Throughout their long history, Ireland had never beaten the All Blacks and they failed to beat them until 2016. This 1973 ended in a draw and see how it all happened. Lansdowne Road was the venue that this match took place. This was before the tight 1973 Five Nations which all five European sides won. lol.

I remember being at that game I was 14 yrs old. I was able to get a "school boys ticket" from Elverys sports shop in Dublin. I was so lucky. I had a seat on the railing in the upper deck at the 1/2 way line. The only international Rugby game I have ever been to. So long ago now I can't even remember the price of the ticket.

One of the mysteries of International rugby is why it took so long for Ireland to beat the AB's (2016) If Barry McGann had landed that conversion it would have been in 1973.

love how the scrums formed in seconds, hookers had to hook and there was no faffing about with reset after reset. these are players you could relate to, ordinary everyday guys playing for the love of the jersey, not like the contract obsessed behemoths that play the game today
@tyonamin
@tyonamin 6 жыл бұрын
fiachraswaz That's just stupid. Crouch bind set and slightly older touch pause engage is all done to protect the front rowers' neck. Are you saying they should scrummage like in the old days just so games can resume faster? Front rows are going lower and lower to gain more driving force. They're bound to collapse more. And haha, I had to laugh at your last statement. They're professionals. Of course they'd want as much money as possible especially with their lives after their careers end looking so unstable.

It was the 1970s. Some didn't know about health and safety...the rest simply didn't care...however, more irritating yet for the spectator is that there is no CLOCK on the screen. Jesus.

Interesting to see how quickly scrums are formed and the ball fed in; forwards just got on with the game unlike today with the collapses. Also the lack of Jackaling for the ball by the opposition; immediate release by the tackled player seems to be the reason. If ball doesn't come out of the ruck it's a scrum.

Check out a 1969 match between Ebbw Vale and Maeteg on KZfaq and you will see the scrums that are a little similar to league. The game was very rough back then and a lot of people didn't know that. Since union took league ideas, tries were becoming a lot more difficult to score.

@peter walker... I take it you are relatively young. The answer to your comment is no, rugby attained perfection in those (or as you say "them" days) - if you truly love the game, do yourself a favour and check out the Barbarians versus New Zealand 1973 on You Tube - it has since become beyond awful and is no longer recognisable as what some of us consider to be real rugby.

The grounds are far better these days. No mud, .Balls are lighter and easier to handle and pass. All Blacks such as Sid Giong, Bruce Robertson , Grant Batty ,Bryan Williams, Ian Kirkpatrick and Peter Whiting would make the All Black team in 2020

Yeah every moron says the same thing. The likes of Grizz Wyllie were still kicking arse at club level 20 years later just before the game went professional. So tired of hearing the same weak argument from people who don't know what they are talking about.
