Without a doubt, but some of the reason he didn't get his due notoriety is of his own volition. He got into drugs and neglected training, and thus underachieved. Great potential, very clever boxer, this was his defining moment here. I think he won against Ali as well, which would have catapulted him into stardom had it been judged correctly.

Dennis R Judged correctly? Throughout the entire bout, both men landed the exact same number of punches on each oher, and that is 76 total punches, through 15 rounds. Not nearly enough activity to take the title away from the champion, and just enough from Ali to keep it.

Retire for 10 years and come back to be the oldest heavyweight champion ever is what 'Foreman' had to do, to be a crowd pleaser. He indeed was not a crowd favorite during his boxing days in the 60's-70's, but once he came out of retirement he became the toast of boxing, then the fans started loving him. Strange how things play out sometimes, you just never know.

@metsrus
@metsrus 2 жыл бұрын
@@SKa-tt9nm nah there was an interview where he literally said he didn't like fighting and hurting people. It's just he was so good at it. He wanted to be a pastor. "I didn't like boxing. I never liked boxing. I hated it. I hated that I had to hit to make my living," he told SI. "I had to come back into boxing because I stopped earning." Foreman, who turned pro in 1969, retired twice - first in 1977, taking ten years off, and then calling it quits for good in 1997 when he was 48. He became the oldest man to win the heavyweight title when he knocked out Michael Moorer in 1994 at age 45 and retired with a record of 76-5 with 68 knockouts.

One of the most amazing rounds I've ever seen. Even Jimmy said he doesn't know how he survived. When Foreman went for the kill and couldn't knock the opponent out, he ran out of gas quickly and left himself very vulnerable. As Ali proved Foreman can be had when he over exerts himself. You had to have an amazing chin and heart to survive Foremans onslaughts.

The irony of this fight is that when Gil Clancy started training Foreman he had him conserve more energy and shorten some punches. But in this fight Clancy repeatedly told George to bomb Young out like the old days. But George wouldn't, or couldn't. He tried to solve Young's style, and Jimmy outboxed him.
@thunderbrand
@thunderbrand 10 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Impressive finish plus two or three rounds of dominance through counter-punching, that's it. The rest of the time Young was mostly trying to survive and that's what earned him the victory. That said, I think Young was a great boxer on his good days but lacked stability. What I like about Foreman the most is that he was always the dominant fighter, even in the fights that he didn't win (reminds me of FC Barcelona in football). He's my second all-time favourite after Ali.

Foreman was a dominant fighter. Here's the reality, if not for Ali George probably never loses a professional fight in his life. After Ali George was messed up mentally. The Young fight was a sloppy, sluggish, still psychologically damaged Foreman and he still almost got the KO. Unlike Ali, Frazier, Norton and the rest George didn't take much punishment. In fact, he dished out the punishment which is one of the reasons he still functions well to this day. Keep in mind Cus D'Amato never wanted Tyson to fight George because he knew that was a bad matchup for Mike. George was just too big, strong, and with a good chin. Mike wasn't ready for that kind of a test in his young career.
@captainactionman01
@captainactionman01 9 жыл бұрын
George would've fought Tyson like Douglas, moving forward. Tyson might've won, but he'd had to have had hit George 20 shots to his one to do it. "Iron Mike" sure could dish it out, but he could not take a punch.
@eugenemcgirt
@eugenemcgirt 9 жыл бұрын
Fred Gregg I disagree with your comment that Tyson could not take a punch. When did Mike ever show a weak chin? He took tremendous shots from Douglas that would have floored most heavies. He also took a lot of punishment from Holyfield and didn't get KO'd, even though he was TKO'd. Tyson also showed a good chin vs. Tony Tucker and Frank Bruno after being hit with shots early by them and a little stung. Tyson always showed a good chin but it was often overshadowed because of the punishment he was dishing out. Tyson also was very good defensively in his prime and wasn't going to get hit as often as most heavyweights.

Tyson weighed 215 lbs when he conquered Larry Holmes in four one - sided rounds and weighed 218 lbs when he crusaded towards victory over the 31-0-0 Michael Spinks. The 1964-67 Muhammad Ali was fast - probably the fastest heavyweight in history - believe me. Ali was not as fast in the 1970's but he was still very fast during his comeback. Ali was pretty muscular was always in great shape for his big fights - the big fights that he won anyway. The 1973-74 prime version of Foreman was also fast and was also normally in magnificent shape. Foreman was 40-0-0 (37 knockouts), including destroying Frazier and prime Norton in two rounds, was 25 - years - old, was never floored as a pfrofessional and was rarely hit in forty professional fights before losing in eight rounds to Ali. Foreman only looked slow and lethargic in Zaire because he fought foolishly and basically punched himself out in unbearable heat. Anyone would look and lethargic while puncing themselves out in unbearable heat. And Ali's pushing, pulling, leaning on and clinching would not have did Foreman any favours in Zaire either. Foreman looked pretty fast to me when he destroyed Wepner, Chuvalo, Frazier (first fight) and Norton while going 40-0-0 (37 knockouts). Foreman wasn't the same fighter post - Zaire for whatever reason. The pre - Zaire Foreman was a workaholic whereas the post - Zaire Foreman never trained as rigorously. Foreman would probably have reigned right into the early 1980's - if not longer - if he had beaten Ali or if Ali never existed as Foreman doesn't lose to Young if Foreman doesn't lose to Ali first. The 1973-74 version of Foreman would have beaten Jimmy Young similarly to how Foreman beat Frazier (first fight) and prime Norton. Young lost to Norton not long after Young beat Foreman whereas prime Foreman annihilated prime Norton in two one - sided rounds three years earlier. Foreman's skills would also have developed naturally with age and experience if he had continued throughout the late 1970's and early 1980's. Foreman was was also only 28 - years - old when he retired in 1977 therefore he would still only have been in his early thirties in the early 1980's if he had still been competing. So Foreman would also have been a fighter of the 1980's. And if Foreman had still been competing early 1980's then he would have been 235-240 lbs of solid muscle as he would not have been in semi - retirement. Although I still think Foreman would have had his Damascus Road experience as that was just meant to be. I also think the 1973-74 version of Foreman would have decimated any version of Larry Holmes in four or five rounds.

It's hard to compare speed in between boxers such as Tyson and Ali, given their height and reach differences. Ali was faster with his jab-cross combo than Tyson could ever dream of. However, Tyson was much faster with his hooks and uppercuts. Besides, nobody can dispute the fact that Tyson was more of a natural heavyweight than Ali, seeing as he never fought in any other division. As I said already, Ali had FOUR INCHES on Tyson in height, and Tyson still weighed the same as Ali in his prime.

IF that's true, then George was a fool for agreeing to do that. He must have assumed he could have knocked out Young whenever he wanted. And maybe he could have, but not by playing footsie like this. He needed to flip on the switch and bomb away like he did against Norton for example. If he did that, Young wouldn't have lasted three rounds.

The judges didn't job Jimmy Young in this fight like they did in the Ali fight, which Young clearly won.

Yeah, he did. All for the greater good of George Foreman, who ended up as World Heavyweight Champion 17 years later, whíle Young never beat a good fighter ever again.

Jimmy did a great Fight here. He knocked Foreman down so easy in the last round. He was the best Boxer of the mid-seventies. He also won against Ali and Norton, but was robbed. He also beat Lyle !

People on here are talking about Marciano he fought Light Heavyweights Charles, Walcott and Moore and was nearly ko'd by Moore in his last fight and Moore was about 42 years old at the time, Marciano would have been a cruiserweight today he never weighed more than 190 pounds.

"Bum"is a bit strong. Young suffered from fighting in the 1970s, the greatest decade for heavyweight fighters. He had a good chin - the only person to KO him was Shavers, who was a much harder puncher than Tyson.

After watching this BS , it puzzles the crap out of me why everyone shits on today's era especially in the ww division Look at how sloppy these men are , Young did land some crisp right hands but overall very painful to watch Ali got too much credit for defeating this sloppy version of Foreman . The older guy was more beautiful to watch unfortunately people think it was a weaker version simply because of age Which isn't the case

How much do you really know about boxing? I'm not criticizing you----just asking what your background is with boxing? Jimmy Young was a terrific boxer, great defensive fighter and one of the best counter-punchers of his time in the heavyweight division. Foreman tired easily back then----had that problem in several of his fights. I picked Young to score the upset back when this fight took place.

Oh, you mean his near death experience just after the fight. Well yeah you could look at it that way, or that things always turn out how they are meant to, like fate and destiny type thinking...that might work too. His comeback was truly amazing...not just his age, but the shape he appeared to be in was not quite Butterbean, but not what you would think of as world class material and he was knocking guys out left, right and center! Praise the Lord, eh?

foreman vs young is the fight of the year according to ring magazine? why? the fight was alright, it probably was a big upset, but action-wise, it was really lacking. Young was always clinching, as soon as foreman initiated the action. Until the 7th round nothing happened (besides a point reduction). The 7th round was alright, but all in all not a fight I would consider FOTY. Foreman Vs Lyle >>>>>>> Foreman Vs Young

+marietto2008 from youngs perspective it was the right strategy. He nullified foremans offense and got the win. i dont dispute that. im talking about the fight of the year awards, given to the most exciting and awesome fights in the boxing history.

If Young had wielded real heavyweight power,he would have quite possibly knocked out 2 super legends;and im talking about Ali[where he distanced him],and Forman[major upset decision].Philly counter punchers are often avoided spoilers.Hell George went into retirement for A LONG TIME,after getting a piece of small Jimmy Young.RIP.

The only reason for didn't knock him out and this is quoted by George Foreman in his book, was because Don King had promoted the fight and had instructed him to lengthen the fight so media could get more advertising which in turned back fired when George was clearly the better fighter.

George's mistake was he was trying to out box Jimmy, what he should have done was fight Young like he fought Ali and he would have won.

spanish rampage Agreed. Young applied even dirtier tactics than Foreman. What I think Foreman took this fight very lightly as you mentioned he arrived here a day before the fight. I’m not sure what his preparations were for this fight. Foreman needed more patience in this fight. He should’ve wait for the right time to deliver the knockout punches and I’m sure he would’ve done it. In this fight he tried the knockout tactics from the start and in the process not only lost energy but also took lot of shots to the dace. He was one the greatest heavyweights and loosing to fighters such as Young really upsetting. If he had won this fight he would’ve another title shot.

Looks like George retired before this fight!! no punching at all. wonder if he threw it. never the less , only two losses at 40 years old. while Ali had 5. Foreman destroyed Frazier and Norton. Ali lost to them.

Yes Shavers was a hard hitter and heavier handed than Tyson but didn't have the Hand speed of the 20 year old Tyson watch him against Jesse Ferguson.Also Shavers lost to the Tough but very limited White fighter Randall Tex Cobb who was basically a human punching bag.

Actually you still dont know what you are talking about. Peralta was a really good boxer and he went 10 rounds with him in both bouts. Peralta had 110 bouts and was only stopped 3 times. Foreman's fought slower and threw less punches in his comeback but his stamina wasnt bad in his prime or his comeback.
