Part two of a two part video series that will take you through installing a Gear Vendors aftermarket under/overdrive onto a 1971 Ford Torino. Part two involves wiring up the gear vendors unit, trouble shooting a very surprising wiring defect that had the project stalled and finally a demonstration of the gear vendors unit in action!

This Torino is a 351 cleveland car with a c4 automatic transmission and a 9 inch rear-end w/3.50 gears

Followed your install...because YT analytics brought me here. 😊 And because I'm thinking of doing the same upgrade. You did everything right with your install. Everyone assumes the vendor sold us a functioning unit. The days of quality control are long gone. Good catch on the swapped wires.

Yeah, that was a frustrating situation- really had me going in circles. I don’t know the manufacturing process on the controller- it’s a Holley MSD product- but if the connector is put on my hand I could imagine someone flipping the blue wire with the blue/white stripe wire. The white stripe(on the blue/white stripe wire) on the controller was very faded! So the stripe was difficult to see w/o really staring at it.

Don’t get me wrong, high performance modern cars/trucks make more horsepower than the old iron. The thing that really keeps the muscle car era stuff from competing is being saddled with 3 forward gears in the case of an automatic transmission (4 in a stick application). New cars and trucks have 6-10 forward gears=always in the power curve. That Cleveland big port should be lots of fun with what amounts to a 6 speed . Worth every penny for what you pick up . Great video. Very informative.

It really makes the car a lot more flexible. The gear splitting is super cool, it now has a true passing gear in 2nd gear w/overdrive. The gear shifts are all close ratio too. Thank you!

I know this is old and you may not see it but I’ll ask anyway. Did the driveshaft angle change with the shorter driveshaft? And if so how did you adjust it back into correct geometry? Thanks

It did change the angle very slightly but it actually made the angle even more neutral than it was before. Thats a nice thing about installing one of these in a car with just one single driveshaft. If you install a Gear Vendors into a truck, driveshaft angle issues are more likely, especially if there are multiple driveshafts in the driveline to begin with.

How did you know your engine RPM without a tach fitted? Are you going to try to find a factory type tach and install it where that blanking plate currently is? Hope you can repeat your MPG test to see an improvement. Interesting video.

There are calculators that can calculate your RPM's for a given road speed- they are not perfect but they'll give you an idea within a 100 RPMs or so. I used to run a tach in the car, but after doing a refresh on the interior a few years back, I took the after market gauges out of it- I would love to find an OEM Ford ribbon tach for the blank spot in the cluster. Adding the Gear Vendors definitely has bumped up the MPG's as well as making the car a lot more flexible.

Its an extremely cool addition! In the case of my car, it's made it something you can take out on the highway and not have the motor howling just to keep up with traffic. What rear gears you got in your Gold/White 72?

Yeah, you could! It would be a kick ass addition for your 72. The gear vendors allows you to gear split too.

I have the same issue with the red light coming on..How did you fix the 2 blue wires that were crossed? Did you re pin it or just swap the wires to be connected at the proper connections

Once confirming that the wires were crossed on the module, I swapped the blue/blue-white wires on the wiring harness. i'm sure it could be re-pinned too!

Another question for you that you might be able to help me with. My Hall effect speedo sensor has three wires( Red Black and White) Would you think that the white would go seperately to my white signal wire from the speedo and the purple and green go to the remaining black and red?

Well the black and red wires go to the solenoid. .. The speed sensor that came in my kit just had 2 wires(green/purple). What vehicle are you putting your gear vendors onto?
