@@MichaelSmith-mi2vr The Dodgers always get blamed for that without the whole story being told. The Federal Gov't. sought that land back around 1950, They were going to use it for a housing project and other things. Those residents were given notices back then and most of the owners negotiated with the fed. on a selling price and sold their home. Some did not and stayed. When local elections took place and a new mayor was elected he wasn't favorable to the idea so the land sat there as is. Eventually, the federal gov't. nixed the idea and sold the land back to the city of LA. All the while those that stayed behind were living for free. They paid no property tax, paid for no city or county services yet still received them for several years. This is all after they were given notice that the gov't. was going to acquire the property. Then in '56-'57 LA started talking to Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley who was unsuccessful to that point in getting a new stadium site. They invited him out and showed him certain areas available. He picked Chavez Ravine. Not only did O'Malley buy that land with his own $$ he also bought the remaining properties of the still occupied houses and paid the owners far more than market value. The film footage you see of people being kicked out was all staged by the tv news crews. This was admitted to later by all involved. One of the families owned 11 properties and one was right in the area. It was all a big show.

Maddox got way too much blame for that inning. He made one error on Dusty's liber but the play where Cey scored was not his fault. It would've taken a quick catch (one bounce) and a hard, accurate throw to get Cey out with him running (2 out). Most outfielders today wouldn't be able to make that play. Some great memories here. Love the old school (knobless) bat Bill Russell used. Garvey-Lopes-Russell- Cey ; still the greatest infield I've ever seen.

Their known for their longevity than their talent. None of them are in the HOF. Many people make a claim for Garvey to be in the HOF but first basemen need to have monster numbers and he just doesn't have them like other first basemen do. He was great with the glove but had a woeful arm. Cey was a decent power hitter and fielder. Russell was an average or below fielder and a little better than average hitter for a ss back then. He was great in the clutch though. Lopes was an average hitter and had some power later in his career. He is best known for his prowess on the bases. He was a true student of the stolen base. He once stole 33 in a row without being caught.

@@jaycompany4886 What really made the difference for the Reds was Rose was playing left field and they had Geronimo in CF Ken Griffey (Sr.) in RF I think. I think they platooned him and George Foster. Foster was a RHB so he didn't play much only vs. Left handers. When Rose said he would play 3B that allowed Foster to play every day in LF. Foster ended up being their best power hitter. This happened in May '75. The Reds were about a .500 team then and they ended up 108-54. That year or the next he hit 52 HRs.

@@jaycompany4886 Yeah from '75-'79, '80 an MVP and 2nd place another year. Sparky would fit right in with today's managing style. He never left his starters in very long. He would hate the 3 batter rule though. He loved to play matchups. He has one of my favorites lines about Kirk Gibson. He said, "People say he's not a HOFer and I don't disagree with that. But I bet you everyone who's ever played the game wishes they wanted to win as much as he does."

The writers don't consider All-Star game stats when voting for the Hall of Fame. And, you can't compare a first basemen's stats to a second basemen's stats. Thus, both your comments have absolutely no merit whatsoever. Oh... and it's Ryne Sandberg. Not Ryan Sanberg. LOL
@Dontuween

simplygu If they were vying for Gold Gloves, then your point would have been more valid about playing different positions. But we are talking about hitting statistics. In various points, both were clean-up hitters. Both had nearly identical batting stats, expect Garvey never choked during All-Star OR playoff games!

@@paulsonj72 With 2 out and the tying run on 3B, Lopes hit a bullet at Schmidt that went off his leg but caromed over to SS Larry Bowa who grabbed it and fired to first. In a bang-bang play the speedy Lopes was called safe and the tying run scored. Can't tell for sure on the replay but it looked like maybe the throw had him beat. Worse was that Garber then threw over to first and threw it away allowing Lopes to go to 2B and score the go ahead run on Russell's hit This was after an error on Mota's 2B allowing him to go to 3B and score on Lopes' hit. WTF with Maddox on the last play. Look like he didn't even try to make a play

The only chance the Phils had would've been for Maddox to pick up the ball and immediately throw it home. Once he failed to make the grab, the game was over and he knew it.

It wasn't hit hard so by the time he got to it Cey was already around 3rd and no chance for a play.

Rough inning for Gary. He struck out in the top of the 9th. Then he dropped Baker's fly ball and let the game winning hit skip by him, though it probably would not have made a difference had he scooped it cleanly.

Reggie Smith was horrible as a rightie and outstanding as a leftie. He never should have been a switch hitter.

nowdays batters batters take too much time between pitches unstrapping; and restrapping their batting gloves; and alot of not swinging at strikes; and swinging at wild pitches for strike three. ???

He started and batted 1st only 8 times in his career. It looks like they were all in '78. In this series he hit 1st when a LHP started for LA.

@@bbigjohnson069 He had a terrible year in 1978 against left handed pitching. Hit only .210 in 138 at bats. He did manage to draw a few walks so his on base percentage wasn’t terrible. He also only had eight home runs against lefties

This celebration was short lived.The Dodgers would lose the World Series again. Their 3rd WS loss in 5 years. That's ok. Phillies got the last laugh in '80.
