RESTORE IT! The plastics CAN be fixed. Extreme restorations on Atari computers MUCH worse than this I've seen.

I wonder if it might be fun to create a completely new housing for it. It could look lovely in a steam punk inspired wooden housing with brass fittings.

I remember at my first job, 3 chaps buying these when they came out. I think I had my Amiga 1000 at the time, and was not much impressed by them, graphics and sound-wise. Of course, you couldn't argue with the range of software. Someone else I knew was a computer novice, and he asked me to help him with his new 1512. I recall making backups of the GEM disks for him, and showing him how a spreadsheet worked.

Great video. I'm currently just trying to resurrect one of these. You mentioned a double band underneath the cassette. But then didn't show them replaced on the video. Do you happen to have any photos of these please.

Same happened with my PC1640HD and its 20Mb drive. Looked almost identical when I also pulled it apart after I'd resigned myself that the drive was dead.

This is a lost cause. This is the classic head crash. There's no magnetic media left on this platter, it has all been ground off... Very unfortunate.

I'm suprised that drive worked as much as it did initially with the platter in that state!

It's a shame when the drives fail that way =/ The same thing happened on that Archimedes A440 I restored. I suspect what happens is a small piece lifts on the surface, clogs the head, head proceeds to dig up the rest of the disk =/ Either that or the head has something on it (plastic) that disolves with age, and the head just starts to tear up the surface... Might be worth taking a drive like this to bits, before its powered up to inspect the disk surface, and the heads, before that "first power on in 20 years" - but the chances are, someone else powered it up already... And of course, it could just be the disk surface itself that has "degraded" over the years which starts the destruction process.

Agreed. After reviewing the footage a while back i tried multiple different computers and had the same issue. Tried a resistor in series and the Amstrad CPC picked up header but didn't load. rest were not happy.

Former Radio Shack salesman here. I had used and sold these cassette decks for many years. Myself and my friends had TRS-80 computers or Commodore 64's back then. Now I manage a Microsoft Azure tenant for my company, wow how times have changed. In watching this video I'm not sure you are using this correctly. I used tape for many many years both personally and for small businesses. If I get a chance I'll come back to you on this one.

This might be a good unit for computers, using the USB, because most of these record in mp3 which is not suitable for the task, but this one uses wav encoding. Just don't use the remote input. What is the samplig rate and bit depth of the wav file it records?
@jasejj22 күн бұрын
Yeah I've not had good luck with these modern cassette decks with computers, they're awful. I've had better luck with one of those digital dictaphone type things that save to micro SD and have line/mic input - these do produce reasonable results although they don't do the remote control (which you can live without). The other good thing about those is they have a display so you can name your files and play back the appropriate one - I use mine with a bunch of OTLA files to fast-load stuff into various machines. It also has a built in battery so one less cable to be faffing about with. For the cassette side - the Sony ones are dirt cheap second hand and work well.

Don't bin it, it is certainly repairable. Better than necking it... If somehow not rapairable, because a wire got pulled out from deep inside the coil, source an other deflection coil. This thing is too nice to bin it, especially with such a strong tube.

These were made for Philips by Loewe, around 1985, there was a red version with a Pye badge (Pye Red Box) and a computer beige version badged Philips which were part of a Viewdata kit. These TV's are not remote control sets. My KZfaq profile picture is the Pye version! - I also have a complete spare working tube :)

Only one question, i want to replace the 47uF 450 volt electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, but i have only 400 volt ones,do they go boom,or is it better,to purchase 450 volt ones from ebay?

Always put the same voltage or higher in. capacitance in most cases can be varied.

Those WD drives seize up on both the spindle and the head stepper motor. A drop of oil is usually all that's needed to get them running.

I took out my pinch roller to give it a good cleaning, but now I can’t get it positioned so that the post it pivots on is exposed above the top plate. When i press down on the roller housing, the post only comes up flush. There’s no end exposed to slide the lock ring on. Can you offer a suggestion? You seemed to have no trouble reinstalling yours. Thanks!
@ResurrectionRetroАй бұрын
Try turning it upside down and reinstalling. I think the metal bracket the roller is attached to is not symmetrical.

Excellent! 1512 DD with EGA graphics was the first family computer we had. I now have a 2086 with a 30MB RLL hard drive. I also have a 1386 which I'd never heard of until I got one off Ebay a while ago. I was using a XT-IDE card in my 2086, but went back to using the RLL drive as I like the sound of it. When you get a keyboard & can boot it you might be able to use something like SpeedStor to investigate the hard drive further. Looking forward to this project continuing.

the most important thing to remember when working on equipment is to never let it get between you and the door. When testing equipment. You're probably going to have to do most of your trouble shooting while the equipment is live. Live and powered is the only way to actually see what's going on, provided you have the proper test equipment. All you really need for an old tv is a good multimeter, maybe a degausser. Considering the age of the tv. A color bar generator wouldn't be worth your time. Even the transistor models will often have a tube for the high voltage rectifier. The whine is probably a voltage leak from the flyback, but im not there to look at it so im just taking a guess. You can trace audio with a signal tracer if you want to go the trouble. leave the caps alone until they fail. Instead of vacuuming. I recommend 120 psi of air. I started working on those when they had all tubes. Pretty simple stuff really. No test equipment can restore a CRT. they have a finite life. They can only be replaced. In my opinion that CRT analyzer is a useless piece of equipment. Your eyes will tell you everything you need to know. If you're going to work on old junk. You're going to need a degausser, and clean and lubricate the pots on the convergence control panel ....leave the cap alone unless you see a problem. Electrolytic caps will often self heal with use unless they are significantly degraded. That plastic cover is probably there because the heatsinks are live and not at ground potential, so touching them while the equipment is under power will probably kill you. Well Rick's TV repair school is now closed. Have fun and be safe..
