How about the totally understated responses to kicking a goal compared to the overdone celebrations we see these days (i'm thinking bow & arrow as an example....)

I've been a Richmond supporter since 1967 and I was at the game with my wife I said to her 'I'd laugh if Richmond got up and won this' Not believing for a minute they would. I was there next week and saw Richmond win three flags.

Even as early as 1973 the game was being played at a pretty hectic pace, so the introduction of two field umpires was inevitable, but it still took another three complete seasons to do it. Field Umpires certainly earned their money around this time period.

It was just like any other game. I didn't think about that. I was used to watching games on Saturday afternoons, then going home to catch the replay in B&W on TV that evening. It was usually just the last quarter though.

Bob Skilton had a real bad attitude toward Williamson , so much so that he had trouble calling the decision correctly or even answering a question , gee bob you may have won 3 best and Brownlow medals on the field but you were a pain in the ass commentating this game! Mike should have told you were to go as it was clear that you were an umpires fanboy rather than tell it like it was. Full marks and praise to mike Williamson for keeping his cool and remaining professional throughout the call and to be frank! Nearly every call you pulled the umpires up on was on point ! Sad day in football when we lost you as a caller.

Collingwood again fails badly under the heat of an opposition second half comeback. Rose just did not have the team fit enough to run hard enough win big finals under intense pressure.

The Wollycobbles yet again. 22 up well into first quarter, which is 3 and two thirds goals, and almost totally against the run of the umpiring, .So its not just grand finals. Here its cannot buy a break in the finals.

@J G Any pansy or runt of the litter or string bean or encumbered nob can play soccer which is why its so agreeable to the broad millieu of humanity. And they play Aussie Rules extensively also in New South Wales but at sub-franchise level, although it does have a couple of AFL franchises. But it is bigger in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania.

Pies finished top in 73 and then out in straight sets. A great shame as the Grand Final brought the game into disrepute thanks to the pure thuggery of the select few. The game of football deserved better

Actually, the thuggery started started earlier in qualifying final, involving big John and Waite, mainly against small guys. The GF was revenge and Karma.

@@snoopy7690 Neil Balme broke David McKay's jaw and king hit David Dickson to the point of virtual unconsciousness in the 1972 grand final. He didn't need revenge or karma to do what he did.

It's 2023, and at last a Collingwood Premiership in September. I saw this game as a teenager, top deck in the Western (Ponsford) stand. First time I saw an MCG final. Very memorable: Graeme Jenkin ran out of legs as the game wore on - it was his last game for the 'Pies - he joined Essendon for 1974.

Cant believe the bias commentry in this game. I loved Bobby Skilton all my life till I listened to his commentating in this game. Very unprofessional. Pffft

Since 1960... Collingwood 2 premierships from 16 attempts. Hawthorn 13 premierships from 18 attempts... Not to mention pies pathetic capitulations such as this. I got off the loser train before 2003gf. Boys running out to get their butts kicked with two hardened "old boys", Freeborn and the D9, in the pavilion... THAT was it for me...Go Cats

@@markmooroolbark252 true... jumping off your chosen team because he got upset ? not the sort of guy you would want playing in your team anyways.... but then to brag about it? The Irony is that although the cats have won a fair few flags,they have lost more grand finals and they have lost so many prelims . I stuck with the Tigers ALL through the THREE decades of heartbreak (80s 90s 00s) and when WE (I say we because i stuck with them) finally came good in 2017 the feeeling was amazing.... This is Something this Broderick Wallis will NEVER know .The fact that he responded "happy loosing" in reply to your comment sums him up... A weak man who doesn't understand riding the ups and downs WITH your team is moe rewarding than jumping from wagon to wagon.
