A friend bought one of these in1971 in kit form here in the U.K.. Anything over 70 mph on a motorway and the doors started lifting away from the body which was a pain, but the straight 6 sounded glorious!

I drove one of these cars in 1972 at a TVR/Lotus dealer. Unbelievable acceleration, turned on a dime, but very primitive. Little cabin air flow, fiberglass showing here and there, I had a '68 Fiat 124, so buying it was out of the question, but what an awesome car!

The plug leads are leaking spark and there is gas all over the place that means it could catch fire 🔥 Did that help you understanding what I said the first time.??

This video brings back fond memories. I sold a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T with a 440 magnum to buy a new 1972 TVR Vixen 2500 (I regret selling the Charger to this day). I lived in Northern Virginia and the only east coast TVR dealer was Buzz Marcus in Pennsylvania. I drove up to PA and did a test drive. While it wasn't as fast as the Charger it could turn on a dime and had a MPG 3 times better than the Charger (9-12 MPG in traffic). I went home and sold the Charger and took the train back to the dealer to buy the car. [On the way back I stopped to pickup up a solider hitchhiking. Amazingly, it turned out that he was a friend, who just got back from Viet-Nam, and I hadn't seen in three years.] The TVR was a bronze color with a black sunroof. The funny thing about driving a TVR is you sit a little cockeyed in the seat with your feet slightly pointing towards the engine. The only problem I had with the car was when the throttle cable snapped in rush hour on I-95. I was close to home and managed to get it there by using the choke to give it gas. I sold it 4 years later for what I paid for it and also got another car as a bonus.

Fantastic TVR - I would have given anything to have been at that estate sale though. The guy obviously had a fantastic collection. Bunch of Interceptors, a Citroen CX... even a modern(ish) Peugeot 206! I wouldn't have thought anybody in the states wanted one of those. And all those Maseratis... my god. Best of luck with the TVR and the channel!

You probably already know this but I've had very good luck with Startron and Marvel mystery oil added to the fuel after a long time sitting. They're both really good at cleaning out the fuel system.

I remember these cars well from the 70's . I'm still surprised that other car companies have not followed suit by using more aluminum or fiberglass in the builds . It's such a smart idea .

when you walked past a maserati and numerous other lovely cars to get to a dismembered Bristol......i subscribed..... back in the 90's Bristol had a showroom at the beginning of Kensington High Street (very posh area) I used to drive by occasionally and remember seeing the owner sat in a deck chair worth £20 surrounded by hand built machinery costing a little more....... Eccentric Brand and must be supported..... I am English and respect what you are doing 100%, what draws you to British cars?

Those Standard Triumph engines are hard to kill. I've seen them fire right up after doing what you did after sitting for 40 years. If memory serves me, that straight 6 was originally built for fire brigade pumpers during the blitzkrieg!

I live in the uk wanted one of these but you just dont see them over here and if you do they cost a lot of bucks I now have a chemera 4ltr and I love it sound alone is worth the cost being a v8 which you yanks love and we do too These cars over here have taken a lot of flak but usually from those that have never had one They are great machines and you are very lucky to have owned one good luck my friend with getting it right it will serve you or the new owner well if looked after and they are fast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will always have electrical problems with cars made from fiberglass, even Corvettes can develop questionable grounds.

When I bought my MGB in '77 new, I think the TVRs there previously where gone I thought they were ok but the price was a bit much like the same as a new 911 about $13.000.00 as I recall the B was about 4 grand

Lovely to see - I had an even earler version with a 1600cc Ford Crossflow engine. Some said it was a better drive as the engine was lighter and did not make the Vixen oversteer .... but I dunno - never having driven the 2.5 Ltr model. I DID later get a TVR 3000 S Conveterable with the Ford 3 Ltr V6 ... much faster...but on the twistys I think the Vixen could have won!!

Two things I would do is fit an electronic ignition distributor (eradicates points ignition problems) and a spin on oil filter conversion to stop the low oil rattle on startup. Does it have overdrive?

Thomas Wykes, both are great ideas. I have another suggestion. I’ve always replaced the Lucas electrics with Bosch replacements. Cap, rotor, points, condenser, plugs and plug wires. Also a Bosch “blue coil”. Immediately gets rid the “Lucas/English electrics dependability problems. Also a fan of replacing all of the bulbs with Osram ones. Also Bosch relays when applicable. Enjoy that bad boy!

Though the 80's & early 90's I had 4 TVR's . 2 x 2500's like you have there & 2 Taimars. That straight 6 sounded like someone has done some mods on it . I would have liked the Alfa Romeo next to the Bristol :)

The Triumph six started life as a four cylinder and still has some of the things the four suffered from,such as weak thrust bearings. Grab the front pulley and see if you can move it back and forth. A worn thrust bearing makes it hard to change gear because the whole crank moves instead of the clutch disengaging. if it were my TVR (winners of this years lemans) i would be adding a 2.5 PI set up,modified to Megasquirt.

The Triumph engine was used because it already passed emissions for the TR6 which helped TVR get through US regulations, beyond that it was a poor choice being heavy and low powered and didn't even have the fuel injection available in the UK which made the engines a little more potent. Still a fantastic car though.

It wasn't really the fuel injection that made the UK cars "more potent" but the cam and compression. USA cars can easily attain 150 hp with just a cam and skimming the head for 9:1 compression. 150 hp in a 1600 lb car (Vixen) is pushing muscle car acceleration.

@@johncahill3644 My friend had a Triumph 2500 PI in the mid 70's which was the sedan with the TR6 fuel injected engine, they were pretty potent for the day, when he took his to Lucas in Birmingham to have the fuel injection set up, they said his was the most powerful one they'd ever seen, for some reason we didn't understand other than a PO had seemingly done some modifications including a free flowing exhaust. My understanding is that he problem for those considering removing the fuel injection on those cars, if it wasn't working, was that it was hard to get a carb setup that could work with the PI cam/head setup. The PI (Petrol injection - as it was called in the UK) presented a reliability issue Triumph didn't want to deal with in the US, as I believe the mechanical injection suffered issues in high temperatures, outside of the UK's moderate climate. The PI engines were phased out in the UK eventually being replaced by the 2500TC that ran twin SU carbs, because they couldn't get the PI to be reliable, a step back in terms of technology and a drop in HP which gave it the same output as the US carbed TR6 at around 106hp. I presume if Triumph could have go the same HP and torque at the same rpms as the PI, with carbs they would have, but while I know carbed engines can achieve 150hp I don't believe it would be as tractable and suitable for general road use as the PI engine was (especially in the big sedan vs the TR6) and perhaps also couldn't satisfy emissions requirements while doing so. Ultimately it was an old engine first used in 2000 form in 1960 and so without the fuel injection it was very heavy for the power it could produce and also likely not as fuel and emissions friendly. As stated before TVR used the engine because it was emissions compliant in the US already, but for performance and weight there were many better options available in European vehicles at the time, but of course most were not sold in the US and didn't have the needed emissions compliance.

Good way to burn the car to the ground. I hope you had a fire extinguisher handy. And, seriously, I don't understand how you can buy such an expensive car and not do some preventatives. New battery, oil, brake flush, change or at least check the coolant for contamination etc. Wow. You could have broken something hard to find and expensive to replace.

What on earth are those single-choke side-draught Webers? I think they must be really rare birds, I've never seen a single-choke performance Weber before. (Weber may have made odd little carbs for obscure Fiats or the like, I wouldn't know, but not the sort of thing you'd put on a TVR).

Two thoughts; first, modern fuel can be incompatible with old fuel systems, (thank you, EPA, for subsidising corn farmers), second, until you're sure of the brakes, treat an old car like a loaded gun; don't point it at anything you don't want to hit. (Clutches can stick and brakes not.) :-)*

I don't think they put electric fans on them from the factory. I had one, also a 72, and it had the old school belt driven fan. Also sounds like you got an exhaust manifold leak.

Dont ever use starting fluid . Use a little bit of gas . Works just as well and it wont dry up cylinders . It wont blow your head gasket r blow the heads off .

that i totally agree with the 2000 motor was sweet the 2.5 was a damn good boat anchor , all the triumph motors were poorly engineered, the crankshaft thrusts were a night mare , any tri motor first thing to do is get someone to push the clutch in , while you watch the crankshaft ,if it moves run as fast as you can away from it as it will cost a fortune to repair

In the video while reviewing the other cars, there was a 1985 Bitter, the second car after the Bristol. I believe that was my car owned in Vancouver Canada during the 1990s. It was sold in a Toronto classic car auction in 1999 or 2000. It was a 3.9 liter 5speed car. Does anyone know where it might have gone following this video?

The Vitesse is a 2-Litre (1998cc), and the TR6 is a 2.5-Litre (2498cc), but I prefer the 2-Litre, it has a better designed crankshaft and a much lighter flywheel and front pulley, therefore it revs much better. The Vitesse is a lighter car than the TR6, and has no trouble keeping up with a TR6...although the TR6 is more comfortable over long distances.
