2 2 year vets a 4th year and 5 year vet. Look up the blazers roster and only 2 were Allstars. The rest just smart white guys who knew how to play.

@@shawnyoung8752 Silly to bring race into it. Lionel Hollins (definitely All-Star caliber), Herm Gilliam, and Johnny Davis were significant contributors to that Blazer's title. Personally, I never conflate college hoops and the NBA. They are different worlds.
