But the Communist Party had initiated the liberalisation of the economy two years earlier. This marked the beginning of the country's rise to become one of the world's leading economies.

An amateur filmmaker documents his impressions of a country on the move, travelling to Beijing and from there on to the countryside. He is particularly interested in the people, the workers, the farmers, but also in the advertising and the first free shops.
