Timtravelfootage from a fantastic trip to Syria in 1980. The route takes the "Autoput", the highway through the former Yugoslavia to Greecee, through Istanbul and Turkey. First stop in Syria is Aleppo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it may have been inhabited since the sixth millennium BC. The footage shows the mighty citadel in the middle of the old city. It is considered one of the oldest and largest fortresses in the world.

Aleppo was massively destroyed between 2012 and 2016 during the Syrian war, when the city was at the center of heavy fighting between Syrian government forces and the opposition. 2 million people left the city, and over 25,000 were killed. All areas of the city and its main monuments, souks, khans and mosques were severely damaged.
The trip continues to the famous Simeon Monastery. The Church of Saint Simeon Stylites is one of the oldest surviving church complexes, founded in the 5th century. It was constructed on the site of the pillar of Saint Simeon Stylites, a renowned stylite monk. In May 2016, this UNESO World Heritage Site was damaged in a missile attack by the Russian Air Force.
Another stop on this trip is Hama with its world famous water wheels, the Norias. With a diameter of up to 27 meters, they are the largest of their kind in the world.
