Great to see real scrums which were contests for the ball and not opportunities to try to con the ref into awarding a penalty. The players formed up quickly, without coaching from the ref.

How much better the scrums were in those days! Formed quickly. And the ball was heeled quickly. What a great half-back Syd was!

Rucking and mauling was just a free for all in those days. Nice to see the legend that is Danny Gerber. But the Boks are missing their magician , where's their number 10 Naas Botha?

the type of rugby i loved no high tackles no messing about with the scrums the british rugby have ruined the game and put players in danger with stupid changing of the rules

The days when to have a kick at goal you didn't have a kicking tee brought on but had to dig and make your own mound to kick from.....it was quite an art.

I recall playing in the 60's/70's as a Centre and Winger. The last thing you wanted to do was to go down on the ball in your 25 - all the opposition forwards rolled over you and rucked the shit out of you. We used to have competitions in the showers after the game to see who had the biggest tag marks! I recall that Dunedin Marist club were the worst "offenders" in the rucking game in our league. Some tough fellas there. If you're still around Bubbles, I remember you!

J.P.R. Williams disallowed try looked fine to me. You're not allowed to crawl which he didn't do. He wasn't properly tackled he just fell and slid and reached out which is perfectly legal. But the ref called it that's rugby for you. Not complaining it was a great game maybe Wales should have gone for a try at the end instead of kicking points. It's a shame Barry John didn't play in this game though he retired just a few weeks before

I was 16 when this game was played and watched live on TV on the Farm in North Otago. I love the Welsh except when they play the All Blacks! Syd Going died recently as did Bruce Robertson and JPR. Magic players thanks to you all

I never once saw the ball go past Burgess at 2nd5/8 in the AB backline. Those were the years of the boring kicking game, exemplified later with Grant Fox.

They say the modern game is faster and the players much fitter. But the fluidity of this game was unbelievable there was never a break in the play. No water or sports drinks, playing on a ploughed up field heavy woolen shirts. Would love to see this in hi def and colour it would be an amazing spectacle of rugby football.

So very different from today’s professional game. Can’t make my mind up which is the better sport. The amateur game was not about money & technical perfection. It had nothing to do with corporate sponsorship. Yet the excellence & speed of the professional game is more attractive to watch.
