Tokyo Rose (alternative spelling Tokio Rose) was a name given by Allied troops in the South Pacific during World War II to all female English-speaking radio broadcasters of Japanese propaganda. The programs were broadcast in the South Pacific and North America to demoralize Allied forces abroad and their families at home by emphasizing troops' wartime difficulties and military losses. Several female broadcasters operated under different aliases and in different cities throughout the Empire, including Tokyo, Manila, and Shanghai. The name "Tokyo Rose" was never actually used by any Japanese broadcaster, but it first appeared in U.S. newspapers in the context of these radio programs in 1943.
During the war, Tokyo Rose was not any one individual, but rather a group of largely unconnected women working within the same propagandist effort throughout the Japanese Empire. In the years shortly following the war, the figure of 'Tokyo Rose' - whom the FBI now avers to be "mythical" - became an important symbol of Japanese villainy for the United States. American cartoons, films, and propaganda videos between 1945 and 1960 tend to portray her as highly sexualized, manipulative, and deadly to American interests in the South Pacific, particularly by leaking intelligence of American losses in radio broadcasts. Similar accusations surround the propaganda broadcasts of Lord Haw-Haw and Axis Sally, and in 1949 the San Francisco Chronicle described Tokyo Rose as the "Mata Hari of radio."
Tokyo Rose ceased to be merely a symbol in September 1945 when Iva Toguri D'Aquino, an American-born Japanese disc jockey for a propagandist radio program, attempted to return to the United States. Toguri was accused of being the 'real' Tokyo Rose, arrested, tried, and became the seventh person in U.S. history to be convicted of treason. Toguri was eventually paroled from prison in 1956, but it was more than 20 years before she received an official presidential pardon for her role in the war.

I’m so glad that her name was cleared. It must’ve been so hard and scary for her. She may not have been military, but she was a POW. I can’t even imagine what it was like for her.

She seemed to have the typical Japanese toughness if you look at how smiley she was. She refused to give anyone the satisfaction of taking her joy away.

Hezakya, you have been busy =) To those who read this... Please consider going to Patreon and support this man. Come out of the dark side, young Skywalker! You never hear him begging for donations like other KZfaqrs. $5 a month. That's a very smal amount that I can blow in one day, easily. Thanks for doing what you do so well, man! Be blessed, today and always! =)

@@HezakyaNewz - No thanks are ever necessary! You have a passion for film making and bringing attention to social issues. As George Santayana said "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Keep doing what you do. I saw Dr. King get assassinated. I saw 4 kids get shot by the Nat. Guard, in my home state of Ohio, May 4, 1970. (The local news said some were shot in the back, but then the national new reported it differently.) We are alike, dear sir, being vocal on unpopular subjects, and not "going with the flow". If you were in this for the $, your subject matter would be very different. Keep your passion ignited, Hezakya! Don't ever stop. May God bless and keep you & yours, today and always! =)

She was a very impressive lady. A great lady. So glad she got pardoned by President Ford, but sorry she had to wait so long for it, or go through such a terrible ordeal. America's abandonment of her should never have happened and she should never have gone to prison.

Recall seeing a news story about Ms Toguri presenting a petition for a presidential pardon, saying "I've been on this merry go round long enough and it's time to get off." President Gerald Ford pardoned her on his last day in office.

If memory serves me correctly, the lead prosecutor shot himself in the head and committed suicide in 1956 or 1959. He did not leave a note or explanation but family and friends suspect it was from guilt for having wrongfully railroaded Iva Toguri for the sake of politics and self-promotion.
