Customer came in with an engine that he said was knocking. Since I had never heard the engine run, I decided it would make a great video just to see how bad the knock ended up being. Enjoy the carnage!

Hmmmm.....#'s matching block?? Since the crank is either shot or requires a regrind, IMHO, I would say a nice 383 stroker kit, cam/springs, heads, and induction after some machining on the block. In any event, that block needs saving even if it's only a 2 bolt to be put in the corner as it's original to the car. Had an '82 that was custom but it was a dog. Now my '90 was modded and I got up to 165 with still more pedal but it was scary on the turnpike and not the place.

It sounds like that engine needs to be rebuilt. Nice looking car but you start with the engine first great job man love what you do

Amazed a 1976 Vette could achieve 120MPH...before promptly blowing up, lol! You'll improve it, though, to hold together at that speed. And beyond! That's a pretty car, and it deserves whatever attention you feel like giving it.

@@frankkeel8410 I miss the Autobahn of the 1980s...where one COULD do 140 MPH all day. I couldn't get away with that back in 1980s America where the speed limit...if I were lucky...could be 60-65...

Before I bought my C4 ZR-1, I was looking at C3s. So many have side pipes on them. I would have traded someone the side pipes for longtubes and a regular exhaust. Nothing like burning your legs every time you get out of the vehicle. Not sure why the side pipes were such a popular mod

My Blueprint has no issues at 120MPH LOL but change that stock TH350 when you throw it in or he will be back in a few months LOL

I had an 81 that did the same thing. I rebuilt it to a 355 which made a huge difference after adding some go-fast goodies. The car was made into a convertible in an earlier life and drew a lot of attention. Sold it at a Bloomington Gold Mecum auction to someone in Birmingham.

The owner needs to up grade to a 4L80E while putting in the engine as well. Better gas mileage and higher top speed with the overdrive.

I used to own a 1991 Pontiac Trans am 5.0 . 120,000 MI . Nathan mistake of letting my oldest daughter drive it. When I get it back it sounded exactly like that . Either she blew the motor or one of her boyfriends blew the motor

Back in the day we would do poor man rebuilds. We would clean up the journals and slap in some fresh bearings. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn’t.

I'm old enough to remember how people were amazed at how underpowered the stock 76 was yet it was one of the best selling model years to date. Not taking a dig, but I thought the base engine wasn't even geared for 120 mph LOL. Maybe that was an L82?

I rebuilt an engine then first run out put a con rod right through the block. 🤦‍♂ Bits of cast iron covered in oil floating down the road. Guess I skipped the page on torque settings. 🤣😂 she sounds great BTW 😘👌 just like mine for 2 mins

Its not that bad just needs a light rebuild probably a stroker kit since the crank is bad

Don't you think a simple rebuild would do (instead of a new engine) and retain the "numbers" aspect?

When you consider all the parts and labor needed (machine shops are becoming scarce and are expensive) the cost even for a Chevrolet small block would be much higher than for a new crate engine replacement.

Customer’s decision not mine. With the crate he still has the option to rebuild the original anyways

lord take this piston from its cylinder wall ! it Kant hold it any more !its getting dark to dark to see as the oil is burning off the exhaust as the piston is free !

Let's see key safety pins missing from steering rods, to remove pan. Pan different color than rest of engine and a newish gasket. Can't imagine this rod's been knocking before. Nope, not fishy to me...

You mentioned some type of steering box. I am about to put a new steering box on my 68 vette. Are there better options than stock?

He mentioned a Borgeson steering box. They are about as good as it gets for stock replacements, but they just do stock.

120 for a corvette is not that fast. The motor is probably just tired being from 1976.

It is for that one. The L48 engine only made 180hp. Even brand new, they were a dog.

Depends on the price. It's described as the worst ever. Not having a Corvette and wanting one is worstever. Do research for parts availability.😊
