Late 70s American cars get a lot of hate, but as Joe Ligo goes for a drive, he finds plenty to like about this 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V Bill Blass Designer Edition.

Lincoln even knew this in 1979. It doesn't mean I don't like the other Marks that followed or the 1980-89 Continental/Town Car, or even the 1990-97 to a degree, but it was certainly understood this car was the last of such a way of designing a car unencumbered by constraints to follow.

What a stunning car! American car design of the 70's needs to be reappraised, it really is as unique as the renown 50's and 60's cars too, as the decade was the last of this kind of showy excess. A great short film on the history of these luxury cars.

We just test drove this car, we don't own one, so we can't really speak from experience. You'd be better off asking a mechanic. But from what the owner told us, with regular maintenance, these cars are fairly easy to keep going. They shared a lot of parts with other Ford vehicles, so that makes some things easier to fix, too.

That blue and white Bill Blass edition is gorgeous. And as long as you don't mind 0-60 mph in the 14 second range, no road feel in the steering wheel, and cornering capability equal to a pickup, it's the epitome of late 1970s luxury cars.

None of that matters. Road feel, 0-60 times, cornering. None of it. Out on the interstates, floating along at 70 or 75, going out to dinner, or ice cream, then getting off the road and driving through some historic American town, opening up that massive moonroof. Man, that's where this car shines. As for power? It's got plenty. If you need to extra power, floor the accelerator, it'll shift down. It's just fine.

My secretary drove this car....the white and blue Mark V. One winter we had a terrible sleet and snow storm during the day. She was afraid to drive ( her boy friend picked her up) so she allowed me to drive her beautiful Mark V home and park it in my garage. The only draw back was I lived close to work and had to leave my old Bonneville at work ( no problem). 30+ years later I still remember how that car rode and drove ... It was heaven and I was in heaven. It fit perfectly in my garage ( I had my doubts) and I dreamed to one day own one....didn't get one but drove 3 beautiful Cadillacs but they never measured up to that Mark V. That Bill Bass Mark made me feel rich.

My Dad had a baby blue one. I remember driving it as a teen and it had zero road feel, loose steering and bounced like a boat on the seas. The hood was ridiculously long even back then. It proved to be too hard for him to maneuver in his older years so he got a small Toyota pickup truck --we loved it. Ended up selling the Mark V to some guy who weighed over 350 lbs and needed a large car for his bulk.

The CB is not that common. The '77 had a CB that was a large unit that was placed under the dash, and looked obtrusive. The much neater version you see in this car was introduced in the '78 model year.

This is the type of vehicle that President Jimmy Carter would use to collect peanuts and cabinet members alike on his home tour while wearing a polyester suit and listening to that funky beat, bay-bay! I worked for the Z-Nation television show and after the last season had ended I purchased the all blue Lincoln Mark V Diamond Jubilee edition that had been used in season 5. I cleaned the fake blood off the front and put the grill back in and straightened out the bumper (We had removed it and then bolted it back on crooked to make it appear to have run over a zombie). It's no creampuff but it is complete and the interior is in remarkably good condition. I was sent out to purchase it from a lady that had purchased it from a storage facility where the original owner had parked the car for 12 years and the guy had put seat covers on the front and back seats probably when it was new so they were pretty cherry. It had buckets and a center console but it had a column shift. You want to talk about long hoods?! It's a work in progress. Thanks for making this video.

The thing about these old V8s vs new V8s is the way the put the power down. New V8s rev far higher than their predecessors. But the old V8s could haul, as in they could tow. New V8 powered cars could pull a little trailer, but you could haul a camper with a Lincoln. What we think is only a job for a truck used be done by cars as well. It's important to remember most people didn't own trucks. Only farmers, construction workers, and a few select others would buy one. Everyone else bought a car and it did everything. Another interesting thing about these old V8 cars is they're still around. Some people use them everyday as a regular car.

My 72 Mercury Marquis has a fat trailer hitch on it, a 7 pin trailer plug and a Trailer brake controller on it, all from the 70s. Previous owners father towed a trailer with it every now and then to take the kids out camping. It's all about that low RPM torque. You'd never see a fullsize sedan towing stuff these days.

you never drove one...this specific V8 was an anomaly at the time when Pontiac and even Ford themselves were putting out much higher performance engines...the 460 was a compete and utter beast and the 400 was less than a 302...im not even kidding or stretching the truth but as gutless as the 302 was in 1979 the 400 was even slower. like if a train is coming you be better off running, even if you me and can barely walk

I've had the pleasure of driving one of these and I loved it. True, it wasn't quick and most DHL vans would probably accelerate faster than the Mark V, but I didn't care... I was lost in a 70s fantasy, surrounded by beautiful leather and lots of soft padding as I glided past other cars. All I wanted at that moment was an 8-track cassette with some old Elvis songs and some Beatles. I love the opulence of the old American cars starting from the mid 50s, all the way to the 70s. It was a time of celebration, a time for luxury cars, tailfins and incredible beauty. In Europe in the 60s and 70s, most cars were aimed towards efficiency and only the very rich could afford fancy Mercedes and BMWs... Everyone else drove around in a rubbish car and stuff such as electric windows, power mirrors and air conditioning was only reserved for the very rich... Especially in Eastern Europe that was plagued up until the 90s with soviet garbage.

Well when you say " they," you are talking about the car company bean counters. So "they" are killing the sedan because the average American family prefers the Ford F 150. The car companies don't drive the market, people do. Btw, Ford is keeping mustang. Why? Because it's a hot seller.

Nothing better than soft springs and stiff shocks, for the most optimal big car ride. Back then, my buddy and I could buy Sears extra heavy duty shocks for about $20 each install them on those cars and they made an immediate difference. And they lasted forever. The cars came from the factory with shocks so soft, they acted like worn out when new. I never understood why they did that. you needed stiff shocks to keep all that weight under control.....

This vid brings back so many memories. My grandmother had this model (with the opera windows) and she kept it in immaculate condition, it always looked like it just rolled off the showroom floor. It went into the dealership every three months, whether it needed it or not. When we both got older, I would take her out to brunch once a month at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego. We'd get really dressed up, and I'd drive this beast of a car. The reviewer is absolutely correct. It's ostentatious, it's impractical, and it's beautiful, and it's comfortable. I'm sure there aren't too many in the wild anymore, because the hood is so long, you have to be halfway in the oncoming right lane just to see anything. I’m selling one exactly like this, it doesn’t look like this one but it’s in good conditions. I live in Illinois. If somebody is interested reply here and I send my phone number. This car have been in auto shows and has a lot of first place trophies.🏆

Outstanding video! So many KZfaq car videos are factually incorrect, with horrible voiceovers. You capture the elegance of this era of car and manage to poke gentle fun at it while still respecting it. I appreciate your balanced viewpoint. I hope these coupes climb up in value.

A Great video! I loved riding in those "Land Yachts". They had a ride that you couldn't beat and the luxuries inside the interiors then just made it all even better. As always thanks for sharing the memories...👍

@@AutoMoments Maybe one day you will come across a 68 Eldorado to make a video about. That was one heck of a ride also. Have a Happy Holiday...another year has flown by.

Reading the feature article in my recent copy of "Lincoln And Continental Comments'" magazine prompted me to check out this video. Excellent job Joe, loved the video! Superb production and editing. Thank you so much. I am a Lincoln owner as well and have a couple videos of my 1959 Lincoln posted here on youtube.

I had a 1979 Bill Blass Mark 5 with the mock top convertible roof in dark blue and white and I still think it was a strikingly beautiful car! When I saw this one I was in love again!
