Amazing to finally see video footage of players I have only read about or seen photos of. Been an amateur Aussie rules history geek for 45 years and this is a real step forward.

Excellent video Gazza. After a bit of research digging , a couple of things FWIW from the early couple of minutes. The 2 players at 0:32 are Dave McNamara (St.K - No.1) tossing the coin (Left) and on the Right is stand in Captain of Collingwood - Percy Rowe (No.23) , Collingwood's regular captain Harry Curtis was out injured. This is before the Round 3 , 1923 match at the Junction Oval (Sat 19 May , 1923) which was won by St.Kilda - 10.9.69 to 6.12.48. 1923 was the 1 and only year Dave McNamara captained St.Kilda when they wore the tri-panel jumper (1923 was incidentally the 1st season St.Kilda wore that jumper). The 2nd thing was in regards to the Richmond .vs. South Melbourne footage from 0:51 , the players I can name are Hugh McLaughlin (SM - No.8) with ball , Dave Baxter (Rich - No.2) , Jack Dyer (Rich - No.17) coming through and attempting a bit of rough stuff with the raised elbow. Others are John Raymond 'Ray' Martin (Rich - No.27) , Terry Brain (SM - No.5) , Lindsay Richards (SM - No.7) & Jock McKenzie (SM - No.30). Not sure but I think the other South player facing the action with hands out calling for the ball might be Jack Bissett (No.1), South's Captain / Coach. Most likely the match is the 1934 VFL GF (Sat 13 Oct , 1934) won by Richmond - 19.14.128 (their highest score for the year) to South Melbourne - 12.17.89.

The South Melbourne players (at 4:14) in 1909 looked like they were wearing seatbelts across their shirts.

Thankyou for posting this Gezz! Would you happen to know if there was a Volume Two?
33:30 Don't worry about the pothole in the middle of the player's race, if you do your ankle we have plenty of players in reserve.

That match in 1911 was VFA not VFL. Ballarat was never in the VFL. 1929 Collingwood team was NOT one of the greatest Footy teams of all time it is THE greatest Footy team of all time. Still holds the record as the only UNDEFEATED TEAM in Footy history 91 years ago.

Yes, Collingwood were undefeated in the 1929 H&A season (winning 18 out of 18) but lost Richmond in the second Semi Final then beat Richmond in the Grand Final

It was commonplace in that era for VFL clubs to travel to country towns or even interstate to play a mid-season match. It was a highlight of the season for them, so here Geelong has gone to Ballarat. Obviously the match isn't for points & doesn't count as a VFL match per se.

I think they also have honour of being beaten in the most consecutive GFs in VFL history... Eight !!!

People watching the game with joyous looks on their faces... The modern fan is a fanatical nut case with drible running down their chin. The modern game is an oppressive monolith of rules which can be some what altered to fitt up an out come... This film shows how far society has fallen, psychologicall...
