1977 Mighty Tonka Dump Truck Restoration

I restore a Mighty Tonka Dump truck. This restoration was very difficult for me. My work space is small and I could only work on one section at a time. Whatever paint Tonka used in the 70's was serious stuff, it was very difficult to remove.
I did this restoration over the course of three weeks.

There’s a KZfaqr that does a lot of toys like this. He uses sand blaster to remove paint and powder coat paints them. You put in a lot of work, fantastic job!

There are other Tonka Toys that you could find that are not too big as the Dump Truck but atleast did a good job restoring it as the best you could.

I have a few of the smaller ones and plan on restoring them eventually. I think I have a plan to restore them even better.

Really nice restoration. I've seen other guy's channels where they are using a sand blaster to remove the paint & then repainting with powder coating. I think you achieved very comparable results without using those seemingly more expensive restoration methods. great job!

Looks great !I didnt have any paintstripper on mine so i tried caustic soda ,also totally worthless,then i heated the paint with a heatgun ,and it seems to brittle up the paint so it was easier to scrape off,then i sanded it. Just a thought : maybe cover it in plastic after applying your stripper so it wont dry away so fast ?

Good idea. I thing the aircraft paint stripper needs to be covered. It dried extremely quickly.

You can leave the plastic out of the cab and they look fine, most kids like to put a little action figure in their any way, Good Job on rebuild though .

That is not a bad idea, but I think the plastic windows add a lot to the final result. I might take them out like you said so my daughter can play with it.

Hydrogen peroxide in a zip lock baggie with the cab in it sit it outside on a nice warm sunny day for a few hours it will reverse most if not all the yellowing
