'81 was so close to being an all-time great year for the Lions. In the year of "The Catch" that vaulted Joe Montana and the Niners to their 1st SB Championship, the Lions beat both the 49ers and the Cowboys. They were 8 yards away from knocking off San Diego, who lost the AFC Championship Game in Cincinnati. A home win vs Tampa Bay in the final week, would've given them the NFC Central Division. Also, they had the 4th-highest scoring offense in the NFL (behind San Diego, Atlanta & Cincinnati) despite relying on their 3rd-string QB for most of the season. And until 2013, the Lions had never won a single road game vs the Redskins. All-time, they were 0-21 prior to 2013. This was their best shot, as they lost on a late FG, 33-31. They could easily have been 12-4, and possibly 13-3, which would've given them home-field advantage over San Francisco in the playoffs.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda, I've heard it all of my life with these Lions. They truly are cursed! They blew it big time in '81 and '80. The most heartbreaking of them all was in '83, when they finally won their division and then lost on a wide-right Eddie Murray field goal attempt in the final seconds on New Years Eve. You can find that game here on youtube, and memories of it still haunt me to this day! I cried that night. So did the Lions' players in the locker room following that game. I've waited all of my life for this team to do something. I'm hoping they will be in a Super Bowl before I die, but I doubt it! They suck that bad!

That Tampa game was my first Lions game. My dad took me. Awesome time with Dad, but still I ended up crying that day. This began years … decades … of emotional abuse at the hands of my Detroit Lions. They look good this year but poised for a collapse. Dad didn’t live long enough to see them when it all. Perhaps I will … but I’m getting long in the tooth.

So many "almosts" in that season. Strong front 7 but a not so great secondary. It's been so long since the Lions have had a complete defense. You have to go back to the Joe Schmidt coached teams with Lem Barney, Mike Lucci, Dick Lebeau and Alex Karras. That was a great defense. Close games, heartbreaking defeats. Seems to be a Lions tradition no matter what year. That dropped Freddie Scott TD pass that became an interception in the Tampa Bay game was a killer. One day!! After so many heartbreaking close losses a Super Bowl seems as far away as ever in 2020. Love the Lions!!

Monte Clark was a pretty underrated coach in my opinion cuz he worked with Don Shula in the early 70s and was a part of the undefeated ‘72 Miami Dolphins as their offensive coordinator. If the Lions ownership wasn’t so bad back then, the team would’ve done great under Monte’s watch

@@paulettelee6977 Those Joe Schmidt teams, late 60s/early 70s, were strong teams. Did not have a capable QB to take them to the next level, Danielson and Hipple were capable but not superstars. Komlo's last season with the team were unproductive. The Lions had a prime chance to upgrade 2 years later to draft Marino and decided on fullback James Jones for a blocking back for Sims. Defense still had a formidable line led by Bubba Baker, Doug English (made the Pro Bowl in 1981), Dave Pureifory, and William Gay.
