I collect vintage Smiths watches. I have six or seven in total, Astrals, DeLuxes, a solid gold Everest, an Imperial and a pre-DeLuxe no name model.

Stian! Been worried about your absence😢 Thought that maybe you'd been kidnapped by North Korean agents, and shipped in a crate to PyongYang, there to service, under pain of death, the watches of that dastardly regime. Well, that seemed the most logical explanation, to me at least. Imagine my relief when I learnt you'd merely been on your jolly holidays😊

Glad to see you back up and ticking, Stian! Breguet numerals are also another nice legacy of A.L.B.! On the note of Frankenwatches, I’ve had to sharpen my eyes with vintage Seikos due to the volume of “mods” out there. I got suckered with one about a year ago and it really bummed me out. Thankfully my watchmaker was able to restore closer to original.

Thank you for explaining your view on replace versus re-use the mainspring. I am newer and more hobbyist currently and have seen both claims by various channels, most re-use for the history which seems incorrect, but your explanation on lower amplitude to improve longevity over time of the parts really helps.

I bought a brand new "Submariner" Rolex back in the mid-60s for diving. Years later the stem was in need of replacement so I took it to what thought was a reputable jeweler. I got the watch back weeks later, but upon checking it closely later, I found the second hand was not "sweeping" as it should if it was a genuine Rolex; instead it was jumping as a fake digital Rolex does. I'm contain either the jeweler, or whomever they sent it to exchanged the genuine Rolex action for a cheap knock-off digital!! I still have the box, the emblems, and the guarantee with the watch serial number, so I may yet see if I can trace where the real watch action went!!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 3 күн бұрын
That sounds bad but they didn't necessarily change the movement, that would be downright fraud. There is a little friction spring in these movements that makes the seconds hand move smoothly, and if this spring isn't secured properly, the hand will stutter and move in larger increments. Perhaps that's what happened? You should have the watch checked at your local watchmaker asap to make sure!

10 Sek. Unterschied am Tag? Da ist ja meine Timex noch genauer.

Rolexes are outstanding watches. Sure, overpriced, like Vespas, Harleys, Apples (;)) and most products of other world famous brands. Complaining about makes no sense at all.

Glad you're back, I particularly enjoyed this video, with you making the parts required for the fly back function. Lovely movement and a very smart watch. In the UK, it is now becoming dangerous to wear nice watches, although I suppose most robbers wouldn't know what a fine watch this is.

Very informative and helpful video as well as an important reminder about being careful when buying vintage watches. It was very helpful to see the various ways the watches were problematic with both obvious and subtle changes having been made. Thanks for the education! (Regarding the Felipe Rene watch, the dial said "Incabloc", but there was no Incabloc shock protection on the balance wheel pivot.) ~ ml
