Jack Nicklaus reminisces about the famous tee shot he hit on the par-3 17th hole at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links that all but clinched the 1972 U.S. Open title. Foe more about the U.S. Open Championship, visit www.usopen.com.

Almost nobody can hit a 1 iron period. To hit it in that wind with water behind the green and it’s the 17th hole of a major AND you hit the F’ing pin?! I’m dead. Instant legend.

Perfect swing there. In a “Feherty” interview, Tom Watson claims this was the greatest shot he ever saw. That’s saying something indeed!

What separates legends like Jack and Tiger from everyone else is their ability to make the "Magic" shots exactly when they need them the most to win Major tournaments. I think if Tiger and Jack both played the same Major in their primes it would be about who could physically play the longest because sudden death would keep going.

I hit a crisp towering 4 hybrid directly in line with the 17th pin at Pebble, and had visions of Jack's iconic 1 iron at 72 U.S. Open! It landed in the bunker. Too much backspin into the wind. Rats! I don't know if I'll ever get another chance at #17.

When the official channel of the USGA has a video dedicated to just one shot, you know that shot is unmatchable. Everybody playing behind him should have just walked straight to the parking lot and rolled out.

Didn't mention he had to make a midswing adjustment because of a gust. I remember him saying that clearly some time back. That alone makes this shot so excellent, but it was still partially luck.

Tiger is great, nobody has played golf better than him, but Jack is the greatest of All time, his majors records qualify him as such major wins, Jack 18, Tiger 15; Majors second place, Jack 19, Tiger 7; Majors third place Jack 7, Tiger 4. The majors define the GOAT, ask Michael Jordan if winning the Houston Open is comparable to the US Open. Or for that matter ask Tiger or Jack?

I agree with you, but to amplify on the major stats: In the 24 years from Jack’s 1st major win (1962) to his last major win (1986), 96 majors were played. - As you detailed, Jack finished in the Top 3 in 46 majors (48% of the 96 majors in that time period). - Jack finished in the Top 5 in 56 majors (58% of the 96 majors). - Jack finished in the Top 10 in 73 majors (76% of those 96 majors), which is 25 and 27 more Top 10 finishes than the golfers with the 2nd & 3rd most Top 10 finishes Sam Snead (48 Top 10’s) and Tom Watson (46 Top 10’s). In the 22 years from Tiger’s 1st major win (1997) to his last major win (2019), 88 majors were played. - As you detailed, Tiger finished in the Top 3 in 26 majors (30% of the 88 majors in that period). - Tiger finished in the Top 5 in 33 majors (38% of those 88 majors). - Tiger finished in the Top 10 in 41 majors (47% of those 88 majors). As can be seen from these stats, Jack Nicklaus was far more dominant than Tiger was in the 4 tournaments that count the most and define a golfer’s legacy. Greatness is not only defined by wins in the majors, but by consistency of excellence in majors during a career. As noted above, Jack Nicklaus was on the first page of the leaderboard in an astounding 76% of all majors played in the 24 years between his 1st and last major wins. Nobody in the history of the game comes remotely close to that unbelievable accomplishment, which is a feat that will never be approached.

Quite aware. like I say I think tigers already eclipsed jack, not to mention the years tiger has left. Tigers played the greatest golf we’ve ever seen in that 12 year span. Iconic moments, no one has influenced their sport more than woods has. Jack Nicklaus was an all time great with supreme talent, with the majors to back it up. But let's be honest, Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer of all time. As true as that may be it's impossible to make a fair comparison given the difference in equipment. While Tiger enjoys all the benefits of the modern age, Jack used old blades and persimmon woods most of his career. No computers or cell phones, no 460cc titanium drivers, no swing analyzers, etc.. Jack was the goat for his era.. Tiger is the goat today.

Can really count the European ones as not nearly as many wgc’s that count as European back. Also a lot harder for jack to play those tournaments given how harder it would have been to travel in the 60’s early 70’s
@alexanderjefferies77403 жыл бұрын
@@markdonnelly9117 Partly right, as his only European tour wins counted are 9 of his majors. But also because European tournaments at the time could not cover the expenses for travel to and from Europe. For instance, Jack received $18,000 for his 1963 Masters win. For comparison Bob Charles, the winner of the '63 Open Championship, only received £1,500. If that was how much the British Open gave out, it would be even less for other European tournaments.
