John Mandragon same here, I wished more people in the UK could appreciate American cars, barely anyone does and it really pisses me off. I was at a show recently where there was a stunning ‘73 Pontiac Grand Safari Station Wagon and I overheard a Brit describe it as “so grotesque it’s almost nice.” What a knob.

Capt777harris I know, my dad has and had a few yanks because we love ‘em. We’ve got a beautiful ‘68 Country Squire and it’s just the best thing ever. Everything works on it and it’s mint. Even the radio still works, the wacky rear tailgate and the electric front seats. In 1968!

tsh barely any, I think back in the day you used to get more of them but there are scarcely any here now. For some reason, people in the UK who bring over American cars here always buy the worst and most boring ones they can find like 90s Camaros and really scrappy pickups when there are so many much nicer cars they could bring over. It’s a real shame because there were so many fantastic American cars from the 20th Century which are only really appreciated by our LHD European cousins, particularly in France, Germany and Holland.

tsh I really love Wagons, as for GMC Syclones there are only a couple, there are a fair few Typhoons but Syclones are much rarer in Blighty

Back in the day.. if you seen anyone drive one of these big Lincolns... you knew they were rich. Because when those Mark 3's and Mark 4's were brand new at the Lincoln dealers they'd sell for around $10,000.. which was a LOT of money for a car..considering you could buy a brand new Ford Torino or Thunderbird for only $3000 at the Ford Dealer.

There was pride in Engineering then. Corporations made huge profits, workers were not paid bonuses .. The Executive were ... The need for greed saw reduction in quality, specification, Engineering ... Then the wheels fell off. The Fuel crisis when prices reached stratospheric heights killed these beauties off. They weren't performance cars by any means, they were built for the ride and motoring pleasure. Now one wouldn't be able to find a parking spot large enough. When I as a a 14 year old saw a Lincoln Continental being crushed into a cube in the movie >Goldfinger< 1964 it brought tears to my eyes ...

Hahaha I own both a 1977 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz and a 1979 Lincoln Mark V. They are still wonderful cars. Better than any car on the road when I'm driving.. besides the gas mileage

My dad had the 2 door 1967 Continental with the cool speedometer while growing up., However I ❤ the Mark III more so than a Mark IV I owned, in past.

Oh yes. That two toned navy/white combined with chrome accents really made a statement.

It was more exciting to see a Mark III on the streets than it was to see a Rolls-Royce. I was only 11 or 12 when the Mark III came out 😃

The TV series Cannon is back on TV where I live. It's on COZI TV on digital channel 41.2 every weeknight. He drives a 1974 Lincoln Mark IV on the show.

I was literally waiting for the theme song to start playing.

An interesting feature, that proved very useful to Frank Cannon specifically, since he was "portly", was, that the driver's seat could swivel he and his belly, out from underneath the steering wheel, to make getting in and out of the car much easier with or without a pistol in hand!

I agree. One of my biggest regrets is; I had a chance to buy a 1970 Lincoln Mark III, back in the early 1990's. It only had 35,000 miles and was in mint condition (Still had that "new car" smell) for only $1500. At the time, I had plenty of money but was on a "minimalist" kick, where, if I didn't absolutely need something, I wouldn't buy it, because I was afraid of being a hoarder. The Mark III was white with a white leather interior. It was marvelous. I think about that car every so often. It was awesome. Dennis talks about the instrument cluster being like jewelry. I remember that it's clock was made by Cartier, so maybe Cartier had a hand in designing the whole instrument cluster or layout? 1970 was the best year for the Mark series, IMO. The car was still hand built. It didn't go assembly line until the next year & had some other advantage, which I can't recall offhand, over the 1969 model. To add insult to injury, during the same period, I turned down my cousin's perfect, always garage kept, Datsun 240z, which he offered me for the same price, $1500, as my dad's friend had on the Mark III, for the same reason, I was on that minimalist kick! Most of the time, when people pass up great opportunities like these, it's because they are short of money, but I was rolling in cash in those days, and I wouldn't have even noticed spending $1500 or even $3000, because I was too busy working to spend the fruits of my labors. ...That's what I get, for trying to get my sh~t together (I do have a tendency to be a pack rat). ...C'est la vie...

THE MARK 3 WAS UNPROPOTIONED IN ASTHETIC DESIGN THE 72 MARK 4 IS AND ALWAYS WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE PINNACLE OF ALL 2 DR COUPE LINCOLNS IT'S STYLING ABSOLUTELY PUTS THE MARK 3 TO SHAME HOWEVER THE LATER MARK 4s WERE RUINED BY THE GOVERNMENTS REGULATIONS WHEN IN 73 MANDATED THAT THE MANUFACTURERS HAD TO PUT THE BIG CLUNKY 5 MILE AN HOUR BUMPERS ON ALL THE NEW MODELS THAT BIG BUMPER ASTHETICLY TOOK A LOT OF THE GREAT LOOKS OF THE MARK 4. THAT'S WHY THE 72 MARK 4 STANDS ALONE AS THEE FINEST LOOKING MOST APPEALING OVER ALL OTHER LINCOLN MARK SERIES.

I'm currently in the same situation. I'm 19 years old and contemplating buying a 1972 Mark IV, but as with you, all my nearest say that it will break down and just be a problem.

@@markuschristiansen7874 If it was kept in good condition and not left to set up somewhere for years, it may be ok. But yes, there could be potential problems with a car that old. But if you have the time and money to invest in getting it going, you may love it. Those cars had HUGE engines with a LOT of horsepower and they were pretty darn tough and would haul A$$, LOL! Just beware, with gas as high as it is, the gas mileage you'll get will be TERRIBLE. Just thought you would have wanted to know that.

@@deltajohnny hallo, or better, Olla!! It is nice to hear from another enthusiast... But it is neither difficult nor expensive to buy or maintaining an American car. There are so many communities and associations around Europe. The best cars you can find in Northern States (Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands...) They have the best selections of all!! Take a look at RD Classics./Germany. By the way, most of these are very simple built and most of Parts for restoration are still available, and they are not really expensive.. Or you make a nice trip to the southern areas of us, Florida, South Carolina

I've posted elsewhere that after the '79 gas crisis we could buy cars like that for around $500. My friends had a Mk III; Chrysler Newport; Sedan de Ville; Ford LTD; Olds 98 Regency; and I had a '77 Cordoba. People couldn't trade in their luxury cars fast enough to buy compact cars.

Adjusted for inflation for today, $50,190.17. A relative bargain, I'd say.

You know, I miss the old ways as much as the next guy, but I really do appreciate everything modern cars have. Handling is secure, they are safe, fuel economy that won’t break the bank, acceleration far improved, and reliability that could only be dreamt of 40 years ago. It’s fun to look back with rose tinted glasses, but you also gotta appreciate all the nice things we have today.

@@AfterDark33 I agree most of those things are nice, however, imo, peak safety to functionality ratio was reached in the 90's with the likes of Saab and Volvo. After that the cars have become so bloated with air bags and tech to the point where you actually need cameras to be able to see what's going on around the cars. The pillars are too thick to see by properly, the "beltlines" are so high up that you feel like your sitting in a WW1 tank, the interior is so cramped that you may feel claustrophobic, and the belt beeping warning never stops nowadays when you take the belt off in a low speed, even if you stop the cars and put in parking mode. You have to turn the car completely off if you trigger it. Also, the cars have to be so big that you can barely fit them in between cars on parking lots if you don't want to buy a compact car. Meanwhile I can ride my 1998 Saab 900 and don't hit my head in the cieling, hang my elbow up on the windowsill, don't have my ears beeped off and still feel pretty darn safe. So I hope we can some day ease up a little on some of the safety regulations, but we'll see if that ever happens.

You know, if we can make huge vehicles like the Suburban, with gas mileage that people can live with, there's no reason we couldn't make big comfortable cars like these Lincolns but with engines and multi-speed automatics a lot more efficient than the originals. I had a '75 Mark IV.

My dad had a'77 with a 351c it was great .

I just saw a landeau crown Vic at an impound lot. Owner of the place said it had some transmission issues, so someone just abandoned it. The car itself looked amazing though.

The leece Neville alternator was a problem on mine had to go to a different system with external regulator.🤔 Didn't charge enough 12.5 v versus 13.5 .

Cannon was truly the TV series that introduced me to the Mark III and Mark IV series and got me hooked for life. We never saw these cars. To my knowledge only a single 1973, 1974 and 1975/76 Mark IV were sold new in the country. We did see Thunderbirds from these years, but Ford Motor Company Denmark was rather ignorant. Danish car magazines did their best to ignore them. They would either - in the 1972 year book - list a Lincoln Continental Mark IV, but with a picture of a 1972 Lincoln Continental Sedan, then use the same picture for the listing of a Lincoln Continental sedan in both 1973 and 1974. Not ontill 1979 came out of the blue an article in the yearbook about the leading Industrial Designer in Germany Luigi Colani and his 1979 Continental Mark V Cartier Edition, calling it the best car he ever had, comparing it to Bentley and Rolls Royce cars he had owned. "This is the only car I have had, where I can go relaxed and ready to a meeting or negotiation, after having driven though half of Germany. Its temper and perfomance is very soothing and relaxing to me. It does not ask for anything - but it gives a whole lot." Danish national TV - DR - was the only channel available up untll 1988 and limited itself to McCloud, Kojak, Columbo, and later Miami Vice. In the part of the country where I grew up, we could watch German Television - ARD and ZDF - which we turned to if we wanted to watch more Kojak or the to us unfamiliar Streets of San Francisco, Rockford, Charlie's Angels, and .... Cannon. We had to endure though that all movies were dubbed into German. My generation lived with it. We understood it and pretty much all spoke it as third language in school, but my fathers generation frowned.

@@KoldingDenmark , If I could afford the fuel I'd get one or a T bird, my Dad had a 68 429 TBird and what a beauty it was, right now running a 1998 Ford Escort with 311 k miles on it and it gets over 45 mpg on some of my trips , so hard to go back to 12 mpg. these cars had probably the best materials of any car it their era, still saw them with mint interiors and vinyl tops long after the frames has rusted out.

Starting in 69' the Mark III's shared the same chassis derived from the 5th Generation (67'-71) T-Birds, also known as "Glamour Birds", starting in 1967. The 67-71 T-Birds was also available as FORDOR (suicide door) models. The engine lineup was 390, 428, 429 and 460 depending on the year and option. The 429 may have been the std. engine for the first year of the Mark III with the 460 as an option. The 66' T-Bird (4th Gen.) had a 428 option and a few handfuls of 65's were sold with 427's of all things.

@@radioguy1620 In 1972 the 460 was reduced to about 225 hp. in the new 6th Generation "land yacht", Thunderbird look-a-like Mark IV Continental. The 1971 429 c.i. was the last of the smaller 5th Generation T-Birds and made 365 hp. The 1972 460 Mark IV (that he loves), is lame beyond belief, compared to any 69'-71' 460 Mark III. The power ratings all three years of the Mark III's were exactly same; 365 hp. 500 lb./ft. torque. The 429 Birds were rated 360-365 hp., 480 lb./ft. torque, were lighter than the Continentals, and the 2-Door Bird was three inches shorter including wheelbase. The 69'-71' Continental chassis was identical to the the 67'-69' 4-door Thunderbird, not the 2-door.
