I guess this is why people say when you see rust, you only see 10% of that. That car looked almost rust free with a few bubbles. however as you started cutting my jaw dropped at the amount of hidden rust that revealed itself. It is so fascinating watching you guys tackle these jobs. you make it look easy. can't wait for more videos. im about to do rust repair on a 1964 Opel Kadett. it's very rusty and i have been too afraid to start. but your videos have helped me repair rust on my daily driver and i feel like im confident i can do the work on my classic project car. If i mess up i can always do it again haha 😅

Any Manta guy could see where this was going....no surprises when you opened up the sill area. We've all been there. Fortunately my rear arches were surprisingly good, just the lower 2-3 inches where the mudflap had been. Stunning cars tho & 75 to 79 chrome bumper ones far nicer than the later ones....also had thicker steel I believe but still didn't stop the rot in all the usual Manta/Ascona/Cav places. That's an early one with the shrouded headlights....same as mine but in orange. Mine was bright yellow, or as Opel called it Brilliant Ochre. Always toyed with changing the colour to the Orange as it reminded me of a neighbours one when I was a kid

I owned an example as a 21 year old. USM 662T. Even when it was just six years old it had rust issues in the sills and inner wings. Sadly corrosion protection in the 70’s was not as good as it should have been. Lovely cars though especially in Berlinetta trim.

Love the VX490. I’ve a memory of a very cool driving friend frightening the life out of three teenage passengers by high speed driving through the lanes in rural Hampshire. He was occasionally using the banks to force the car to turn, that & plenty of flicked opposite lock, engine roaring. I was one of those passengers. It was the early 1980s. The car was grey, I think, and had been modified.

I have a Calibra which came after the Manta, looks very,very similar steel build and the wheel arches and front jacking points are the worst. A guy I knew sold a Manta in the 80's, he covered newspaper with filler and put it in the drivers footwell, then glued the carpet down. When he was selling it the buyer tried to lift the carpet to check for rust - but couldn't - absolute pepper pot Manta's were.

If you see thick layers of Bondo then you dig further. After a while, you find the coffin. If you open it you find tons of wet rust, mostly deep black. Dig it up, collect it, and bring it to a local blast furnace. They make iron for you again. Cost an arm and a leg, but you got something.

That looks like a 1980s style restoration. I seen cars from the 70s restored in the 80s having quarter panels looking just like that. It's more of a "repair" job than a restoration. And most of them were done on the premise that the car would get wrecked or junked before the quality of the work started to show its shortcomings.
@jamesward5721
@jamesward5721 Жыл бұрын
I did one of these before - exact same chrome arch trims - except the last chap at them had re-rivetted the trims on using what must have been the worlds crappiest rivet gun - every rivet had the steel center pin broken off proud, meaning drilling them was impossible. I had to carefully grind off every rivet head, an absolute pita not to hit the chrome.. got the rivets all ground off & the git had epoxy-resin glued them as well. :-) Bad words were uttered... was every bit as rusted as this one too - them earlier Opels do like to rot.. Those look to be Magnum arch panels - I'm a Fan of those, they go on very well in my experience. The sills not so much.. :-) I tacked one of them arch panels on once, a full 3/4 inch too far back - not paying attention... I had to grind every tack back off to move it - never did that boo-boo again, I now make a big clear "correct center" mark before I mark anything else - Lesson learnt.

@@yorkshirecarrestoration You probably had about 80% of the "tacks" done too... I know I did.. Sweet Lord, there was about 2 inches of unwelded panel left to "tack". It was on like a bit of the Forth Bridge.. "Ah FFS like!" :-)
