The single most competitive season in NFL history. There were seven legitimate teams that could've won the Super Bowl with the right matchups (Raiders, Chargers, Bills, Browns, Eagles, Cowboys, Falcons).
@cjs83172
@cjs83172 2 жыл бұрын
In fact, you could make the argument that every team that made the playoffs that season, with the exception of the Vikings, could have won the Super Bowl, had things fallen their way, including the Oilers and Rams, who lost in the Wild Card round (the Rams lost to a Cowboys team in the WC round that they had crushed just a few weeks earlier). Of the ten teams that qualified for the post-season that year, all but the Vikings had records of either 12-4 or 11-5 (all five AFC playoff teams had 11-5 records), and even the Vikings had the Eagles on the ropes in the second quarter of their NFC Divisional Playoff match-up.

Hell the Patriots could have won the Super Bowl that year and they didn’t even make the playoffs. Led the AFC in scoring and point differential but had two stupid losses at the end of the season that cost them dearly.

@@cjs83172 Oilers had no chance of a Super Bowl or even beating the Raiders. They ran the simplest offense in the Super Bowl era and with #00 Ken Burrough out most of the season, their passing game was pedestrian in the extreme. I think it was Lester Hayes who said the Oilers offense ran the simplest offense he had ever seen.
@cjs83172
@cjs83172 9 ай бұрын
@@NosferatusCoffin Drawing the one team that knew their QB more than any other didn't exactly help their cause, either. The Raiders knew Ken Stabler like a book, having faced him in practice for nearly a decade prior to the QB swap that sent him to Houston and Dan Pastorini to Oakland, where he was pretty much a disaster, and the team knew it. Truth was, the Raiders were probably the best team, certainly in the AFC, as they'd won 9 of 11 just to get into the playoffs, easily defeated the Oilers and then allowed each of their next three opponents (Cleveland, San Diego, and Philadelphia in the Super Bowl) to beat themselves, and then pick up the pieces of what was left behind. But what happened in that playoff match-up with the Raiders was also a foreshadow of the coming collapse of the Oilers, as within two seasons, they'd be one of the worst teams in the NFL.
@CJinsoo
@CJinsoo 8 ай бұрын
@@NosferatusCoffinLester Hayes apparently never played against the Chicago Bears of that era, who were even more basic and lacked any deep threats. It is a simple game if you have RB like Campbell or Payton, but at least Oilers had 2 legitimate deep threats and a QB. Imagine the Bears with Payton, Bo Rather and Bob Avellini…

Absolute Classic football! Ahmad Rashad nabbing that last-second pass vs Cleveland, The Tyler Rose, bulldozing his way carrying three tacklers, and leaving a trail of them behind, periennally poor teams, like Buffalo Atlanta and Philadelphia becoming serious challengers and division winners, and a calvalcade of incredible athletes. Fans that went to games got more than their money's worth.

In Super Bowl XV when the Eagles TD from QB Ron Jaworski to WR Rodney Parker in the 1st quarter was called back due to the illegal motion penalty by WR Harold Carmichael, if that happened in today's NFL, the referee would have blown the whistle and no play would have been run and just move the ball back 5 yards and start the play all over again.

was he touched then the ground caused the fumble. I'm not sure. I thought the ground can cause a fumble if ball carrier was not touched before he went down to the ground.

1980 was a fun season that deserved a better ending. New blood like Buffalo, Cleveland, Atlanta, Philadelphia? Nope. Yet another boring Oakland rerun that nobody outside of Raider fans cheered. It was the 6th time in 7 years OAK or PIT won the SB.

How about OAK DE John Matuszak. That has gotta be the mark of a great lineman he taking up so much of a ball carrier or opposing player's airspace that he can astutely recall each person's distinct fragrance. Talk about not letting up, a motor that is always going, putting a body on him, I mean at least breathe on somebody, using all five senses as a point of contact he probably could tell you who is next to him with a blindfold on based off their smell maybe even find them if you give a shirt like a bloodhound and that is what you wanna see from a DE. The man is an absolute dog just sniff, whiff, and go get 'em. I hope a few edge rushers are watching his highlights.

in the video segment on season and playoff highlights, i do not recall exactly why the Browns went to the end zone when a FG would win it? Conditions looked bad and I recall a Browns game from the Sipe era where the kicker kept missing easy kicks, but i thought that was against the jets and went to OT? But wow, what a seemingly bad decision, or at least throw the ball out of the end zone, it wasn’t close. I guess I can see taking a shot to score but it has to be clear that it’s either a wide open throw or it goes out the back of the end zone. Raiders should have never made it to the Superbowl, just a bunch of lucky, cheating, mafia front men. The Ayotollah was a Raiders fan.
