Today on my bench is a dirtball of a video recorder i got from ebay.
It is a JVC HR-3330 VHS video recorder from 1977. This is the first model of VHS video recorder sold and is purely analogue and mechanical. This make working on it a pleasure.
In this video we go round this beaten up machine, clean it up and see if it powers up.

I have Akai VS-9800 which is based exactly on this JVC.I found it from Ebay and succeed to restore it !!Just need a full set of new belts!!

This is actually an HR-3660/3V16. I can tell because of the remote control and slow/double speed playback capabilities. Mine is an HR-3330TR which has PAL/SECAM/NTSC 4.43 playback but no remote and slow motion.

i got one of these, ferguson model, it needs belts, i have had it playing once many years back, but its sat ever since doing nothing

The first model was HR3300EK then came the HR3330EK

Great video. Couple questions for you. For these VCRs with their age is there anything special you do before powering one up for the first time? Also, have one but the timer lever is missing. Do you know of a source for a replacement?

I use a current limiting bulb to make sure that if there is a short that the nbulb takes the load not the video recorder. Fraid its buy a parts machine for a flap!

Probably the bulb wires that led to an incandescent lamp that went into the the cassette housing when you inserted a tape which shone through the clear headers on the tape reels so the machine knew it was at the beginning or end of a tape. It was common practise back in the day to sometimes twist the wires together so the machine would work when the bulb blew.

Yes. It was the bulb for the tape end sensors.. someone nad cut them fixed in next video. :)
