The poetry of Jon Facenda was outstanding, we don't have films like that today. I understand he was reading from a script, but he earned the nickname "The Voice of God."

Mighty horns and synth tones. Peak Oakland Raider personalities. Harmonies of John Facenda and Bill King ("Holy Toledo!") Tensions between Rozelle and Al Davis. The raw emotions of Dick Vermeil. Of all the classic Super Bowl highlight films, this is my favorite. So many dramatic elements combine for one joyous viewing.

Mr. Facenda was a revered newscaster in Philadelphia. In the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Facenda was the dominant news broadcast on WCAU-TV in the Philadelphia area (beating the combined ratings of the two other network affiliates). Mr. Facenda was a very strong Catholic and the story goes that once while attending mass he noticed his parish priest did not have a watch so he immediately gave his watch to him

NFL Films never did find another voice like John Facenda. I wish they would have had open auditions where people could send in a tape of themselves narrating a game. They may have been able to find another one with the Voice of God. Mr. Facenda needs to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
@bufnyfan1 Жыл бұрын
@@dallasbrubaker6054 after Mr. Facenda passed away, a radio station program director in Buffalo, NY (WBEN-930 radio) sent in a demo tape of a local announcer who did the drive-home 4-hour shift, Jeff Kaye (without Mr. Kaye's knowledge). NFL films (both Ed and Steve Sabol) listened to the tape and liked it so much that they hired Mr. Kaye on the spot. Jeff Kaye can be heard on many NFL game of the week/yearly team reviews throughout the 80s.

What a playoff run and a dominant Super Bowl XV victory for the Oakland Raiders! Thirty 39 years ago today. Never get tired of watching these highlights...hope someday Cliff Branch gets in the HOF. He was one of the most feared and successful deep threat WRs of the 70's up till the mid 80's. Infact he was the all-time playoff leader in receiving yards at the time of his retirement to go along with 3 Super Bowl Rings. Also think Lester Hayes should get consideration. He had a total of 18 interceptions in the regular season and playoffs combined that year and was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year that season. He was a dominant CB for several years and a 2 time Super Bowl Champ. Come on HOF veterans committee...get these 2 greats in where they belong! Go Las Vegas Raiders!

The last 2 Super Bowls that the Raiders won in 1980 (Oakland) and 1983 (Los Angeles), they lost in the regular season to the eventual NFC Champion on the road in games that were decided by 1 score and then flip the script in the Super Bowl dominating Philadelphia and Washington. Also, John Facenda's narration of this and all of the Super Bowls that he narrated were spot on and done to perfection

I was only 10 years old during Super Bowl 15, but I clearly remember public sentiment regarding Lester’s abuse of the glue called Stick Um that was not yet disallowed at the time. He put that sh*t everywhere. On his hands, on his jersey, on his helmet, and his shins and hips. He was a great athlete, and an outstanding cornerback, but practically covering himself with that disgusting glue to the point of it being borderline satirical, he left an impression with some people who would put an asterisk next to his accomplishments. I know that he and Mike Haynes played a near perfect game in Super Bowl 18 without the benefit of that glue, but I feel that it diluted his legacy when he was abusing it.

A few Raiders should be in as well. Cliff Branch, Phil Villipiano, Ray Chester, Dave Dalby, Darryl Lamonica, and Marv Hubbard. These players won a lot if games and were standouts on a Raiders team that had to be dealt with year in and year out. Its funny how some teams have tremendous years and don't win it all, then win it all with another team thats not quite as good, but just has that "something". That's exactly what this Raiders team was. The 1983 Raiders was wirhout a doubt their finest. That team had it all. While I love Plunkett, lets say they had Dan Marino....WOW! Just look at the '83 Raiders roster, then imagine it with Dan Marino. With the Raiders philosophy (which is my philosophy) Marino would have shattered the record books, and the Raiders may have 5 or 6 Lombardi Trophies, maybe in a row. I was a super hardcore Redskins fan back then, and the regular season matchup with the Raiders still is in my top 5 all time regular season games in my lifetime. But when they matched up with the Raiders again in the Super Bowl, we got our doors blown completely off. To this day, its the only time I actually broke down and cried...cried uncontrollably. That team broke my heart. I knew my 'skins could lose and I was prepared for it, but I wasn't prepared for the complete and total ass whipping the Raiders put on us that day. When Jack Squirek intetcepted and scored making it 21-3, I knew it wasn't going to be. The whole 2nd half, I spent with my head in my hand just sobbing. So, I don't think the NFL or the media gives the 83 Raiders their just due as one of the Greatest teams in history, and it should.
@Stacie455 жыл бұрын
Plunkett's problem getting into the HOF is that QB's are over-represented now and there are more on the way. Peyton Manning, Brady, Brees, probably Rothlisberger, maybe Eli Manning, maybe Aaron Rodgers, the bar for quarterbacks to get into the HOF is very high.

Flores didn't give his players the whole week off, that would be insane even for the Raiders. And as far as Raiders are concerned, this is definitely a rightfully Oakland's home. But unfortunately ( in which is not a damn thing we can do about it, that is); it's Las Vegas' new palace house. And I am still very upset. But on the flip side of the coin, I'm just gonna have to get with the world and times. .😞😭😭😎 and deal with the reality. Mighty horns and synth tones. Peak Oakland Raider personalities. Harmonies of John Facenda and Bill King ("Holy Toledo!") Tensions between Pete Rozelle and Al Davis. Of all the classic Super Bowl highlight films, this is my favorite. I'm a biased Northern California fan, but I think anyone can appreciate it. So many dramatic elements combine for one joyous viewing (and listening). The breakout star of this drama: Dick Vermeil. The Eagles head coach wears his emotions on his sleeves. Watch how he just puts himself out there, in the most endearing way. "WHERE'D THE NOSE GUARD COME FROM?!" "GO HAROLD! COME ON, BAY-BEE!" What a view, to see the game from his side. In the name of entertainment, it makes total sense that NFL Films would follow him with a microphone throughout. At this time. only one other Super Bowl highlight film had relied so much on in-game audio. Hank Stram matriculated into our hearts forever. That was 11 years earlier. Nearly all the championship coaches of the era were cut from the dry, stoic mold. Football was no place for the emotionally vulnerable. Can you imagine Tom Landry, Don Shula, Bud Grant, or Chuck Noll agonizing out loud? Vermeil nurtured his way to success in two completely different eras. He's the only coach to lose a Super Bowl with one team (against the original Oakland Raiders) and win a Lombardi Trophy for another (19 years later, for the St. Louis Rams). He bonded with his teams through a unique playbook: of vulnerable emotional displays and positive reinforcements. That he earned a Pro Football Hall of Fame induction this decade, when athletes are expected to prioritize their mental health, is a storybook ending. Legends come in a variety of philosophies, sights, and sounds. In this film, they all come together.

This game was billed as a modern-day Sparta vs Greece battle as the Eagles were worked throughout the year by their coach Dick Vermeil to the point of exhaustion while the Raiders coaching staff kept things much "looser" and saved their best work for games that mattered. The two teams had actually played each other in the regular season (Eagles won 10-7 in Philadelphia) so the Raiders coaching staff had an idea of how they would approach this game. This game also began the decline of Dick Vermeil as Eagles head coach as the Eagles never came close to the Super Bowl game under him and he literally left the Eagles a few years later due to exhaustion/burnout

This game was an important lesson in mental preperation. It's well known Vermil had his Eagles wound way too tight for the game and it showed. Oakland, on the other hand, got to enjoy the sights and pleasures of New Orleans for a few days and went into the game loose and ready to roll. Nervousness is understandable before a a big day but you cannot let it consume you.

@@dentonyoung4314 Forest Gregg was an infamous disciplinarian, if memory serves, as was Vermil, especially in Philly. Thankfully, the latter got a chance at redemption 19 years later, learned from his mistakes, and finally won that Lombardi.
@bufnyfan1 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Vermil himself "burned out" a few years later and retired. He was known to come to the Eagles offices at ~4 AM and not return home until very late in the evenings. He ultimately came back to coaching with the then-St. Louis Rams and won a SB with Kurt Warner as QB (in a season where his starting QB Trent Green was lost for the season after a knee injury in the pre-season)

Say what you want about Al Davis, he had a lot of brains and class in accepting that trophy from Rozelle. Don’t forget they were in constant litigation for a long long time, no love lost there. Spent the raiders had to win four post season games in a row including what was the real super bowl game that year the divisional playoff game at Cleveland, that game was a war in sub zero temps the RAIDERS were lucky to pull that game out with a last second interception in the end zone by Mike Davis 14-12. I will agree dick vermile ran the eagles pretty hard and maybe the eagles were spent but it was a miracle you for JIM PLUNKETT AND THE OAKLAND RAIDERS. I was always a huge fan of dick vermile and always Hoped he would coach the RAIDERS.

When or lose, Ron Jaworski’s arm strength was incredible. He was running towards the sideline when he threw the bomb that ended up being a td that was called back. The ball traveled at least 50 yards. He made a similar throw in the second half that also traveled at least 50 yards. Imagine how far he could throw the ball from a classic throwing position! I’m guessing 85-90 yards.

@Matt Pizzano Exactly, and that was mostly Dick Vermeil's doing, mainly because he never let his team enjoy the experience of being in the Super Bowl, something he learned from 19 years later when the he led the Rams to Super Bowl XXXIV. In fact, as the story goes, when word got to the Raider players of how Vermeil wasn't letting his players enjoy the experience of getting to the Super Bowl, the Raider players felt that the onus was on them to win the game for all the players leaguewide. And when they saw the Eagles in the pre-game warm-ups, they knew they had the game won then, well before the game even began, because of how tight the Eagles were. And sure enough, once the game started, the Eagles made every mistake imaginable and the game was over early in the third quarter.

Notably, the Eagles and Raiders represented the original and current, respectively, home cities of the Athletics baseball team. The city that hosted the Athletics in between Philadelphia and Oakland, Kansas City, is home to the Chiefs, a division rival of the Raiders; prior to the Athletics' move to Oakland, Chiefs-Raiders games were not really a big deal, but became such in 1968. It was in Kansas City that the Athletics adopted their current green-and-gold color scheme; the shade of green used originally, Kelly Green, was the same used by the Eagles at that time. Both later adopted a darker shade of green.

What an inspirational four-game playoff odyssey for the Raiders, three AFC wins on the road. First they ended the Oilers and Browns would-be mini-dynasties in their infancies, then upset a heavily-favoured Chargers team with a record-breaking offense on their home field. Then they saved their best performance for the SB, emphatically beating a tough as nails Eagles team. Philly only made the playoffs one more season under Vermeil, so perhaps the psychological blow of this game resonated long after.

Crazy to remember that in early October, the AFC spotlight was squarely on the Bills, who come out of the gate 5-0, finally beating the Dolphins for the first time in 20 tries, and thrashing the Raiders 24-7, shutting out Pastorini and the Silver and Black offense (Lester Hayes had a pick-six). Down the stretch, however, Buffalo only finished 6-5, losing to SD on a late Fouts TD pass.
