1976 BMW 2002 - WR TV POV Test Drive

Even as their vehicles get larger and more complex, BMW has made a point of recalling the diminutive and beloved 2002 as a frame of reference for the inspiration behind cars like the new M235i. First sold in 1968, the 2002 was instrumental in establishing BMW's reputation in the realm of compact sports sedans and coupes, and served as the predecessor to the 3-Series.
Today we got a chance to take an in-depth look at this Sahara colored example, which is equipped with a 98hp, 2.0-liter four cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission.

OMG, I hope you enjoyed this. I almost cried just watching this. I love BMW's, especially old ones. Reminds me of our old 318i. You guys should find an E21 323i and take it for a spin. that would be AWESOME!!

Classic BMW's are the best. An ALPINA 2002tii Touring would be the ultimate. I had a grey market '77 316 with euro bumpers and "single headlights", '78 320i and an '85 323i Euro at one point or an other. Miss those cars a lot. Good drives. Never owned a 2002 and probably never will as they command $$$ now.

Memory Lane! I bought the 1600-2 version of this BMW in 1968, and the styling underwent only minor detail changes over 7 or 8 years. Came to regret not upgrading to the 2002 with its bigger engine, but the 1600 was a great little car. I was a Car and Driver subscriber and was motivated to make the purchase by a cover and rave review of the 2002 early in 1968.

I had one. These cars drove really well from 50 to 80 mph with a wonderfully smooth acceleration in this range. Seemingly faster that almost any other 4 cylinder car in it's day.....

We have the BMW 1602(1975) in Greece until today.I remember a trip fro Athens to Rome.From port of Bari directly to autostrada and the engine 140-145km at relantir with a little bit the accelerator 180km!!

The 76 '02 was my first car. Damn greatest car ever. Even with them bumpers. Quick and nimble, awesome sounding through that Ansa exhaust when you wound out the gears. Oh man, the memories.

If you grew up in the 80's driving second hand 70's cars your love might be tempered by how drafty, noisy and unreliable they were. And how the interiors of just 6 to 8 year old cars would literally fall apart all around you as you drove. But they looked good.

Hi Chris, Could I ask how you are mounting your camera to get that great POV view? I'm going to guess a ball-cap with a Go Pro mounted to the top of the bill?? Really curious since the POV is really spot-on!! I'm also guessing you're not recording audio to the camera either, but to a recorder & then syncing the two in an editor?? P.S. -> When you looked at the seatbelt in the beginning and I saw how thin the side of the car is; I ended up wincing later on when the Roadway truck passed you. Damn that would hurt to get hit by anything in this car...

FEVER! once you get hooked on 02's you are doomed.. 20 years ago.. heck even ten years ago you could buy these like apples by the bushel .. now they rare and gold. Great car!

I miss the sound of the M10 engine and that classic BMW gear whine... And the smell of horsehair in the seats on a warm day. "Like" if you understand! I'm only 32, but I had a few classic Bimmers in my early 20's. Great cars, the new ones just don't compare.

Prior to watching this video I thought that these cars sounded and behaved more like E30, but this is a really vintage. I have good speakers, good soundcard and I have found many of the sounds of the car annoying. Also the steering rack ratio is just ridiculous. I love the styling of this car, but I would never pay money to live with it.

cars in the 70s and 80s did not have a chime back then, they had buzzers, the first car that had a classic ding was the 1981 Cadillac Seville that came with a bell being hit by a hammer on the passenger side.

I have nice oem 1602 parts, anyone....??? brand new in box oem 1600 pistons .25mm over size complete with rings & pin, rebuilt early 1.6 head, 276 cam cleaned pressure tested seals guilds, a 1600 block matching vin##, and body ID plate 1563#### plate numbers matching a clear California Pink Slip old school, the block will need cleaning & machining, crank everything there to revive early car or do a unique rebuild. My 1968 1602 long gone now in parts obviously, but not forgotten, I replaced it with 1971 2002, and 1970 e9, among a few others.

Those bumpers are on all US spec bmws from that era, they are there to pass 5mph crash tests, somewhat harming the looks in the process.
