We're back with the second part of the service of this beautiful Omega Automatic from 1972 with the (in)famous 1020 movement. We'll discuss in a bit more detail a few aspects of the movement and also look at some of the weaker points that we need to consider during a service. And we'll be hunting Stingrays in Norway!

Very interesting video and it looks like a new watch and I learned about older Omega movements; 500 series good, 1000 series bad and 1020 series ok if you don't mind the small screws and a few bits of plastic (which are probably self-lubricating). Also, quartz watches are the work of the devil. Thanks for another great video, I look forward to the next. Hopefully there is one about the IWC 89 coming. ;-)

I have this movement in a 14k one piece case and bezel. The sliding and winding pinions were damaged, so I couldn't move the hands around to see if the day/date would change. Plus, it has that pain in the a_ _ two-piece stem so it would have been a pain to test. I ordered the parts I thought I needed, but after putting those few parts in, I put the watch back in the case, put the stem/crown in to test it, only to find the day of the week didn't change with the time (although you CAN change the day with the quick-set). Any ideas why the date would change with the time, but not the day? Thing is... it was a nightmare trying to get the bezel off (and then back on also) without damaging it. So since I didn't have the part, I decided to put it back together and not fix it. Maybe if I run across a parts watch some day, I'll go back in. But for now, it runs, keeps time, and the only issue is you have to manually change the day.

@@NumairAidroos Hello, I'm not entirely sure I understand what the problem is? You first serviced the watch but then had a dealer service it afterwards? And the stem is stuck while you were cleaning the dial after you got it back from the shop? It sounds like you need to take the dial off and check the keyless works, if there's a problem with operating the crown, that's where you will solve it.
@NumairAidroos
@NumairAidroos 2 жыл бұрын
@@VintageWatchServices Indeed, correct. I tried to service it by following your video. But I don't have swiss precision tools for the job. My tools were brutal so I dropped off the watch with a dealer. They serviced it right. But I had the urge to go back and clean the dial further, hence released thee crown in the time setting position. And pulled out the hands without syncing them. Anyway I can manage the hands, but I can't remove the date and day wheels without the tiny screw driver. How do I access the key lock system?

There is a little friction spring pressing on the seconds pinion to make the seconds pinion rotate smoothly, so your problem is likely that the spring is not exerting enough force.

Please share, how to fit a constellation type dial onto ETA 2836 movement ? Do I need the ring placed between the dial and the calendar ring for it to rotate freely ? Your movement doesn’t require that ring. However other movements do have it. It’s somewhat a high dial.?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices Жыл бұрын
Hello Ron, that's not necessarily all that straight forward. The dial feet need to fit the placement for the movement, and when a manufacturer makes a dial they base the position of the dial feet on which movement they will use. Thus if you really need/want to use a dial that was not made for the movement, you will have to remove the dial feet and place new ones. And for the ETA 2836 you'd probably need a spacer ring indeed, to make sure the date and weekday functions aren't squeezed on by the dial.

Looking at you pushing the cannon pinion onto the center wheel, I am confused as to what drives the center wheel. Typically, center wheel is the 2nd wheel, but the 2nd wheel in this watch is off the center, and I see no relation between the center wheel and the train of wheels. Can you explain?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your comment! In this family of movements, the power is transferred from the wheel of trains to the motion works by the so-called cannon pinion of third-wheel, which then drives the cannon pinion wheel. The actual cannon pinion is a tube that is pressed onto the cannon pinion wheel. There's quite a lot of detail about that from here on: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLWhfNd4tLLQZ3U.html

As always, great video. Although this caliber was quite criticized, it had many advantages over the 55X, 56X, 75X, as hacking seconds, high beat, a great efficiency in the winding system. Of course, the previous series (55X) was more refined in many ways. But if we compare the 1000 series to the movement of a competitor, like Rolex caliber 3085, 3085 had many more bugs at the beginning than the 1000 series, they solved them over the long run it had, in fact were solved in the first years, but it was way more unreliable -the first ones.

@@VintageWatchServices Hey thank you very much, completed my first service yesterday. On a 1020 btw. It’s crazy how small the screws and axles are. I used a binocular microscope for everything. Fell in love with inspecting those tiny parts. I’m fascinated how thin the pinion for the seconds hand is but also durable. (I kinda had luck not breaking it during cleaning, I clean manually with fluids and a small brush.) Do you just lubricate the axles(in example of a cogwheel) going into the sockets or also the surface where the axle begins, because this surface should also have contact to a plate or something. Thanks and greetings

Wow, that amplitude looks great. And lift angle is correct at the modern standard of 52. I bought my first vintage watch, an Omega 166.070, yesterday. Knowing its history of non-service, I was pleasantly surprised with the amplitude i got on my timegrapher. Until I looked up the lift angle, and set it to 49. Amplitude dropped 25 degrees. Still: straight lines and amplitude in the 200-240 range isn't that bad for a 1969 watch, though?

@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Carlos, thanks for watching and for your question! 9415 is a grease originally meant for high beat escapements (28800+), but nowadays many use it for any movement. I personally use 941 for lower beat movements and 9415 for high beat, but you can use 9415 for everything if you want.

I'm busy sorting out a Geneve for a friend of mine which has the 1030 movement with the built in secret compartment. Thank you Stian for the most comprehensive breakdown and assembly video of this movement, particularly the parts around the canon pinion and quick change yolk. I thought it was just me moaning about the screw sizes. One quick question - do I have to support the seconds wheel when installing the seconds hand, and if so what is the best way? The watch I'm working on was left to my friend by his father-in-laws family over 40 years ago. His father-in-law died a week before my friends wedding and the watch was gifted to him, so has a strong sentimental value. Saying that, it looks as though his kids used it for a hammer for a while. The setting lever was broken off where it meets the winding stem and the broken piece fouled the mechanism and took a divot out of the mainplate. The mainspring was broken and it hasn't seen a service in at least 40 years. Regardless, I'm quite nervous as it has big memories for the family and want to present it back in full working order. Your video has been a tremendous help and hopefully I won't find any more faulty pieces that are on the Omega 'Restricted supply' list.

Great video. In my business we talk about 'polymers' instead of "plastics". The word 'plastic' has a rather negative connotation, like being cheap and of inferior quality. As you probably know, there are many different polymers, each of them with specific characteristics, benefits and disadvantages, depending on the application. For some applications polymers can be far superior to metals. Being resistant to wear and tear and corrosion are just a few of those qualities. I am pretty sure the designers at Omega's have been very thoughtfull about which specific polymer to choose for that 'plastic' part in this watch.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Berre! And yes, the word "plastic" is intended to be a bit derogratory when used in the context of a watch... 😁 In general, plastic watch parts are made of delrin, which does the job but attests to less sophistication than a metal part.

After watching the 2 part video, I retrieved my Omega automatic day/date that was an engagement gift in 1974. It was put away because I got tired of returning it to service because the winding stem kept coming out. I can't adjust the time or the day and date. I waited until the watch showed the current time and have worn it all day to keep it wound automatically. It appears to keep good time after nearly 30 years in the box. Since it was purchased in 1974, I assume it is a 1000 series movement, likely manufactured in the early 70's. If the watchmaker couldn't get the stem to stay in after two trips to his shop, do you have a better suggestion? I never actually saw how you removed and reinstalled the stem, but I also didn't see you loosen a stem retaining screw. I'd like to wear this watch again because of its sentimental value and good looks. I really enjoyed watching the steady hands and clever dialog of a talented watchmaker. Thank you
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Jack, thanks for watching! If the stem comes out easily there are a few possible reasons, but most likely the setting lever nub is worn or the spring holding the setting lever down is not firm enough. It might also be that the stem is damaged. In any case these things should not be difficult to fix, but many watchmakers are not used to having to find old parts online. I'd suggest you google vintage watches in your area and choose the one with the best reviews.

well.. that leaves us talking about dynotron watches...🚨 great technique just between mechanical and quartz watches 😁

Pretty much! I've never worked on a dynotron but have tinkered a bit with the accutron. Very cool watches but I'm generally afraid of anything electric so I'll stick to the spring driven kind😉

The 1,000 series of movements do not win a beauty contest! But, will it be a good movement to have instead of the 526 given its issues with lacking of maintenance and plastic components that cheapen the perception of vintage Omega?

The 1020 movement series , somebody wrote about 45.000 were made?

Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel! The exact number of 1020 series made is difficult to ascertain precisely, but 45000 sounds like a reasonable assumption.

Why does omega plate their movements in copper? I mean it’s beautiful and very distinctive but there must be a practical reason for it
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices Жыл бұрын
It would mostly be for decoration, I believe. The movement bridges and plates are made of brass and by plating them you reduce oxidation. Why copper specifically I would not know, most likely simply to differentiate themselves.

Great video and just subscribed. You and the Nekkid Watchmaker have a wonderful sense of humor and narration which keeps it interesting and fun. As a home watchmaker hobbyist with a year of working experience, I watched this one carefully as I picked up a 1960 1002 OP with the butterfly 1560 cal, movement (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frSHbMibzM6Xc58.html) about six months ago and it needs a full service. I've been practicing on ETA calibers but must admit to having a bit of anxiety when working on vintage Rolex movements because if I break something, they're both expensive and hard to acquire parts especially for hobbyist without a Rolex parts account. I also appreciate your explanation on why the cal. 1560 was fitted with a balance spring protective bar. Richard ran into this issue on one that wasn't fitted with the protector bar kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qK-eiLmJx5fRfZs.html at 6:07.

Thanks for that! Somehow this message just popped up in my feed now, while it says it was posted 6 months ago... I also watched that Richard Perrett video and found it very interesting how the hairspring had cut that groove into the screw :)

There’s a tooth missing from the barrel (15:36)

Thanks for watching! You have sharp eyes :) It certainly looks like a tooth is missing in that light, but if you look a bit earlier in the video you see they're all there. One of the teeth have gotten a shock at some point and reflects the light slightly differently from the others, which makes it seem like it is missing. If it were however, that would have shown up in the running of the watch.

Hmmm... could you please make your position on quartz watches a little more clear? It wasn't obvious to me how you felt about it. LOL! How about Tuning Fork or Electric watches?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Clay, I don't actually hate quartz, I think they are pretty clever and undoubtedly better timekeepers than mechanical watches. They are however not interesting as machines. Same thing with tuning fork, electrical or for that sake smart watches. They can do more than mechanical watches can ever do, but there's nothing interesting about how they work. Mechanical watches are fascinating due to the ingenuity needed to make a few wheels and springs show time, date etc. It's of course also about the craftsmanship and tradition 😁

No one likes seeing plastic parts inside an expensive watch... But the 10xx were the first Omega ones to do so, the older ones are all metal, baby 😁

I prefer west end automatic because it has been best since ever I used it was every where people chose right watch. Omega shouldn’t support the China for hosting winter Olympic Games 2022, this would be big challenge to those democratic countries. Repeating errors of 2008 is not normal I don’t understand why do they have sponsored hence China is not respecting Rules and regulations of UNO.and not the human rights was ever been provoked problems of Whole Asian countries.still the South China Sea conflict have not been solve.
